I think on a meta level, Gaster represents a story idea that was thrown out. In Undertale, there was supposed to be another character in Alphys' place, but that part got changed. Therefore, Gaster is Alphys' predecessor not only in the universe of the story, but in the story-writing process as well.

Gaster's goal at the time of being the Royal Scientist would have likely been to find a way past the Barrier.

And in getting scrapped from Undertale, he found it.

When we've heard from Allegedly Gaster he does not give the impression of someone who is TRAPPED in the Void- he seeks connection with others, but not necessarily a way out. Being beyond reality probably grants a sense of freedom, but is probably very lonely.

I wonder if his intent in Deltarune is not about finding a way out of nonexistence himself, but bringing those that exist TO HIM.
