Reflective Critique 3
The first Question I will be answering is:
Cell phones have become important tools for activism. Explain how cell phones give power to individuals to document and share social injustices and enable movements like #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo to gain momentum. How does this ability change who has the power in society make sure to explain the Hawthorn Effect? Any examples should be from the last 5 years.
Cell Phones have become important tools for activism by allowing common citizens to document moments of personal distress others face at any moment in any place. When enough videos or a particularly bad moment is caught on video it can spark a large resistance to a particular idea or sentiment. An example of this is the Ukraine war, in this war many videos taken by civilians show Russia targeting civilian areas to the horror of the public around the world. These videos lent themselves to support Ukraine around the world, as the world saw the horrors of war fresh again through civilian eye’s. This led to an anti-Russian stance from many people across the world and a flood of support for Ukraine through donations and humanitarian sources, all of this was magnified by the spread of civilian documentations through social media due to the injustice the Ukrainian people faced. This ability to channel the event’s of an injustice into an easily relatable form is the power of citizen journalism. This has placed the power of journalism directly into the hands of many Ukrainian citizens. A direct example of this is the 61 billion dollars in military aid given to Ukraine by the US(BBC, 2024). In conclusion cell phones have become powerful tools to the everyday citizen for their ability to capture moments of injustice quickly and when they actually happen.

The second question I will be answering is
How things like #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo (these are only examples - make sure to explain the Hawthorn Effectchoose your own) have changed the concept of power on the web and the world. Find another hashtag from the last 5 years that has also contributed to this change. Explain the hashtag and what it changed/is changing regarding the concept of power on the web and the world. Include screenshots of where the hashtag is being used.
People don’t trust traditional media for a variety of reasons like political bias and where they source their funds from. People don’t trust traditional media because it seems out of sync with the modern age. People don’t trust traditional media because it lacks the ability to connect with others because they’re many different ways to get access to the same contents easily like from your phone or other venues. Just to narrow on one topic is the idea that traditional media is more susceptible to political bias. An example of this is Fox News, Fox News has a reputation for being a right leaning news platform. According to Joyella(2023) a lawsuit threatened to show that after the 2020 US presidential election Fox News was “working to keep Trump and Fox’s massive audience from abandoning Fox News” instead of reporting on Trump’s claims of a stolen election. This is a clear example of dishonest reporting that is fueled by political bias and a clear example for why people don’t trust traditional media. This is related to citizen journalism because the individuals who take part in it don’t have a grand scheme or a monetary relation to the news they provide, yeah there can be political bias there too but thats an individual’s opinion not the stance of a “neutral” news network. The acceptance that citizen journalism isn’t perfect is already accepted by those who consume it but the same can’t be said for traditional media where there is a standard to be held and those who have failed to uphold it.

Reflective Critique 2 Newuth's Time Capsule
1. The famous person I have found who used democratization of the web is Newuth.
2. Newuth became famous through his videos on Tiktok, said videos amassed viewership from his like minded peers, Newuth has 130000 likes on all his videos and 5000 followers. The genre of the videos that launched Newuth into fame are mainly dancing and gaming content. How things for Newuth got started on January 13th 2020 when Newuth started posting daily videos about having fun with friends. Shortly after the start of Newuth’s content he switched to dancing to gaming or anime related media, where his first chance in the spotlight began on May 8th 2020 with dance related to a show called Phineas and Ferb hitting over 80000 views. Just 2 months later on July 4th 2020 Newuth hit a hot streak of fame with his video posted that day hitting over 350000 views on Tiktok and the very next day nearly hitting 100000 views, this marks the first day that Newuth had back to back views on his videos. On July 9th 2020 marked the last day Newuth’s Tiktok content hitting views above 100000 thousand views but his uploads still gained notoriety to and he continues to post content.
3. Democratization of the web benefited Newuth’s content greatly. The benefits of democratization in relation to Newuth’s content can be seen in how the access to the web by everyone led to people with similar hobbies congregating on Newuth’s most popular videos. Newuth’s highest viewed content is videos of either dancing or comedic movements related to popular gaming or anime media. People who are interested in gaming and anime media can all easily access content about said interests due to democratization of the web and the effects of such a concept are readily available just by looking at the views on Newuth’s content.
4. Without democratization of the web Newuth’s content would be limited to a much smaller group of individuals who may not be interested in gaming or anime related media so the chance of interest forming on Newuth’s content without the community forming effects of democratization are slim to none.
