FINAL REFLECTION

My theatre journey was exciting, tiring but so worth it. Throughout these two years I have understood that acting is what I want to do in life and this is something that I am extremely passionate about and what to do for the rest of my life. It makes me so happy! There were a lot of tears, nerve, annoyance, fulfillment and happiness! But it was all worth it. I have also learned that working as a team is more difficult than it seems at first.

Research presentation

Yesterday I recorded my research presentation and it was extremely tiring. I stayed up till 2 am to finally finish it and upload it the next day. It was difficult to memorize all the information but I made it !! Especially since I have had to record the thing over and over I memorized it. It’s funny because I have recently heard that I am a perfectionist which is something I never thought of myself but I have come to observe is true. Either way I am now officially done with all my assignments!

Solo performance

Today I recorded my solo performance at home. I had multiple tries but the last version was the best and this is the one I have submitted. I had a lot of fun playing Letty and acting as the dumb, cute blonde I might be perceived as :))

I completely forgot to mention this in my post but I recently got accepted to my dream university CALARTS!!

This is us recording our collaborative project!! We had a lot of issues and had to do many test tries before finally recording it. We had issues with the internet, sound and so on. We ultimately switched to Skype and there were fewer problems there but my sound kept being a little bad.

Caroline and I decided to add some narration since the visual effects were taken away. This was the best option we saw and so we went on with the writing. The idea for the narration was to enhance the imagination of the audience of what was happening on stage at that particular moment.

IB has released a statement this week explaining that our collaborative project will have to be held over zoom. This was an awful thing for us as our play is almost entirely based on movement and the visual effects. As mentioned prior our show is extremely symbolic and words are just an addition to the play rather than the key part. We were very sad and disappointed knowing that we have put so much work into it and will not be able to present it. We decided to brainstorm ideas on how to conduct the project anyway. I will not name every single one because there were a lot but the one that made the most sense to us was just making an audio performance or audio with Barbie dolls. This would be done in order to tell us apart. Now that the visual perspective has been completely eliminated and the fact that it will be done over the internet our voices might be difficult to tell apart. Nevertheless we decided against using Barbie dolls as it was causing too much trouble.

Since I am at home I had the opportunity to try and create the dance rountine for my actors in the adaptation of the diaries of Adam and Eve.

I have decided to demonstrate the scene where Eve begins to discover and tries to get acquainted with Adam, and the other one will be once they find their balance. The viewer will therefore be able to see the process they have to go through in their relationship. I feel like not only is this moment crucial as it brings light to the idea that if they have not worked things out between each other they may have also been the last humans but also the process of becoming who they are. They learn how to co-exist in companionship.

To the accompaniment of the songs eve Will begin by following Adam moving slowly and gracefully. Then once the music begins to be faster she will depict all the things she sees and name them and she will show it through large and small hand gestures, running around doing pirouettes and so on.

Adam will not be having any of it and he will just be annoyed by her. His moves will be heavier and slower.

The next scene however will begin by Adam mocking Eve and pretending he’s so interested in everything he sees until he realizes that there is beauty in it. Not only beauty in the world but in her and this is the moment when he starts falling for her.

Here Adam will pick her up, spin her around twice and lay her gently on the floor in between his legs. He will then go down onto the floor through a roll over her head and slide on the floor to get closer to her. He will then caress her face and lay there, motion less holding hands with her. This is how the show will end.

It is Thursday, one day before our floating performance and the whole country just when into lockdown because of the covid-19 pandemic that has unfortunately attacked the entire world. We are extremely disappointed as we were SO READY to perform! We don’t even know when will we be able to demonstrate the beautiful project we created from scratch...

I have been thinking of the costumes I want my actors to be dressed in and I drew this drawing where the actor would wear a skin tight suit in the color of their skin with the classic leaf pattern around their private parts.

Collaborative project

We are adding some finishing touches to our play. We are deciding which directions do we exit through or come in through. Where will every item be on stage and in one and a half weeks it’s go time !! We Have named the play “floating” because the depressed person is almost floating between life and death.

I have thought of the songs I want to use for my DN. The first song is one that I have listened to a lot when I was younger titled “false king” by two steps from hell. This song is perfect as it begins very calm and then escalates until climax and calms back down again. The other song would be one that I found on YouTube that’s is much more positive, peaceful. I also want to play with the lights a little. In the scene with tension I want the light to be cold to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. In the “love” scene on the other hand I want the lights to be warm and brighter to create feelings of warmth and comfort.

Research presentation

Today I made some progress with my research presentation. The bunraku theatre is such an amazing form of art. I learned that it takes over 30 years to become the chief puppeteer!

I have done some sketches of what the final prop and costume ideas would look like. We decided to all be dressed the same to look appealing on stage with each of us having a distinct characteristic. Being dressed in black without any white element will symbolize the sadness that surrounds that person

This is the stage outline we want to have for our collaborative project. We have decided to keep the stage as minimal as possible and to avoid the use of many props. We are doing this as almost every object will have a symbolic meaning.

SOLO

I have been working on my solo performance some more this week. I decided to devide my monologue into specific actions as Stella Adler said one should do. These actions later help in triggering emotions. I also had to elongate the monologue as for university it had to be 1-2 minutes long and for IB it had to be 4-8 minutes. Also adding specific actions to certain moments without the use of words will make the tension rise and make it funnier

I had an amazing idea today. I just realized that an amazing idea would be to create a dance theater like experience. As a dancer movement is a way of life for me an easier way for communicating. And I don’t know why this hasn’t come to my mind earlier but I should really take advantage of the fact that I am a dancer. I have therefore decided to adopt the diaries of Adam and eve through movement. Furthermore sign language is very interesting to me. I have always wanted to include people who are struggling with a disability and create something amazing with them. I have recently watched a YouTube video which will be link down below about a girl on America’s got talent who is deaf and performed a song of her Authorship  by trusting her pitch and feeling the vibrations in the ground.

This also reminded me of a play I have seen sometime ago where Cezary tomaszewski created a play title “a midsummer’s night dream” which was an adaptation of Shakespeare’s play by the same title. In it his actors were blind kids. He showed how every day actions for us can be extremely difficult to those who are blind. he also made many symbolic references to life such as “one mans trash can be another mans treasure” and many many more. Either way I found that very inspiring and wanted to include deaf people in my show and create something unforgettable for everyone who sees it.
