What kind of trouble is it now? A body of a stranger lies in the wastes, which isn't unusual in itself. When the body starts talking, well- That's also Tuesday. But the unforgiving Wasteland isn't a place for joyrides…

”Bet you're wonderin' why I stopped ya. Well, I got a rather lucrative business opportunity that you'll want to hear about,” Junkrat started, gesturing expressively as he spoke. He pointed both hands straight toward Sumu as if making a real business proposal.

”You're nuts. You stopped an entire truck's worth of Junkers just for a chance to talk to me? If they see you, they'll shoot. And how did you know I'd even be with them?” she pressed instead, pushing logic onto the manic situation at hand. Junkrat blinked once, but otherwise didn't miss a beat.

”Give me some credit, sheila. I've lived me whole life here on the dust fields of 'Straya. If they hire you as a Junker, they'll either get some easy use outta your penniless body or get rid of ya for good. Unlikely someone with your combat skills will be stabbed to death on a street corner, either.”

Hm. Sharper than he seemed. Still, she couldn't help but think back to her conversation with Mickey on their way to the desert. Junkrat wouldn't have a reputation of a crazy person for no reason. And knowing the people of Junkertown, he couldn't have been thrown out for a minor offense.

”Now hear me out already!” he exclaimed, then seemed to flinch and nervously giggle when he realized his volume had gotten too high. His eyes flicked nervously around the corner before returning to Sumu. She stared him down.

As the man dragged the sign inside, Sumu took a quick step just over the doorway.

”'Scuse me?” she chimed, voice much lighter than that of the average Junker.

”I'm closing for the day, sheila,” warned the man with not too much weight to his voice, back still turned to her. Bold. Or possibly, he just didn't care.

”Bruce, I take it?” she continued, unperturbed.

Sumu mistakenly thought that was the end of the conversation and was about to allow herself to get comfortable again. Then Junkrat opened his mouth anew.

”So what's a foreigner like yourself doing here in the Outback? Don't exactly strike me as an outlaw. And I've got an eye for these things! A lot of things, in fact!”

”Do you now?” Sumu mumbled tiredly.

”Yeah! I mean, fancy clothes, tech that ain't banged up or made from scraps, fancy hairdo–Not exactly commonplace here in the Wasteland!” he listed on his mechanical fingers, ”'Sides, you got no persona to speak of. Outlaws tend to like their reputation, if I say so meself!”

”Be quiet,” ordered Roadhog. That was the second time during this encounter he'd uttered as much, so Sumu thought the constant chatter must've been commonplace. Another fate she had to resign herself to.

HISTORY

Early Life

Sumu's parents divorced when she was young. She became estranged from her conspiracy-minded mother, but her father was more than happy to fulfill the role of a responsible guardian. She grew an interest in sports through her father, and traditionally feminine activities were put aside before she rediscovered them in her teens.

Army

When Sumu was 19 years old, she was conscripted by the Finnish Defence Forces. Though she performed beyond what was expected of the average soldier, it were her special talents that gained the interest of her superior officers. They chose her for the scouting unit to utilize her gifts in observation and endurance. Before her conscription had ended, Sumu had been talked into choosing a career in the army, despite her father's wishes to the contrary.

Nordic Alliance Task Force

Sumu was chosen out of the Finnish army to join the task forces brought together by the Nordic countries. They were once brought together to counter the Omnic Crisis in Northern Europe, especially Sweden, but are still operational. She joined Unit K, which specialized in scouting. She was assigned the number "8" as the eighth member, and quickly earned the nickname "Kate" from her teammates. She was encouraged to undergo cybernetic upgrades to further improve her capabilities. Sumu refused all but what was unavoidable, not wanting to augment her body despite continuing on as a soldier. She was trained in controlling Surveillance Drones that aided her in scouting and combat scenarios.

MIA

Task Forces K and D were sent to retrieve a missing Danish scientist studying the radiation in the Australian Outback. They encountered a group of Junkers and engaged in a firefight where Sumu was separated from the rest of the task force. This left her stranded in the desert, unable to contact her team. Though there's another mission planned to go retrieve both Sumu and the missing scientist, they’re not optimistic about finding her alive.
