Statement and Evaluation.
Initially I started with one minute sculpture influenced by Ervin Wurm. We progressed to learn how the body can be used as a sculpture. Wurm encouraged personal participation in sculptural art. This was very freeing and liberating just going with our instincts.
We were then encouraged to show aspects of ourself in a form of a sculpture and become aware of our bodies.I progressed to making an inflatable sculpture with aspects of myself “ wild mama “ The inflatable was about 8 meters long. I learned how flimsy the plastic was to fuse together. I felt my sculpture was playful and people engaged with the sculpture on a fun level. A call to liberation. Mark Twain.
From this I moved to kitchen tiles and builders scrim and a coffee pot. I explored the texture of the scrim on the tile and was curious to explore it more, at this time I proceed to make a mobile .
I explored different types of builders scrim and made a floor sculpture . This was influenced by Bridget Riley optical illusion and constructivism. I felt the material lent to both.
I constructed a wall sculpture from strips of an old blinds.
I was pleased to go back to my original scrim on tiles and bring it into procreate and combine it with optical illusion influenced by Bridget Riley. I could definitely see the influence of constructivist in the piece also.
I made a basket base from strip of blinds , I ran out of material and began using cardboard and acetate with some strips of metal tying them together with cable ties.
This proved unsuccessful as the structure became to flimsy to work with,
In keeping with
Take an object / do something to it/ do something to it.( repeat)
I decided to put one of my peers into it to see how it looked and felt.
My tower of clay
As my work progressed I was drawn More to constructivism sculpture of Naum Gabo which has something in common with Bridget Riley. Both work with illusions, where the initial viewing of the Art seems to be something else, you have to revisit the art to process it properly.
I threw a lot of pots on the wheel exploring form. I was unsure what to do with the array of pots with the influences of Tony Cragg I stacked them into a crooked tower.
I then explored the towers of pots in a Gaudi and constructivist influence.
I learned that you can revisit pieces previously worked on and the exploration is infinite.
Research is inspiring and encourages creativity, but it s also necessary as it’s important to know the progression of art.
I learned form observing my peers and I learned a lot form my lectures.

Take an object , do something to it, do something to it repeat
Bathroom tile and added some builder scrim .
I bought the image into procreate and manipulated the image and distorted the size of the scrim.
I used this as a background image, with the influence of Bridget Riley. I used lines and shapes to form my O.P.
I feel after reaching Russian Constructivism Art , that I was definitely influenced.

Video installation ,
Throwing paint at clay pots.
I did this to show the form and the variations of the pots displayed in a tower, inspired by Tony Craig . British Sculpture.

Making pots ,making more and making more. I was left with array of pots and unsure how to display them as a sculpture.
Tony Craig was suggested to me and I was inspired by his organic sculptures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looking at the way Tony Cragg sculpture seemed to fold into one another in a tower gave me the idea to tower my sculpture as some of the pots had folded into one another.
I did made an installation of me throwing paint at the tower sculpture to show the definition of the form textures.

Initially I had intended this sculpture to sit with the square base on the bottom, exploring ways to photograph it.
Analysing how it would look better. We decided it reads better this way.
I wanted to use shadow to extend the play and motion of the acetate.
Tumblr media
Above you can clearly see the original sculpture and the shadow.
Tumblr media
Next you can see how the sculpture and the shadow fuses into one.
The image of the sculpture becomes secondary as the projected shadow surpasses the sculpture .

Here Cornelia Parker creates a secondary sculpture with the shadows and then they become one.

Research constructivism .
The constructivist believed art should directly reflect the modern industrial world.
Vladimir Tatlin was influenced by Pablo Picasso's cubist constructions.
By 1921 Russian Artist who followed Tatlins ideas were calling themselves Constructivist.

I began to make this sculpture with acetate. My first focus was just to make and as I progressed I realised I needed to make a base. Working with mono material of acetate strips and staples. I constructed the base with some difficulty. After making the base I looked at the object in relation to the space around it and looked at the space in between the circles/swirls.
Tumblr media
I realised that if I added more I I would loos the space and the simplicity.of the sculpture
Researching
Ann Weber making a sculpture.
I decided to use her technique of using tabs at the sides to make the sculpture more stable

My intrest in constructivism and kinetic art was initially visual as I developed my ideas more and began to understand the political pull of the Russian Empire.
"Art should directly reflect the modern industrial world."

Coming back to Constructivism art movement. I explored Naum Gabo. ( 1890-1977) Russia.
Gabo left Russia in 1922 and lived in Berlin for 10 years, where he worked with other artist of the Bauhaus.Gabo was a pioneering constructivist sculpture who used materials such as glass, plastic and metal.
I was thrilled to have found out that he designed Revolving Torsion ,Fountain 1972-3 outside St. Thomas Hospital in London.
I have seen this fountain several times and always enjoyed the use of water as sculptural medium.

My tribute to Tallins Tower.
Initially I was making a sculpture but on researching CONSTRUCTIVISM I felt I was pulled towards spiral shapes of the lop-sided angular of diagonal grider.
Tatlins approach was seen as completed non-representional . He was more interested in form and textures.
I concentrated on from , repeating and relating textures and materials in my own tower. I re-looked my first attempt as I felt the constraints of the material were a hindrance to me causing me to stop. After some consideration I found a way to move forward.

Looking a. Some of Robin Rhode’s work I decided to do photography performance with one of my peers as a participant in title.
Am I trapped?

In this cage ‘AM I TRAPPED’
Some photos.
The participant looks uncomfortable and in some she looks happy, the question is is she trapped or is she happy to be cocooned in strips of plastic strips.

“ some people would call what I do performance art “ but I don’t like the term. I’m a sculptor who makes live work, and I was trying to develop the nature of what sculpture could be. I rather be thought as a dancer that a performance artist-and I’m a very good dancer.
‘ people think I’m lampooning Henry Moor- but I did that in another work called Fallen Warrior”
(The Guardian- interview by Karin Andreasson)
Bruce McLean age 76.
A leading figure in the development of the 1960s conceptual art, he started making sculptures from rubbish and debris. His breakthrough “POSE FOR PLINTHS’ attracted me to his work with the his awareness of how the plinths affected him. He said he tried to put his foot of his arm where the plinths determined, then it became a pose or an action that I did through out the day.
I used a model with my one sculpture and tried to let the sculpture determine where the body might go, this happened to some extent. I suppose it’s about relaxing and trusting instincts and figuring out things. It make me think about how I might behave in different spaces the confinements of the material and how my body reacts to that.

‘The reason for painting is an energetic thing……
The gap is what I’m chasing, try to hold life …energetic expression of life’ Nick Miller.
Tumblr media
I learned a lot today from the talk with Nick Miller. He’s a clear and concise speaker and generous with his information. On reflection the most important things that I learned for Nick is to respond to a subject, future and history .
‘Find the way to wake yourself up’ I relate from this quote that if I am present and awake in the moment my creativity will follow.

I find the way the wall becomes part of the sculpture surprisingly different. The is holes in the wall are about 1 ft square and some of the sculpture goes through it, at first I thought there just happened to be a hole in the wall at that place but then I realised it was part of the sculpture.

Sarah Sze. "Seamless"
Sze incorporates objects such as tools, ladders and spirit levels adding other components like miniature wooden bridges .The sculpture sweeps across the space in delicate curves connecting the objects into a larger construct.
