very loosely, a follow up to this jack comic from last year!

behold! the king. there's no room in his kingdom for heroes, miracles, terrors, or the other-worldly now, his reign is one of order--

--and then word of a giant killer called jack reaches his courts.

man. alright. let's assemble the thoughts. so last year I posted some jack illustrations, mostly about the giant killing and the beanstalk stuff. on and off since then I've been reading up on jack tales, folklore scholarship, etc. as one does. I also did a full re read of j.g. ballard's novels! that was mostly for myself, tbh, but the drowned giant remains an essential piece of inspiration and reference for this.

since then, I've work shopped the original idea and started hacking away at a plot. the initial idea is mostly the same: jack finds a giant, dead, and the story spirals out of his control. & now there's a king! kings make a semi frequent appearance in jack stories!

onward! jack can be considered a kind of trickster character, other times he's an everyman, but in some stories there's a kind of economic anxiety underneath them that's really fucking compelling.

being abused or neglected really makes it clear how many things are skills that nobody really treats as. skills. exercising autonomy is a skill. listening to your body is a skill. resting is a skill. being liked and being loved are skills. nobody tells you how to do this shit because nobody even told me I was supposed to have learnt these things when I was a kid. I kind of just have to manually figure out what makes me freak out and work from there. unfair as shit

and a shoutout to the two Māori men who travelled to Vienna in 1859, got themselves apprenticed as printers (and incidentally became accomplished ballroom dancers), and finally had an audience with Franz Josef where they charmed him so much that he sent a printing press to New Zealand….which was promptly used from 1861 to print the newspaper of the Kingitanga anti-colonial movement.

I feel like something fandom massively underrates about itself is its detailed and unrestrained feedback.

Like, I've had people go absolutely nuts in reviews for my fanfic: analysing one line after the other , picking out one-liners they think were funny, shrieking to the high heavens about character decisions, etc. And that's so much fun! That's what you want, as a writer! And I've just started getting feedback for my original writing from who I would politely label as Normal People (eg not tumblr/fandom folk), and everyone is awfully lovely, but it's so polite. One, two lines that can pretty much be distilled down into 'this is good, would like to read more of your work'.

And obviously I don't want to appear ungrateful, because any feedback is welcomed feedback, but also...I miss the lunacy. I miss the line-by-line analysis that looks like the Red String guy with his conspiracy board. The kind of reviews that would make your neighbours think about changing the locks on their doors if they could see them. The unbridled and shameless use of gifs. I want that for my original writing. And I do think we underrate it in fandom.
