i feel like so many people misunderstand redemption arcs. they’re not about forgiving past actions. they’re not about softening previous behavior. redemption arcs are about realizing past behavior was heinous and resolving to be better, do better. that’s why so many redemption arcs fall apart upon close scrutiny.

Yee, after playing this game as much as I have, it really is hard NOT to love the cinnamon roll that is Pure Vanilla~ 🥺🩵 A humble healer man who tries to see the good in everyone (even at his own detriment at times), went through many hardships + came out a stronger hero each time (esp around Beast Yeast's timeframe), and now having formed an even-bigger support group (both old & new) in his life, just... aaaaaa he's SO in need of the biggest hugs & kisses asap, Istg 😭🙏💕

i’m in my feelings (El Laberinto del Fauno)

I just finished re-reading the novelized version of El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan’s Labyrinth) and I just- AAAAAAGGGGHHHHHHH

It’s probably one of my favorite stories of all time and it’s like, really the only story in which I don’t even know which medium is better/I prefer if the book or the movie, because both are so top notch and depict the story in such a beautiful way, the movie has unforgettable visuals, impecable direction, every single actor captured their character in such a perfect way and everything, the color palette, the sets, the costumes create such an immersive world it’s just- chef’s kiss

And of course, since this whole story is a fairytale intertwined with the horrors of war and the worst of humanity, there are both moments in which the horrors are depicted in an almost beautiful light in a very cinematic way, and. There are also moments where the horrors are depicted just like that- misery that shouldn’t have happened but is inescapable in the story.

And the novel on the other hand, provides more world-building for the underground kingdom, having tiny fairytales every 5 chapters or so to give us more clues and context, never confirming but always weaving the story together of how every piece of Ofelia’s trials came together and what their origin was, sometimes it’s obvious, sometimes it’s more interpretation and sometimes it’s clearly just meant to be a parallel.

my personal favorite of these (spoiler) is The Razor and the Knife, in which a witch who is mentioned several times in the fairytale chapters gives her son and daughter tools to help them in life, the son gets a razor that can shave off bad memories but is adviced to use it with caution, when it eventually gets in the hands of a bad man, it shifts it’s function, now bringing the worst to the surface. The daughter is given a knife that can slice through the masks men often wear.

Later on we learn that 1) Vidal, our cruel capitán and villain shaves everyday, obsessed with perfection, his image and looking polished and 2) Mercedes carries with her a kitchen knife that she eventually uses to cut up Vidal’s face.

The razor and knife are obvs not the same ones from the fairytale… but it does weave together the story just a little more, tilting the horrific into fantasy and making you think on just how much of that magic and fantasy spills over into the war plotline and characters.

I don’t know how the fairytales just don’t feel like exposition or context at all, instead if feels almost like a puzzle, and also like small nuggets of knowledge about the underground kingdom and its habitants as well as how our world has been impacted by it

And the inner dialogue and thoughts are just everything to me. Every character we hear from (mainly Ofelia, Vidal and Mercedes) have so much depth and intriguing characterization. I also adore the Doctor and the small peaks into the mind of Ofelia’s mom that we get.

Vidal, who lived a liar and was obsessed with his own death and legacy, had such a perfect and cathartic ending, it is prob one of my favorite ends to a villain of all time, he truly gets smacked across the face with reality, with the fact that his death won’t be what he always thought it would be; glamourized, dramatic and foreboding.

Mercedes is such a good character, I love the fact that she tries to bury her soft heart but does very much eventually see Ofelia and her brother as her own children. Her main character trait though is bravery and her wit to use her own invisibility to her advantage.

And of course Ofelia, I love the complex feelings she has towards her brother, the way she craves the fairytale land, how she feels betrayed by her mother but still loves her with all her heart. How she knows far more than the adults around her realize, how what she learned she learned from magic and fairytales to help her face the real world.

I just- ugh I love this story so freaking much.

If you haven’t seen the movie or read the novel, either one I cannot recommend it enough, it’s such an amazing story

🌱 Happy Birthday, Beaumont! 🌱

Today is the last July birthday, with it being Prince Beaumont Erdmann's birthday~! 🎂 With Beau, all of the Erdennian royal family's portraits are done! The next will be the Arianian royal family in early October, but then the Mareasian and Feorian royal families won't be done till late November and late December, respectively.

For Beau's portrait here, there have been some minor color changes from his 2020 ref, with the most intentional one being his undershirt changing to white. Like Avani, I decided to also give him some slightly pointy ears, to match what I gave their father back in January. Beau has also been one of those characters I don't draw nearly enough(the last time was a sketch of him 15 years later, from last year), but I think he came out cute here!

Imagine finding out your papa was sentenced to death for killing your adopted brother’s original father. Soon after, said brother says “he choses death” and goes missing, leaving you all alone. But he wouldn’t just die, he just feels defeated after a defense attorney ruined his record, right? The same one who got your dad killed, in fact.

So you travel abroad to bring your sibling back restore your family’s honor by defeating that attorney in court. You have to win, no matter what. Then your brother just shows up out of nowhere to say “Hey i’m passing by to say u suck, stop being immature lol” and a day later you get shot like your dad and he takes over your case.

This is what happened to Franziska Von Karma.
