damn dropping some rothbard on tumblr. although i'll point out that rothbard died in the 90s, so it's not a primary source.
i think the thrust of rothbard (& mises) is basically that human action is rational but people have subjective values, so they both probably would have hated the idea of a/b testing to determine preference, especially the idea of tuning to the preferences of the aggregate users
i keep loling thinking about how tumblr thinks
that somehow "growth" will lead to more money, unlike literally every single other website on planet earth that has thought this and immediately crashed and burned
that the ideal user is someone who is too stupid to use the current app and so scared of stimuli that a chronological timeline would be too intellectually taxing
that its somehow tumblr's fault if users see things they dont like on their own dash that they cultivated themselves by following specific people on purpose

Assuming it would be throttled so you don’t get flooded with notifications.
Just testing this tbh I don’t remember if you get notifications at all.

it’s all good. i try not to take stuff people say personally, and it’s better imo to post bad takes here and be wrong than to waste months building and testing stuff that are pointless. So I try to see it as a positive, and it builds my intuition about what people want.
to your point, is a new user going to care about the history of tumblr or install chrome extensions to make the app usable? probably not. existing users don’t see what’s broken because they’ve already overcome the hurdle of what makes it hard.
differentiation is also important, and if it’s too homogenized then people will stick to the social media that they prefer, so i get that there’s a line.
Thinking out loud some more…
I just realized that the number of Notes on a post are inclusive of likes. It kind of seems like a misnomer to me. Maybe Engagements makes more sense?

One thing that’s confusing is that if you do 2 or 3, the tags from the previous reblog are hidden, so is there a reason for doing that? eg too inconvenient to reblog the original, intentionally trying to keep a chain going, doesn’t matter so don’t care, etc

This was really fantastic. Andrej is the head of Tesla AI, and he is so good at explaining things in an educational way.
On my MacBook Pro, I was able to get a LLM that could output words that kind of sort of looked like English, but the input dataset was Shakespeare so I guess it did ok.
It’s also really easy to follow along, as long as you have a Python background, and he takes you step-by-step how to build the self-attention heads by scratch.

This is a great UI update, it actually looks clickable now. This is definitely one of those things where you stop thinking about it when you get used to it, but it makes a big difference to new users.
Also annoying to me how things you think would be clickable aren’t. We have buttons like “View this Note”, but why not just make the whole thing clickable

Are notifs capped at 99 haha
hm, I think notifications on iOS are kind of wonky too.
if I click on a push notification, I don’t think we should still mark as unread in the notifications tab. Maybe a cache invalidation issue?

Personally I really like how TikTok’s comment section looks. Really crisp design.
