In his youth, Kai's father Simon was a mariner, and often went far out to sea on the boat he shared with his friend Willy.

Simon would often go out alone, and one day came back carrying a baby with pointed ears and silver-scaled patches of skin. Only Willy knew the truth: Kai was half-merperson, rejected by his mother's people because he couldn't survive underwater for long. Desperate to keep him safe and well, Kai's mother requested Simon raise him as a human boy on the land.

Kai was an outcast for most of his life, rejected by many because of his strange ears. Whilst most of the scales he had as a newborn have now vanished, ocean water will sometimes cause them to show again.

Six years ago, Kai's father mysteriously vanished. His boat washed up on shore, empty. Kai wonders if he found a way to join the merpeople, but worries something much darker happened.
