asians, including south east asians have long been considered the model minorities.
the stereotype is that we are your tech people, the smarts that work under your leaders. white people were happy to have us. as long as we stayed subservient. don’t speak up, don’t make any noise. bow your head, be grateful we let you into our great country and go find a corner away from us to live in.
now, suddenly there’s too many of us cause your government let us in. there’s too many to ignore. why are we suddenly visible. the whites can’t take it.
(don’t point out that they are immigrants to this land as well and it doesn’t belong to them, cause that is only meant for mindless readings of land acknowledgments at the beginning of presentations.)
now we are the problem minorities, but it’s canada. so the white people are nice. you hide behind the internet and show us your hate in the comment sections.
but how long will the real-life micro aggressions remain micro? how long will the canadians remain “nice”?
i’m scared.
weirdest thing about being a desi immigrant in canada right now is experiencing how we have changed from model minority to problem minority over the past two years.
