Graphic design poster
Tumblr media
I made a poster in photoshop for my graphic design elective. I wanted to incorporate part of my other elective work into my poster, so I went with a frame from my animation with a poster about change and how people change physically and mentally through time. My original idea was to fully recreate the frame using tools in photoshop, however I wanted to show my abilities in exporting and editing images, as well as incorporating text with multiple fonts.

I finished the stop watch. I glued the pieces together, drew on the hands and numbers. I originally intended on making the clock hands adjustable but I didn’t know how to make the pieces, and due to the project ending, I didn’t have time to learn. I also added a chain to really make it a pocket watch.

My clay was dry so I began sanding. The clock face didn’t fit in the stop watch as well as I had originally intended, so I tried to sand both shapes. During this process the clock face began to crack so I’ll just have to make do with what I am have so far.

Once I finished sanding it was time to paint. I used a paint similar enough to gold and layered it on twice to avoid any patchiness.

Artist Research - Chip Kidd
Chip Kidd is an American graphic designer born in 1964 in Pennsylvania. He is most well known for his book covers. He has designed over 2000 books, most notably Jurassic park.
Tumblr media
Chip Kidd’s covers seem to maintain a minimalistic style, the main focus being typography. The first thing that catches your eye is the lettering or word placement, for example, some of the book covers have words written in a way you wouldn’t really expect like shown in the crimson labyrinth

Graphic design
Today I practiced some typography and tried to redraw different fonts that I had looked at. I chose to write words that I think tied in with movement and time and how things change or grow.
Tumblr media
I then drafted a rough idea of how a potential poster would look. I wanted to show my understanding of photoshop and its tools, so I hope to make a background with the different shapes, and take an image from my animation to put over it. I then want to subtly overlay some typography with the words that relate to movement and change.

In graphic design we were given 6 word prompts and that we had to show only using sqaures. I found it a little bit difficult to show some of these words as I didn’t fully understand them or fully understand how to show them using cubes.

Ceramics
I began crafting a more intricate pocket watch as I really didn’t like how my previous clock turned out. It was fun to make but I felt I could do better and really wanted to challenge myself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I designed how I wanted it to look and sketched out how it would function. I want the clock hands to be adjustable to really show the actual movement in time. I then cut out 2 circles to draft how big I wanted it to be, as I didn’t plan like this last time and it didn’t go too well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I then began sculpting the shape of the stop watch and left a hole for the chain to pass through, and then I made the clock face that will go inside the stop watch.

Ceramics - clock
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today I began painting my clock. I wish I had sanded it down before I began painting but I forgot to. I painted all the areas I wanted white and then I began painting on the brown section. I used watered down paint in a darker brown to try and recreate a wooden texture as well as adding lines. I painted on the swinging thing inside the arch, although I think it was better without it.

I began making my clock today. I carved out 2 squares and added other shapes to construct how I wanted it to look, however I feel like it is a lot smaller than I originally intended it to be.

Ceramics - Design
Tumblr media
I drafted an idea that I hope to recreate in ceramics. Using images I found inspiring I incorporated elements of modern clocks and renaissance statues into my design. Instead of having a regular clock, I want the time to be told in years to show the passage of time

I collected some images that I found very aspiring in how I wanted to approach my ceramics project. To show movement in time I wanted to make some kind of figure that would represent different eras of time. I decided to look at renaissance statues and buildings while incorporating a more modern aesthetic. I want to create some kind of clock to show the passage of time

I made various marks on cardboard to symbolise movement in time and references to my previous animation. In the first and second page I wanted to signify youth, so I used string to resemble a swing. For the second page I used a small ball and bounced and rolled it around the page as though a child were playing with it. For the third page I wanted to show transition, like the spin in my animation. To do this I used a piece of card and spin it to make a circle shape or look like the spinning action, and then I used a small piece of rolled up cardboard to show the movement. For my final piece I wanted to show more order and shape in contrast to the previous chaos, to symbolise maturity.

Animation Research
I wanted to include a sort of hug and spin scene in my animation that ended in a transformation. As this would be difficult to achieve I decided to examine animations hat were similar in what I would like to do.

I chose Steven universe as it was the best example I could find for how I wanted it to look
