It feels like learning computer networking would give me mental illness.

Ok So it turns out using an online tool such as a website or browser extension is unsafe because then those will know your private key and pass phrase. Supposedly that's too big of a risk and could result in a man in the middle attack.

hacking people's devices with spyware is a hacker thing. you may find hackers employed by various government agencies or working independently. the latter is usually illegal though.
