WMX Returns!
Motocross is a thrilling and demanding sport loved by people of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds from all around the globe. In America, the professional level of the sport is ruled by the American Motocross Association (AMA), which has held professional races for over 50 years, with both the 250cc and 450cc classes being a constant. The class that has not been consistently on the race schedule, however, is the WMX, or the Women’s class. The WMX concluded in 2018 due to budget cuts, underwhelming turnouts, and a shortage of television airtime.
As a woman who has been involved in this sport and the industry for some years now, it has been frustrating for the past few years seeing the younger generation of female riders have nothing to work towards in a professional career racing their dirtbikes unless they choose to travel to Europe where the WMX is still a semi-respected function.
Recently, the WMX was brought back to the States by MX Sports Pro Racing with an 8-round series of races, spread from March 2024 to October 2024. While this is a huge step in the right direction, the series already has fans stating they want to know how they are able to watch these races that are not yet televised. I don’t want to knock the series or the promoters in the slightest, because the fact that women racers have regained the opportunity to participate in the sport at a professional level and on an even playing field is amazing and I’m sure it was difficult to organize just those 8 races. However, it would be the cherry on top to have a way of watching these races from the comfort of the couch. It is even more encouraging to see that both men and women want to see more of the WMX as evidenced by multiple different comment sections of dedicated fans on the promoters' recent Instagram posts.
If the revamped WMX series were to hit the ground running and continue to grow, the future generations of female riders will have a career option to work towards and the general fanbase will have one more epic race to look forward to watching on the weekend. The readdition of the WMX sounds like a win-win to me!
