Hey Tumblr,
The project is finished now. The pitch went alright, I didn't speak much partly due to my having social anxiety and hating speaking in front of a room of people but also because James did most the work so he spoke about what he did and Zu is better at speaking in public.
I liked the group project. The point, I think, was to get us working with people we don't really know but I already knew both people in my group so I missed out on that part but I still felt I learned from the experience. I learned how to work in a group and if I were to do it again I'd try and communicate better because I feel there were some misunderstandings along the way but it all worked out in the end.
For the first brief (Mini-me) I much preferred that brief as I loved getting to go out to parts of Limerick I hadn't been to before (I'm not from here) and just sitting down and sketching the place while talking to people in the class I hadn't spoken to before. I liked getting to go outside and sketch things in real time and it's something I still do now. Researching children's book illustrators was fun and trying to replicate the style has influenced my style.
The sculpture part was fun too, it's something I didn't expect going into an animation course but I liked the challenge. My mini-me may not have come out the prettiest but I think it represents me well. It made me realise just how inter-disciplinary animation can be.
All-in-all I liked the briefs I was given and can't wait to see what second year has in store :)

Today I worked on the PowerPoint my group will be using to help our pitch on Monday.
We will be pitching our animation project to Paul and Yvonne. It will be a 10min short film, we'll present all our research and artwork and the final animatic which James worked on.
I have a screenshot of my progress so far on the PowerPoint, mainly putting in the work I did and sending it to Zu and James so they can add what they did.

I won't lie I almost forgot to do the soldier's uniforms so I was under a bit of a time constriction as I had to go somewhere today.
I based it off soldier's uniforms worn in England at the time with variants in colour to show the different factions.
They also adorn the animal pins to help show the faction as well. If I get a chance later or tomorrow I'll do the line art and flat colouring for them as well.

I did the final line art and colouring for Dish and Spoon's clothes as well.
I used Wirt from Over the Garden Wall for reference for Dish's clothes
I also used Greg's design as reference for Spoon
The colour's are muted for Dish as he's an adult just trying to survive and protect his family during a war. Spoon has a splash of colour in his blue shirt to show his child like optimism. In a miserable, soulless scene he'll be the most colourful part to show he doesn't fully understand what's happening.

Today I did some line art and colouring for my concept sketches of the costumes.
This portrays the style of Over the Garden Wall better than the sketches with the line art and flat colouring. I used black for the jackets as this was the colour used for formal suits in the 1800's. The shirts are the primary colours to make it easy to visually distinguish between the characters. I muted the colours a bit to match the colour palette of the show.

I also did the sketches for Dish and Spoon's clothes.

They have simple clothes, a button down shirt with a flat collar, suspenders/ overalls and loose trousers. They're common people they wear what they can. They're clothes are based on images I found while researching which are in my collage piece.
Again based on the Over the Garden Wall style. They'll have muted colour palettes, mainly beige and possible yellow or blue for a bit of colour.

I did some sketches for the costumes for the politicians in our animatic.

They're wearing suits with tailcoats and top hats to visually show their status. They all wear different colour under shirts to show they're from different factions with blue being the dog, yellow being the cat and red being the cow. To help show which animal they're representing they wear a pin of the animal.
I did them in the style of Over The Garden Wall which has a very simple design, no wrinkles or fold in the clothes, flat colours and thin lineart. This will show better when I get to doing the lineart and final colouring.

Paul told us we needed an animation style and aesthetic for our project. I suggested the show Over The Garde Wall. It's a mini series from Cartoon Network in 2014.
I suggested it because of the colour palette being more muted colours, thought it would suit an animation about war well. I also like the style of the characters. It's rather simple but It looks clean and would be easy to adapt to our own styles as well. The backgrounds are also gorgeous, they're hand painted with a vignette filter around the edges to give an old-timey effect.
I made a mood board with screenshots from the show, character concept sheets ad the colour palette.

We've delegated tasks to each team member. Zu is the team leader for the time being. He's doing the backgrounds, researching architecture and layouts. James is doing character design and I'm researching clothing and costumes of the time.
In England the Victorian Era started in the 1800's so I took a lot of inspiration for clothing from then.
I made up a mood board with all my images I compiled.
Poor people wanted it to seem to others they weren't poor, they tried to dress their best despite not being able to afford much.
Men, especially men in power, often wore suits. With jackets going to their waist (sometimes with a coat tail at the back), wide legged trousers, short collars and typically a bow tie. Top hats were usually worn with a suit.
Common people during the day would wear lounge-suits with a turn down collar shirt under the jacket and a tie. To keep their more relaxed trouser from falling they wore suspenders.
The site I got most this from:

Today my group all made quick storyboards to get ideas out for visuals. I did mine in my sketchbook.

Later when we're all done we'll compare them and decide on the final storyboard which will be used towards our animatic.

Today Zu and I were tasked with coming up with a story for our animation and writing a final script.
I amn't very good at coming up with stuff on the spot so we went with Zu's story idea.
There are three Faction leaders (the cat, dog and cow) who are at war with each other over power and gold. The story follows the main protagonist Dish as he and his son (Spoon) are fleeing their home town as it's become a war zone. Spoon gets killed in the crossfires. Dish, after grieving the loss of his son, devises a plan to take down the politicians. He goes to each leader posing as a messenger boy telling them another faction wants to ally. The factions all lower their defenses thinking an ally is coming to help but they all get destroyed.
Zu and I both wrote scripts for the story and ended up going with my script while adding some elements from his as well. Here's the final script.
There was an alternate ending where Dish commits suicide but it felt a bit out of place and dark for the vibe we wanted to give off.

"Hey Diddle Diddle"
Hey diddle diddle,
the cat and the fiddle,
the cow jumped over the moon.
The little dog laughed
to see such fun,
and the dish ran away with the spoon.

New Brief
Hey Tumblr,
We're starting the last brief of first year
We've been split into groups of four people but my group only has three people in it.
Myself, Zuhair and James have been tasked with preparing and pitching a 3minute animation with the nursery rhyme Hey Diddle Diddle, with the genre of War set in the 1800's.
We have a group chat set up to keep in communication. I wasn't able to go in today due to a hospital appointment so I'll be catching up on what they've done on Monday.

Animation Trip :D
Hi there Tumblr,
Today the Animation and Motion Design class went on a day trip to FOTA Wildlife in Cork to do sketches and studies of animals.
I did all of these in black and grey ink pens, it made the sketches feel more permanent. I found it so fun to try drawing the animals cause they kept moving so their poses were constantly changing. When that happened I just drew over the original sketch. I took some pictures of the animals too but my phone isn't working so I used a polaroid camera.

Animation: Day 7
Hi Tumblr,
I did some photography of my mini-me sculpture and the mouths I drew to animate with.
They were taken on a green screen so they can be made into PNGs to make it easier to edit the animation with.

Animation: Day 6
Hay Tumblr,
There wasn't studio time today so I did some more work on my mini-me sculpture.
I painted it, gave it eyes, a shirt, and I didn't get a picture of it but I gave it hair too.
kinda messed up the paint job so it has a chocker too.
