this australian guy wrote about the columbia protests when he was a student here. he hid his substack and deleted his social media apps before he went on a trip back to the US to visit friends. he was detained, interrogated extensively about palestine by two border patrol agents, then deported back to australia.
^ that's a quick summary he wrote after the experience. the longer new yorker article is really jarring. link without paywall here

i want to be in this field BECAUSE i care, because i think it's important to have people in tech and ai that care about sociology and politics and ethics beyond the capitalist machinations of it all. and yet. it is so draining. i feel like my entire academic career has been one instance of "don't meet your heroes" after another, people i look up to casually revealing their callousness and breaking my heart in the process. they abdicate responsibility for the way things work as if they don't wield a tremendous amount of influence. i've been vulnerable in front of them because i trusted them and they just turn around and start treating me like a liability or a disobedient child because i [checks notes] have health issues, or care about the scientific value of what i'm doing, or feel upset by having to work alongside someone who fucking sexually assaulted me. now i'm the problematic lab member. the one who's asking too much. if i'm distressed by the news, by people i care about being targeted by the fucking government, they tell me to just not think about it. turn your phone off. stop caring. work harder. work longer hours. work alone and don't complain. i think i am simply not made of the same stuff as these people. and trying to pretend i am is starting to actually kill me

"gambling addiction" is kind of like if people regularly opened pits with spikes at the bottom in public areas and made lots of money from people falling into the pit and so they started greasing the edges and putting these pits in every public space and lobbying to be allowed to install them in people's homes and when someone fell into the greased spike pit in their house they said "oh thats so tragic, they had an addiction to deadly spikes, we obviously support everyone having a safe and healthy responsible relationship with the greased spike pits we're building"
#also like. you can literally play card games without gambling. like just for fun. that's allowed#idk i guess if you really want to gamble on poker with the lads there are safe(r) ways to limit it and not escalate#but my grandpa was addicted to gambling at poker. like just with people around town or whatever#no casino required#and he nearly ruined his life#it's just exploiting one of the most primal parts of your brain#sparse reward = continued behavior#and now it's a whole industry? teenagers can bet on their phones. it's ridiculous#literally every animal is wired this way and expecting people to just not have basic neurological patterns is ridiculous

much less alarmed by the 'cognitive impact' of LLM use than I am by the fact that so many people apparently believe your brain can atrophy or permanently lose function in the space of four months because you used fancy sparknotes to write a couple of essays

it is incredibly frustrating to see people who never gave a fuck about environmental racism or the affects of data centres until they realised they could use it to talk about AI pass around articles about how AI is the reason behind this shit rather than. you know. everything else lol

having anti punitive justice morals sucks because you want to say "man that guy sucks he should get hit with hammers until he dies" but you also want to make it clear you don't think anyone should be put in charge of the 'hit people with hammers until they die" machine.
#mecore#was trying to explain this to a friend awhile ago#' how can you say he deserved to die when you don't believe in the death penalty' well you see i am a fallible human with emotions
