Evaluation
For our final major project we were told we were to decide on our own themes. After looking into various topics I chose to do my project on climate change. The reason I picked this subject is because I feel that it is something that affects everyone, regardless of who they are or where they are from. I feel that climate change is a colossal issue that is catching up with the planet at a rate faster than it can cope. Climate change, in my opinion is a subject that is neither discussed enough (even though more people are aware of the effects now than ever before) nor is it taken seriously enough. There needs to be less talk and more action in regards to preserving this planet. That is why for my project I decided to create posters to promote the 50th anniversary of Earth day. Earth day is a day of the year that is dedicated to raising awareness of the damage climate change can cause, how human beings are
contributing to it and how we can help to prevent further damage. For my final piece I also rebranded the company “Earth day international” and created a new logo. Along with this I came up with new, yet powerful slogans.
Actually starting the project was difficult for me as I wasn't sure which path to take this project down. For this project I experimented with a range of mediums. I experimented illustrating with both watercolour paint and acrylic paints, I tested out both colour pens and black fine liners. I also tried two different types of print (lino printing and foam board printing.) I even explored using photoshop to see what effects I could put on my imagery. After some time experimenting I came to the conclusion that my best work is produced when I mix mediums. Therefore I decided that my final piece was going to be a combination of photoshop and illustration (through various paints and pens).
However once I got into the project and got my primary and secondary research done, I was able to get creative and express the seriousness of this topic. Throughout this project I feel I was able to convey the message I wanted to send out very clearly. I feel that all of the illustrations and development in the process to completing this project were all relevant, and I am confident that I did not veer off topic for this project (even though this has happened during past projects).

My fourth and final poster, which in my opinion is the strongest out of the four. The background and slogan indicates that we have no other option and in order to survive we must change our ways and start to care four the only planet we have.

The third out of my four final pieces. I took the concept of carbon footprints, I had done quite a few adaptations of the concept and wanted to follow through with this idea as I feel it is a concept that will enable the viewer the comprehend the damage being done every day. I made the text of the slogan grey to not take away from the impact of the image on the poster. After playing around with the same concept, i.e. using print, watercolour paint, and illustrating with felt tips i decided the best approach to this would be to paint the base pattern and digitally put a boot print onto the image in order to be time efficient.

The second out of my 4 final pieces. This piece was created to represent how humans are a direct cause for global warming and how it is slowing killing the planet. I drew the earth to look like it was melting with a bloody human hand print on it, this hand print had a double meaning. The first being that we are the main cause of destruction towards our planet, as well as the fact that if we kill this planet we kill ourselves too. I made the slogan at the top the same colour as the bloody handprint to try and replicate a warning sign.

My first out of four final pieces. This one represents renewable energy sources, and shows how we can use the planet for our own personal gain, without destroying it as result. I applied my logo design and I feel that it really fits in with the theme of this poster. I changed the tones of green used throughout the poster to represent a transition into a greener and cleaner planet. I incorporated pop culture into the slogan (I used a star wars quote) to try and spark a connection between the viewer and the message I am trying to convey.

I decided I was going to redesign the logo for Earth Day International. I tested out lots of different styles of the same concept so that I was able to create the best logo I could (see sheet for alternative designs). I really like this design as the image of the real leaf combined with the cartoon plug represents the transition into clean and renewable energy. I felt this design was bold and makes a clear statement. I feel it clearly shows what Earth day international represents in a strikingly effective way.

Final piece final idea
For my final piece I have decided I will be creating four different posters to help promote the 50th anniversary of Earth day (see previous post) in the hopes that it will make the general public more aware of the issues that come with climate change. These posters will focus on global warming, carbon footprints, and renewable energy sources. with these posters I hope to inspire the general public to live more environmentally friendly lives and to raise awareness of the repercussions we could face if we do not change the way we live.

Science Museum visit
Below is a link to all of the pictures I took while at the science museum. I found the trio extremely useful to my research. The museum was very insightful regarding the likely outcomes that climate change will bring. Alongside this it taught me a great deal about renewable energies and the benefits of using them, as well as possible solutions human beings could use in attempt to repair the damage already done on the planet.

Earth Day Network
Earth Day Network’s mission is to educate the masses and spark productivity in the environmental movement worldwide. Earth Day Network is the world’s largest recruiter to the environmental movement, working with more than 50,000 partners in nearly 195 countries to build a more environmentally friendly planet. More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.
The first Earth Day took place on April 22nd 1970 and activated 20 million Americans and is widely credited for sparking the modern environmental movement. Twenty years later, Earth Day went global, 200 million people in 141 countries took part in 1990.
With the 50th anniversary of earth day approaching (2020) there are high hopes of “a vision of change”. I chose this specific charity because I feel that they are more determined than others to actually make a difference to the planet and have been very persistent in doing so for almost 50 years. Earth day network is a charity that I have full faith in and feel that they actually aim to achieve the goals they set (unlike many of other charities/organisations).

After testing out some different types of print I decided to test out lino printing. Lino printing is something I struggle to do as I find it difficult to carve my desired image into the lino itself. However I felt that this piece turned out as a success, although the actual image is not perfect the prints were very strong and began to represent different things than were originally intended.

For one of my pieces I wanted to convey the concept of a carbon footprint. I wanted to be able to express the effect just 1 persons carbon footprint can have on the whole planet. For this specific piece I tried printing but by using the sole of a shoe. The only issues I ran into while creating this piece was the shoe used to create the image was worn down so the print looked almost incomplete. However I feel that if the sloe had not been worn down I would have ended up with extremely strong imagery that conveys a very powerful message in a simple way.

Here are the various foam boards I used to create the prints on my sheet. Never having worked with foam board before I found it quite difficult to maintain a crisp image. However after a few attempts I managed to get the hang of it and I feel my prints came out very successfully.

Outcome change
After looking through my work and gathering feedback from both teachers and peers I have decided to change my final outcome. After sitting down and reflecting upon my ideas I decided that giving these illustrations a different purpose could make them much stronger. My outcomes purpose will still be to raise awareness for climate change, but in a completely different way. I will create advertisement posters for a charity that promotes awareness and prevention of climate climate change. Hopefully this outcome will have more of a widespread positive effect.

Matt Pettis
A tattoo artist working at Through my third eye tattoo parlour in london. Petties varies between two very distinctive styles of illustration. One uses detailed dot work to shade and add depth to his illustrations, the other uses thick lines along with block shading and dainty lines. Both of these styles I find beautiful and dynamic.

Merry Morgan
A tattoo artist working at Black Inc, Somerset. Focusing on only blackwork I find Morgan’s Work intriguing. My favourite part about his style is the way he shows imagery through other images. His ability to show different images in each piece astounds me and I hope to incorporate this style into my own designs.

Charlotte Ann Harris
A tattoo artist working at Penkridge Tattoo Studio in Stafford. Her main style is traditional, with bold colouring and soft imagery. However she also does detailed illustrations. I love the way she manages to create bold statements with bright colours, yet still keep the images dainty and soft on the eyes.
