Final Crit Response and stuff
Well that was an amazing class. I love having a semester where I really feel like I’ve made so much progress in figuring out what I actually want to do with my work. I also feel like I had a much stronger connection with the majority of this class than I normally do.
As far as my last crit, I was really interested in the conversation about this lifestyle crafting through social media images. A lot of my old friends from high school are very much a part of that fad. I think the class got what I was doing with my piece - I like the responses and I’m happy with what I made. But I think I need to make the piece deeper. Make room for more thought within it that isn’t just “oh i get it”. Maybe more conflict, which may come with less understanding but I think I often don’t want everyone to understand completely.
At the end here, I’ve realized a couple very important things about my work. I’m a maker. I like to make. I like crafting things. I get very attached and satisfied with the physical things that I make. That’s what I enjoy in my work. The pleasure comes from making a bunch of stuff. Sometimes this is a little difficult to manage because I will spend too much money on a project because I just want to make this stuff and I refuse to do it any other way. It’s also hard to manage time wise - I get a little overly ambitious with the amount of time I can actually spend making.
I’m happy with the new techniques I’ve acquired this semester. I’m having a lot of fun with wax - dipping things in it and casting it (I’ve been thinking about using my left over magenta wax to dip bones into). I’m getting more and more confident with the woodshop. I’ve really expanded my use of plexi glass. I’m happy with how I’m incorporating photo in my installation - I think this last installation is kind of close to being what I’ve always wanted to make. I love my digital negatives. I think they’re so beautiful and I want to keep embedding them in my work. I’m really happy with my frame making technique that I’ve used for my past couple works.
I want to get more into welding and mold making for sure.
The pillows are something I’d like to continue too. I like making people look at images in a different position like that. I think it really makes the viewer digest it differently. Laying down and looking at something is like day dreaming, star gazing, cloud gazing. It’s just a very different feeling when you have to lay down to look at something. I want to find new ways of containing images and making people look at them in new positions. I also really like the words on the pillows. You read the word and it’s in the back of your head (literally haha) while you’re looking at the images.
I’m now considering the melting wax casts with negatives in them? more destroying and containing kind of things. With my melting wax project I really liked making these very specific structures to facilitate the melting wax. To me it kind of elevated it’s importance. I think I’m so into the wax in my work because I can craft it and make something physical with it but let it change and perform for me while the work is being viewed.
I like how I’m staring to get personal with my work. It’s not not necessarily about understanding a personal story completely or fully comprehending something about me. But I think I’m using my personal things to convey a feeling or experience, the part that comes from me or could be seen as about me is just kind of a vehicle.
I also think I should mention I’ve found the perfect amount of photo that I like to be involved in. Just one class. One class per semester. Just having my alt processes class but being mostly involved in the sculpture department felt right.
I’m now figuring out what I do when I’m given the freedom to do what I want. I’ve never had quite so much freedom in any of my assignments anymore. And before I was afraid what I would do with all this freedom would just suck, but I think I’m figuring it out. Corin, I think you were the perfect basic sculpture teacher for me and I’m really inspired by your work, especially your transformation of images. I’m going to try really hard to get into the internship program next spring. Thanks a lot for making that opportunity more possible, something like that is really something I wasn’t sure I would ever have the chance to do.

First few here. You can really see the weirdness from the back

I decided I'm cool with the weirdness in some of the values and I'm just going to keep dipping

Really didn't damage it too much. The highlights got a little weird though. The top half has been dipped in wax, the bottom half hasn't

Some slightly different results from my test dips. I think I need to turn down the heat once all the wax is melted
