The Cheese from La Mancha
What better way to soothe your soul and feed your spirit of adventure than with some special cheese? Living on a small island without any good cheese shops nearby, it’s become more of a challenge. Even a grocery clerk at our main store agreed that despite a large selection, it was ho-hum at best. But luckily some internet sleuthing about a year ago led me to Grater Goods, a fantastic cheese…

Book Spotlight: Once Upon a Time in Florida
A new frame-worthy Florida coffee table book is filled with 50 uniquely personal stories.
Now that I’m a Floridian with almost two years as an Amelia Islander, it’s the perfect time to share a beautiful new coffee table book on Florida. My local bookstore, which is so much more, Story and Song Center for Arts and Culture, hosted the sold-out luncheon with a Q&A discussion with the editor, Jacki Levine, and a book signing. The book Once Upon a Time in Florida – Stories of Life in the…

Author Spotlight: The Tobacco Wives by Adele Myers
Here’s an introduction to Adele Myers and The Tobacco Wives, her successful debut historical novel set in North Carolina.
Novelist Adele Myers gave us the inside scoop on her debut novel at Story & Song Center for Arts & Culture’s literary luncheon yesterday. The delicious lunch and stimulating conversation were so enjoyable. Meeting friendly locals in Fernandina Beach, Florida, my new hometown, was another plus. Adele’s debut novel, The Tobacco Wives, has exceeded expectations. Many authors only dream of such…

Libraries Round the World: Holiday Lights on the Pecos River
You won’t be disappointed with this New Mexican holiday light show!
New Mexico’s Carlsbad City Library should win a prize for holiday decorations with the best I’ve seen so far. The whole block was lit up and a wonderful surprise for a relatively small city. Later, after a boat ride on the Pecos River, I understood why. Carlsbad City Library The night lights were so unexpected, I returned the next day to see the outdoor statues and go inside the library. Chile…

Libraries Round the World: John Brown’s Last Stand
This library blog took me deep into the past. Hope you enjoy it!
In West Virginia, where the swift-moving Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers meet, abolitionist John Brown and his supporter’s hopes and dreams to end slavery without a full-blown civil war ended in a bloody standoff and arrests in 1859. Today, Harpers Ferry is a great place to wander around historic buildings, shops, cafés, self-guided historical exhibits, and museums. The valley and mountains are…
