Some time ago, in New York City, there lived a boy named Credence, who lived with his wicked step-mother and two step-sisters.

His step-mother hated him, and would give him many dangerous and difficult chores. If he failed to perform his tasks well, she would beat him, and call him any number of vile names. Wicked, unnatural, corrupt. And in this way, Credence grew to believe these things about himself.

He had no education to speak of, his step-mother preferring to have him “home-educated,” that he might not become more corrupt and depraved than he already was. You see, Credence’s step-mother believed that witches lived among them. Credence did not believe this himself, but did not dare say so aloud. To believe in witches, one must necessarily believe in magic, and Credence was too old to believe in magic. He had grown up very quickly, by necessity, and could not afford to take comfort from such childish things.
