yoshiki showing hikaru how to handle animals. giving him slugs and telling him to let them crawl on his hand, they're slow but don't pick them up by their shell, it'll hurt them. yoshiki showing hikaru the fireflies at night in their backyard. hikaru squeaking with delight when he pets a cat, finally! yoshiki smiling as he holds the cat in his arms, keeping it calm and safe so hikaru can touch it, showing him how to properly pet it. them watching deer cross the country roads at night when they can't sleep. yoshiki showing hikaru his world of creatures and animals and hikaru loving nothing more than seeing yoshiki happy and in a state of love for the world. hikaru is in love with that smile, no, in love with the way yoshiki's eyes soften on the creatures, and 'hikaru' hopes they soften on it too.

There are nights where Hikaru, 'Hikaru', moves into Yoshiki's bed. It's childlike in the way it clumsily lifts the blanket and seeks to fit up against Yoshiki's body, and of course Yoshiki, ever the light sleeper, jolts to life like something cold just ran down his back. Knowing it's 'Hikaru' only slightly eases the sensation, really. He admitted to himself a long time ago that he was never quite sure what it was thinking. "Cold." it tells him, seeking the heat of that warm soul it knows so well, and the human heat of a body not its own. Yoshiki tenses slightly, keeping his eyes on the wall that he was facing. He could push it away, send it back to the couch or the floor, but there's a wave of guilt he feels instead: it felt just like Hikaru. And if there's one thing he misses to no end, it's him. Yoshiki can't give in fully to the comfort. But he doesn't hate it either. And the worst part is the thing doesn't sleep, not like humans do. It can mimic the motions, close their eyes, breathe in a methodical way, but it's always awake in some capacity, wrapped around him like a snake on a sunning rock. What leaves the worst ache is that it is always up and awake before Yoshiki is. It leaves a familiar shape in the bed. And it makes Yoshiki's chest ache.

yoshiki catching frogs and releasing them in the creeks around the town before his mother and his sister can freak out over them. yoshiki petting the household centipedes. yoshiki finding it an almost magical experience when dragonflies land on him and sit expectantly, resting their tired wings from a perilous flight. watching them go with an admiring gaze as they leave his sight, smiling slightly and finding it comforting that these things that are wanted nowhere else find reprieve in his presence. hikaru laying on his lap, and yoshiki thinking the same thing. brushing strands of white hair out of his eyes, just as calm and comfortable as a stray cat under his care. yoshiki being a respite for things everyone else finds unwelcoming, unsightly, or dangerous.

Please imagine the small, tidbits of care between Yoshiki and "Hikaru". The way Yoshiki carries water for Hikaru because Yoshiki figures out quickly that it doesn't know how to care for the intricacies of a human body, including details like hydration. Hikaru starts getting dizzy while they're under the summer sun and Yoshiki offers him water, knowing he's dehydrated. "Is this something humans need?" "More than you think. Every few hours, ideally." "Oh." Yoshiki's as amused at their forgetfulness as he is at their casual response. For a god of the mountain, it sure is childlike. "What would I do without you, Yoshiki?" Hikaru laughs. "Probably die." Yoshiki says bluntly... but with a little exasperation evident. Yoshiki also being the one to let Hikaru rest on his legs at the end of the long day of walking and exploring and researching. Ruffling his hair with his nails not only because Hikaru seems to purr, but because he's looking for ticks in his hair, or stray leaves stuck in the thick strands of messy white. At least the bright hue of his hair makes bugs and things that don't belong stick out.

In theory, maybe I get the “we’re all just playing with barbies, they’re fictional characters, no interpretation is incorrect because it’s an interpretation” argument. But actually no, not all takes are equally valid. Framing something as an interpretation doesn’t mean it inherently has merit. Some takes are completely incorrect and betray a fundamental misunderstanding of the source material. They just aren’t a reason to harass people or send death threats

Sometimes I hyperfocus so hard on something, I forget I’m a person until someone interacts with me. I feel like some wild animal seeing a human being for the first time. I’m like “oh yeah I’m supposed to speak and stuff”
