Don’t mind me. Just thinking about how Thorfinn’s gut reaction upon seeing Askeladd take a fatal stab to the chest, was to catch him from hitting the ground.
How his screams and yelling were basically just him pleading with Askeladd to stay alive.
No longer thinking of killing him. Hell, not even thinking. Just the same awful feeling he felt when his father died; taking on a similar stance he had with his father, the same clinging onto but to Askeladd instead.
And how right after he died, he immediately went to kill Canute. Not even challenging him to an “honorable duel” like he did with Askeladd. Just going for the kill. The only reason Canute didn’t immediately die was because of Thorkel intervening.
And how we are led to believe that he’s fighting against the guards reaching out to kill Canute but instead we see the camera move towards Askeladd’s dead body; almost as if we are looking through the eyes of Thorfinn; and Thorfinn drops his knife, still reaching out desperately, not for Canute,
but for Askeladd.
