Minori nodded, chewing her cheesecake. There were a few perks with being a waitress and one was that there was a discount with buying from the stores she worked at. Initially, she had picked the trainer class simply because of how cute she imagined the outfits and stores would be. Now, she was glad that she had not only the benefits but the pay that came from her occupation.
Head tilted back slightly to view the old clock that hung on the wall. She could have easily checked the time via her screen but there were a few habits from living in the real world that she had yet to shake off. The clockâs ticks were drowned out by the pouring rain but the time indicated quite a bit. Minori assumed the NPC owner of the store had been caught up in the rainstorm, of course there were a few NPCs that seemed to not show up on certain days which she assumed was just their scheduling.
âThere are downsides to the food here but itâs great how easy and quick it is to make! You canât really customize it that much but, hell, I wasnât the best cook out there so that doesnât matter.âÂ

A Break in the Rain | Minori & Benjamin
Benjamin shook his head. As vague as it seemed, he could agree with what Minori was saying. âI mean, Iâm fine with making the best of whatâs going on right now. Itâs not that bad, aside from being stuck and all.â He shrugged, unsure if she was one of the players who were working towards breaking out of the game.
Watching as the cake was slid over, he paused for only a second before cutting a corner off the slice and all to happily taking a bite. It had been awhile since heâd had something sweet, and he had, what he thought, was an overly childish sweet tooth.Â
âI forgot how real everything tastes in game.â Sighing, he took another forkful of his slice. âIâd hate for a cake to go to waste just because no oneâs around, you know?âÂ

Minori thought of VRO as more than just a temporary reality. To her, it wasnât as closeto home as it could get; it was home. The possibilities had started opening up to her from the moment she started playing, the finite yet seemingly endless choices of the game and the convenient system allowed her movement with ease and a false sense of purpose. She knew it was limited. She knew it was false. But the sense of being in the moment was all that she needed to convince her that that was what mattered.
âI could see that.â Minoriâs finger trailed along the rim of her cup before she noticed that the steam had receded greatly. Taking a swig of the liquid, she pulled down her menu and withdrew two cheesecakes. âBut I guess to me, itâs more of...I want to include this in my life too. Not just out there or in here. Weâre moving around and all, so this is still me, right? Ha...Iâm probably crazy.â
Pushing the cake over his way, she handed him a fork before digging into her own. With a friendly wink, she took a bite. âItâs on the house. Not like thereâs anyone else.â
A Break in the Rain | Minori & Benjamin
With the door shut, the sound of the rain was muffled. But nonetheless, it was obvious that the storm was far from passing over. Pulling up his menu, Benjamin swiped through his inventory and selected a comfortable gray sweater. He pulled in on before deselecting his sodden shirt. Much better.Â
Toying with the rim of the cup, he nodded. âI suppose this is reality for now, might as well make it as close to home as possible.â He didnât see much to return to in the real world, and he didnât mind being stuck as much as other players were. âAnd being called my real name helps remind me who I am. I guess.â He trailed off, not sure if what he was saying made any particular sense.Â
âAnyways. Iâm guessing you working here has something to do with your trainer class?âÂ
#detective-gm#a break in the rain#slowly rolls this out#we should totes do the lock out thing though and make the 'a break in the rain' just a 'break in'

Nightlight | electricaldisturbances
Her blinds were always closed--the ones in her apartment. The light was always a bit too bright but she found that if she closed her blinds, the light would come in grey. Her apartment was washed in monochrome and she woke not to the irritation of the sun on her eyelids but the persistent ringing of her alarm clock. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Her day would start but she would dress in the half-asleep world she had created herself. And when she would return it would be the same, a darker but quieter grey.
Sometimes the world would attempt to get in. Her cellphone would flash its bright screen against her face and messages would display cheery questions asking for company. She would decline politely and the blinds would be drawn again.Â
Before the game, Minori lived her life uninspired. She followed the current without a thought, letting her environment choose for her. Days would blur into a seamless pattern: sleep, eat, work, play, sleep, eat, work, play. The mechanic routine was a comfort. Sleep. Eat. Work. Play.Sleep. Eat. Work. Play. She was happy. She had been happy. There were no other obligations other than work so you could eat, work so you could play, work so you could live, and that had been enough. She had no one to tell her otherwise. The examples she followed when convenient did not tell her otherwise. The routine had become like a heartbeat and the steady beating made for false correctness. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.
She did not realize her discontent.
The awakening hadnât been remarkable; it had simply been a niggling thought that had risen to the surface of her mind. Observations of co-workers laughing with one another, passing people holding hands, couples fitting comfortably together in conversation and in movement stacked up until she realized that she was lonely. It was not just loneliness. It was a want for change. And when that want, the need, manifested itself it was all she could do but get washed away by it.
So she began to reach out. The blinds were opened, if only for a little bit. Invitations were accepted and conversations were started with painstaking smiles and hasty laughter.Â
When her attempt failed, she returned to her routine. The dissatisfaction was still present but distractions began to arise. One such distraction was Victory Road Online.
âAh, shit.â Minori looked up at the hole she had fallen through then brought her attention to the surrounding environment. Other than the small amount of light that filtered in through the hole, the place was dark. Glancing up at the hole again, she debated using her Fearow to fly up but the hole was small and the place was decrepit. The wallpaper next to her peeled away from the wall with the wall itself chipping into pieces. At her feet lay dust and rubbish, her footsteps all that disturbed the layers of grey. Her hand reached up in a futile effort, blocking the sun that fell on her eyes.Â
Hesitant step forward stirred a cloud of dust from the floor. Minori covered the bottom half of her face with her sleeve and closed her eyes. Coughing, she groped around for her Pokeballs and released one of her Pokemon. A flash of red shone creepily against the walls, revealing her to be in a narrow hallway. Faded posters clung to bulletin boards, the words aged away into illegibility. Minori blinked and the place was mostly dark again but now a Chandelure hovered close to the trainer, soft blue flames producing a more calming circle of dim light.
âSorry, Noire, Iâm a bit lost. Dâya think you could help me find the exit?â Her voice cracked and she coughed once more. âJust light the way.â She whispered, her tone hushed as if prompted by the surrounding silence. Minori glanced up once more at the sky above her and stepped towards her Pokemon and into the darkness. Crossing her arms, she began her slow walk through the crumbling structure.Â
Footsteps echoed eerily against the walls. The sound unnerved her but mostly because, if she listened carefully, she could detect something else. If she listened, and all she could do was listen, Minori could hear the echo of a childâs laugh and the remote pattering of feet on tile. Shivering, she called for Noire to stay closer to her and she was cast in her blue-ish hue. The noises were probably Pokemon or NPCs, Minori reasoned to herself, but another noise was starting to shake her. The childrenâs laughter was distant. The echoes were faded. Minori turned around quickly to face the coming sound: heavier footsteps heading right towards her.

Ship Name:Â
Static Ship: Her world is in monochrome and his is electricity and coding. If you put them together, itâs a bit like static.
Ship Song(s):
I just wanna run to youand break off the chainsand throw them awayI just wanna be so muchand shake off the dust that turn me to rustSooner than later, I'll need a saviour
Why my muse fell for them:
Well, they would have a really awkward second meeting considering the thing but eventually I think sheâd feel comfortable enough around him to tell him that she just wants to change. I think sheâd feel a sort of companionship with him because in her mind theyâre both sort of similar, striving for something while feeling trapped.Â
idk tho because i still donât know characters??
Would I ship them: Time will tell but I hope they can become friends in spite of the initial awkwardness.Â

His friendly nature would help put her at ease.Would I ship them: I donât know maybe? I donât know enough about Benjamin ohhmg but they should be friends!! Hopes.

The rain fell hard against the windows now, steadily soaking the wooden chair Minori had set in the doorway. Cold air gusted in with a stretching howl, tugging hungrily at the tablecloths. Pushing herself off her stool, Minori yanked the chair out of the doorway and tugged the door close. Wiping her forehead which had been assaulted by  fat droplets of rain, she huffed. The temperature began to rise to a comfortable level as she walked back.Â
âSorry...Hmm,â Minori shifted her head from side to side. âWell, isnât that a good thing? And it IS original, at least better than xxRaptor99xx or something.â She had seen plenty of those names in her gaming experience and it always made her cringe. You buy a game only so you could name yourself with numbers and xâs. The money, in her opinion, would then be wasted.Â
Sipping at her coffee, Minori swirled the liquid around as she started to reply. âI guess...well, itâs different now, you know?â The waitress paused as she looked down at her cup. For a moment, the only sound filling the cafe was the stormâs roars. When she finally brought her head up, she smiled. âIsnât it a bit less of a game and more like another world? Since itâs like that, I figured it would be better to start treating it as such.â

A Break in the Rain | Minori & Benjamin
With a nod of thanks, Benjamin dumped the cup of milk into the drink and watched as the creamy cloud bubbled to life before sitting on top of the condensed milk. Stirring it, he ruined the effect of the coffee, the entire mix soon turning a light shade of brown.Â
He took a sip, the usually acrid espresso toned down by the milk. He took care not to spill any on the Leafeon on his lap and set the cup down.Â
âI got in game a bit early, so I want with my real name.â Looking at Minoriâs own tag and saw the username Minnow. âI wasnât very original, yours is definitely nice.â He had yet to see anyone with a username riddled with numbers and symbols, but a short simple username was always a score. Â
âGoing by your real name though? Most people Iâve met stick to their usernames.âÂ

Minori chuckled. The Leafeon was adorable and she had gotten attached to her much more quickly than she did most of her team. With a rather pacifistic nature, Dandelion was more of a companion than she was a partner for battle. The waitress nodded. âYeah, my friend and I, when we were little, found this cat once and tried hiding him at school.â She smiled as she recounted the story. The fabricated memory was pleasing to her ear, at least.
Looking down at where he was pointing, Minori nodded again and moved to the back of the counter. Making anything was much faster in game than outside. The process of making coffee required a high enough level coffee maker, beans, water, and whatever special ingredient you wanted to add. With materials gathered, all one really needed to do was select and start the motions. A loading bar appeared above the coffee maker and Minori hummed.
Selecting the glass cup, Minori turned carefully and slid the finished drink over towards him. At the bottom half of the glass was a layer of white condensed milk; this sat beneath dark brown, near black, liquid and light brown foam. âCafĂ© bombĂłn.â She presented the drink with a small stirring spoon and a small cup of milk at its side. Pulling out a seat, she produced her own cup of coffee and nodded. âMinori, nice ta meet cha.â Short silence set in as she pulled up a menu and paused. âWoah, thatâs actually a nice catch for a username! My name was taken so I had to use a fish! Well, not had to but I ended up with it.â
A Break in the Rain | Minori & Benjamin
Taking the menu with a nod, he looked over it without reading what was written. âI wouldnât tell on a cutie like that.â In the few moments heâd spent with the Leafeon, heâd grown to like it. âShe reminds me of a cat that hung around my house.âÂ
Sliding the menu back to her, Benjamin pointed to a picture of a cup of coffee. âThis is fine. With extra milk please.âÂ
After placing his order, Benjamin twirled the chair around and leaned down to scoop up the Pokemon prowling nearby. Its tiny paws dug into his leg, and he shifted its weight until he held the Pokemon in his arms.Â
âAh right, Iâm Benjamin, nice to meet you.â The introduction was late, and with his arms full, he couldnât exactly offer her a hand to shake. He briefly juggled the Leafeon before giving up, settling for a smile.Â

Dandelion moved away as the man entered and then followed him onto the doormat. Minori watched as Dandy hopped off the seat and proceeded to jump about in the rain. The Leafeon then imitated the man by stepping onto the doormat and shaking its body, droplets flinging off her. Minori laughed, the sound lost to another rumbling of noise, but evident in her expression.
âWell, we have coffee, tea...wait.â Opening the drawer, she pulled out a menu and placed it in front of him. Minori was a good waitress but their relaxed situation hardly felt like the moment for her to put on that role. Her failure was in the few rather than the many as she could maneuver working with great numbers with above average ease. âNot a problem at all, just donât tell my boss I forgot to give you a menu...or that I summoned my Pokemon.â At this, the Leafeon produced a meow. Minori made a gesture for silence and sent him a grin. âJust keep it a secret and weâre good.â

A Break in the Rain | Minori & Benjamin
Noticing that heâd been dripping water where heâd been standing, Benjamin offered a sheepish smile before taking the napkins. Backing up to the doormat, he brushed off the worst and rolled up his sleeves to help staunch the droplets.Â
The thunder rolling outside seemed to chide him as well, but caught been the weather and the other player, he decided to stay indoors. âI wouldnât mind something warm to drink.â Tossing the sodden napkins in a bin, he wandered over to the counter before taking a seat.Â
âAnd, sorry about the mess.âÂ

Rushing footsteps hurried closer towards the cafe drawing Minoriâs attention to the windows. Prepared to see yet another person hasten past, she was surprised to find that the man had stopped. Dandelion mewled softly, pushing her head against the manâs hand. Placing her cup down on the counter once more, Minori stood up to greet the potential costumer. âWelcome to Side Street Cafe.â The name was rather appropriate for the little coffee shop and she suspected that either the owner was trying to use the roundabout streets to promote the cafeâs charm or the creators of the game had been lazy with the placeâs placement and decided to play on it.Â
Turning around for a moment, Minori opened a cupboard and plucked a roll of napkins from its place. Walking towards him, she held out the napkins and then placed her hands on her hips with a huff and a grin. Since he was the only one she had seen in a while and with the NPC out of the building, she was anything but formal. âWell we got coffee and some pastries. Youâre welcome to wait the rain out with Dandelion and I.â Thunder interrupted her then, booming and rumbling angrily. She grinned. âYou donât have to, of course.âÂ

A Break in the Rain | Minori & Benjamin
He thought heâd learned his lesson the last time he was in Lumiose. Even though the layout of the city hadnât changed, and arguably never would, Benjamin still found that he was unable to navigate the sprawling city. The numerous alleys and streets radiated like the spokes of a wheel and each looked no different from the other.Â
The steadily falling rain pattered against the cobbled streets and Benjamin made a note to keep an umbrella on him one day.Â
Taking another turn, he dove into another side street, hoping to see something familiar. And it was, given that every street looked the same. Sighing, he walked on.Â
Halfway down, he noticed a chair with a creamy lump resting on it. He slowed down, peering at it. An ear flicked, and Benjamin saw that he was face to face with a Leafeon. Glancing up, he fianlly saw the small cafe was tucked into the alley. He ran a hand along the Pokemonâs head and called out. âHello?âÂ

A Break in the Rain | Open
A light drizzle pattered against the windows of the tiny cafe. Minori leaned over the counter, head resting in her hands as she watched. The smell of wet stone and brick stretched thinly throughout the tiny coffee shop. Drumming her fingers on the counter, she waited. The clock ticked steadily behind her, reminding her of the passing time...which passed ever so slowly. Hidden in the maze-like alleyways of Lumiose in a nondescript campo with hardly any distinguishing features save for the cafe itself, Minori had only seen the occasional confused yet frantic passerby run along in search for cover. But the rain was nice and the payment system was easy. Minori sighed and went to fix some coffee for herself.
The low rumble of thunder threatened the skies, the clouds turning grey and somber with the warning. A prolonged hum and almost dancing movement of the head was followed shortly by a sudden flash of red and the soft yawning greeting of a Pokemon. Setting her cup of coffee down on the counter, Minoriâs footsteps echoed in the quiet cafe as she moved towards the doorway, the Leafeon close on her heels. Propping the door slightly open with a chair, Minori moved back to the counter and sat down. The Leafeon, Dandelion, sat down on the chair and faced towards the rain, enjoying the droplets that fell upon her face. Minori smiled and sipped her drink.
