miss beans is medical-grade good girl ✅ had her annual exam/vaccines last week and everything looked good, then had a PT check today to see how her knee is holding up. dr did find some pain in her knee but no instability, and said she had a lot of trigger points going up her hamstring into her hip, which is likely from overcompensating for the ccl tear. after an hour of stretches and stimulus though she wasn't reactive to any of the points at all, so the dr thinks as long we do some quick stretches every day she should stay in good shape! which is great news; i'd love if we could put off surgery for a long time/ever.

also one of the other drs quite seriously asked me if i pay a groomer to highlight her bangs. hell nah babe these are ✨all natural✨

Keps got these two little bumps under his eyes and he doesn’t seem bothered at all but they’re driving me crazy argh GO AWAY!! I thought they were bug bites but it’s been over a week and they’re just getting more pronounced. I tell him they’re his devil horns but they’re just growing in too low

I know you said you’re planning on taking kep for another herding evaluation once he’s a bit older (and hopefully chilled out a bit) but do you think you’ll ever take stellina to meet the sheeps again? it was super cool seeing your videos of her in action!

so i would like to do more herdy stuff with both of them, yes, but there's unfortunately some complicating factors that make it tricky.

firstly is the fact that, at least in the area i live in, herding classes are not very easy to find; i've done a lot of scouring, and by far the closest place i could find is about 45min away and costs $60 per session. which isn't terrible by itself, dgmw, but that means that anytime i'd want to do anything with herding, it's at minimum a 2.5hr and $60 commitment every time. that adds up.

secondly is that the nature of herding is that it's not something like agility, or obedience, where it's just you and your dog working together - there's also livestock. herding works because animals like sheep and ducks see dogs as predators, which means that even with very tolerant/chill stock, you are going to be inflicting some amount of stress on them if you are letting your dog herd. to me, that means your ends have to justify your means - you need to be doing something purposeful. whether that's a one-time instinct test (like i did with stellina before), or actually trying to train herding. and if you want to train, you need to be doing it consistently (at least once every few weeks, ideally once a week). otherwise, you're just occasionally letting your dog harass livestock for funsies.

and realistically, if i wanted to get serious about it, i could sign up for regular sessions with her. but i don't think i have the extra time/energy/funds to do that, and if i'm not going to commit fully i can't really justify it to myself.

so in summary: i could do more herdy stuff with both of them, but i don't have the resources/opportunity to do it casually, and i'm not in a place where i can commit more than that.
