okay i just had a bad epiphany but corporate interest’s influence on the internet is going to become so much stronger now that generations that are internet naturalized have grown up and starting working as “social media consultants”. advertising is going to become so much more subtle, manipulate your behavior to a greater extent, and completely pervade every aspect of our lives the more we rely on the internet for everything from entertainment to social validation.

What is time poverty?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
How does time influence the lifestyle we choose? When I was in college, the dominant class activists constantly challenged me to choose between the messaging of climate justice or my mental health and being seen as less than. Time poverty is defined as the chronic feeling of having too many things to do and not enough time to do them and it is increasing in society. The common thread is that both time and financial poverty intersect and shape how people act. Many economically disadvantaged communities of color that are systematically oppressed by the laws and policies implemented by governments are the same ones with the least access to opportunities. Now, even if we follow a time structure, we have to think of the system of adults processes: such as if you live in a low-income neighborhood that has a dense population, you lose time going back home because of traffic, compared to a rich community that doesn’t have as many people in their community. Our jobs are not created equal. We know for a fact that many working-class people are often the most brutalized in facing injustices compared to those in higher-end salary jobs. Yes, all jobs are toxic, but for many people who have intensive jobs, this also affects their ability to take care of themselves. Our health is being robbed for many of us and it is not fair. I share with you all the lack of patience I have developed over my childhood years for waiting for public buses, especially in Los Angeles. A friend in college once shamed me for asking if we could Uber back to campus as I did not want to wait for the bus and they instantly shamed me and told me that they thought I was an environmentalist. I explained how my frustrations come from having to wait hours in the heat growing up as a child to get back from school due to the lack of resources in my city and how I want to reclaim my time. The biggest issue is that there is often this glorification of green lifestyles from the dominant class wanting to be perfect rather than breaking down the nuances we live in today in choosing our lifestyles. Before we try to ask others, why aren’t you flight-free, ad-free, vegan, zero-waste, chemical-free, car-free, or whatever lifestyle you choose, perhaps we should also add nuance to these conversations. Yes, these lifestyles are not exclusive to wealthy people, but we must also add that two truths can co-exist. The mentality of, “if I can do it, you can too” can’t be a blanket statement used to ignore socioeconomic inequality and oppression. We have to push for more nuanced conversations and conclude that perhaps there isn’t a set answer but rather an active conversation we should be having in the environmental movement. Dismantling perfectionism is essential in liberating ourselves from an expectation of time poverty. -queerbrownvegan

God there's a Johns Hopkins study out now that says lockdowns in the US and Europe were largely ineffective at preventing covid deaths and only reduced them by around 3% while causing a huge economic burden and my first reaction was okay you're telling me the half assed lockdowns where workers still had to go to work every day and if you were lucky you maybe worked somewhere with a drive thru or outdoor seating but still came into close contact with your coworkers all the time didn't do shit in comparison to the actual lockdowns in countries that provided the means to actually shelter in place without leaving your home for 2-4 weeks and kept deaths to a minimum and got to more or less go back to normal after that until it started spreading again from Americans and Europeans? Big shock.
Then I looked at the report and the authors are all economics professors.
