This is really a striking documentary that paints a haunting portrait of a country in decline, that’s facing many problems. Flint is a town where the drinking water is poisoned and drug problems are rampant, where people have to wait two days to get a response to their emergency calls and where the chief of police prays to god for more funding. It shows a city people are afraid of the police, and the police feels threatened by the people. Plus, it’s beautifully shot and has a great soundtrack.

Afrofuturists redefine culture and notions of blackness for today and the future. Both an artistic aesthetic and a framework for critical theory. Afrofuturism combines elements of science fiction, historical fiction,m speculative fiction, fantasy, Afrocentricity, and magic realism with non-Western beliefs. In some cases, it’s a total re-envisioning of the past and speculation about the future rife with cultural critiques.

The Nerdwriter, or Evan Puschak, is in my opinion one of the great philosophers of our modern times. A sage in the age of Youtube. He dissects societal phenomena and popular culture with astounding astuteness, of which this video is a good example. In the end he concludes: Spaces are made by humanity, but humanity is made by its spaces too.

You 'know' in your limbic brain. The seat of instinct. The mammalian brain. Deeper, wider, beyond logic. That is where advertising works, not in the upstart cortex.
