Introduction
As a person whose grown up with rap and the culture that its brought i feel that it has become something almost vital to my life. The biggest days For me honestly are when I know that an album is coming out and I’m just waiting to buy it. I remember when “To Pimp a Butterfly” came out and I forked up the $15 to buy it the day it came out (That may not seem like a lot but it hurt a little at first to buy it. That felt like a bit much for an album). I literally listened to the album staring at the ceiling, just taking in the awesomeness that was gracing my ears. I love the music.
As much as I love the genre, I think I love most the conversation it brings. I love talking to people about the music I listen to and being put on to new music or putting people on to new music. Also, I think that Hip-Hop has an amazing platform for new talent to rise in the mixtape. Because of this desire to spark conversation, and the fact that the mixtape game is what it is, I’m going to be reviewing mixtapes and sharing my opinion on what is coming through that outlet.
I specifically want to try and be able to help smaller, genuinely talented acts that need any boost in attention they can get. I have my own music that I’m trying to work on (I will promote on this blog but you won’t ever see me posting a review on my own projects or the projects of anyone I’m affiliated with. Simply put that is just not cool. There is specifically a history in Hip-Hop of acts who either own magazines or have pull with critics, giving themselves high scores and the biases I think can blur the true quality in the art form.). I get how hard it is to move forward and get your name out in the music industry.
At the end of the day though I want to reach out to fans of the genre and spark conversation. If I can get someone to download a good mixtape or even someone to just listen to my opinion then I think I’ve accomplished something.
Though I do try to be opened to all forms of music in general I will give the disclaimer that I don’t care for Trap music in general. I wouldn’t say the style is bad, and musically I like a lot of the beats. I don’t like some of the artists though and where some of them seem to be taking the art form. Nevertheless i plan on being as fair as I can.
