Hibiki’s first big fight from Season 1 stands out to me above everything else from Symphogear even after watching the entire series twice. Idk what it is but this sequence is my favorite above even the higher budget stuff.

Maybe the lower budget and different art direction of the first season gives it more contrast but I always come back to it and just like “goddamn this is so animated”

We all got that one homie that goes and speaks to the head on the stump. The one that must’ve been a deer’s, at one point. It’s rotted so badly now that it’s hard to tell, but it had to have once been a deer’s head. It had too have been. Nothing else would make sense. Nothing else would fit that shape. Surely. It surely had to have been a deer’s head, upon that stump.

Hm, yeah? Oh, you want to know what my superpower is? It’s fair that the suit threw you off, I’m not really one for spandex. Especially not after Sir Spindexter literally tied that one guy in knots with his suit but ah anyways I’m sure you of all people don’t need a history lecture. So, my power is to fill conceptual voids. Where something is missing, you know? I can sense them if I really try, but that gets a bit obtrusive so I don’t tend to mention it to people. What I can do is like, say you skipped breakfast today. Instead you just got up and went straight to work. That whole regular part of your morning, the concept of “breakfast” is missing. I can fill that. You’ll feel fuller, more awake. Food won’t be missing from your fridge or anything, and you won’t get any actual nourishment but the concept of it that you lacked will be filled. Your cells will act a bit better, and you’ll feel like you had morning coffee if you usually do that but it’s more…placebo, I guess? Yeah, that’s a close enough word for it. Say you grew up without a father. I can fill that void. Just a hum in my hands and a spark in my eyes and then you’ll be a bit more self-assured, maybe have a different relationship with your mother and masculinity and all that. I’m not much of a fighter but it can change up how someone acts mid-combat I suppose. The tricky bit is the side affects. Say I did fill the void your father left. Maybe you might come home one day to fresh-grilled bacon on a plate in your living room. The smell of cologne and aftershave in your family bathroom. You might hear boots clomping around upstairs, see a real badly slanted shadow of a man in the guest bedroom once or twice. I don’t usually fill up the voids people leave. Those get the worst for side affects. Others tend to go missing and all that, weird sticky films left behind and stuff. As far as I can tell, most powers pull from somewhere or another. Some guy like Brazen Bolt, his electricity has to originate somewhere or physics would kinda fall apart. But I can’t be somewhere we know or understand since he makes way too much for that to make sense. So powers pull from somewhere else. Best I can guess from that is that my power is faulty somehow. Or maybe even working as intended. It doesn’t drag the two ends of the gap together, it fills it with something. Maybe something we don’t entirely understand. Maybe something that brings other things with it. Whatever it is, I don’t really care to know.
