Brienne followed Renly into war and joined his Kingsguard because she wanted to be close to him - the only man who had ever made her feel worthy (as evidenced by his defense of her at the ball). She knew that she could die in service to him, and was certain that he could never love her, but she did it because she loved him more than her own life.

Jaime followed Brienne north into war and offered himself for her to command because he wanted to be close to her - the only woman who had ever made him feel worthy (as evidenced by her defense of him when Daenerys put him on trial). He knew that he could die in service to her, and was certain that she could never allow herself to love him, but he did it because he loved her more than his own life.

AU where Thor is Jaime Lannister & Freyja is Brienne of Tarth

Freya Was Jacked

So there’s this story in Norse mythology, Þrymskviða. Compressed down, it goes like this: A Jotun steal Thor’s hammer Mjolnir and says he’ll only give it back if he’s given Freyja to marry, as she is the most beautiful goddess in all of existence. The gods argue over what to do for a while before Heimdall suggests they stick a bridal veil on Thor, says he’s Freyja, and pretend they’re giving Freyja (Thor) to the Jotun to marry so Thor can get close enough to the Jotun to steal Mjolnir back. 

Now typically when people talk about this story, it’s with an element of disbelieving comedy. “Oh my god, who would believe Thor was a woman, let alone Freyja, the most beautiful goddess in the world?” 

But I propose a different way to look at the story. 

See, different cultures have different beauty standards. Modern western beauty standards may be a delicate hourglass supermodel, but that’s not always been the case. Greece, for instance, depicted Aphrodite like this: 

Yeah. A Greek sculptor was told “sculpt the goddess of beauty” and they thought “alright, fat rolls, that’s where beauty is at, let’s do this”. And everybody else apparently agreed with them, because up went the statue. Beauty is a malleable concept is what I’m getting at. 

Now this is where it becomes relevant that Freyja is not just the goddess of love, sex, and beauty. She’s also the goddess of war. And the righteous dead. Goddess of war in the same Viking warrior culture that gave us shield maidens, women who wielded seven fucking kilogram (15 lbs) shields in combat. 

Sooooo … when the Norse storytellers said, “This is Freyja, goddess of war and the righteous dead, who rode giant murder cats into battle, she is the most beautiful goddess in the world”, I’m guessing they weren’t thinking of her as some willowy waif. No, I’m guessing they probably thought more along the lines of:

190 cm (6′3″), broad shoulders, built like a brick shithouse, with a jawline like whoa, and fully capable of murdering everything in her path.

Put in that context, the story of Thor dressing up as Freyja sounds less like a punchline about “how could anyone ever mistake Thor in a veil for Freyja?” and becomes more a case of “ohhhhhhhhhhh, no wonder all the gods thought this plan would work”. 

It did, by the way. The plan totally worked.

May I ask for some fun Renly headcanons, because there is hate in his tag again, and I'm sure lots of folks beyond me would appreciate it.

- his deepest secret is that he thinks up some of his witty quips ahead of time. sometimes he’ll wake up in the middle of the night and run to write something down and loras is like “babe what’s wrong” and renly’s like “i’m gonna tell littlefinger that his tiny beard looks like a rat’s tail it’s gonna be so funny” 

- like 80% of why he hates the lannisters is because they’re the only house that consistently outserves him when it comes to fashion. one time cersei & jaime show up to a feast in a matching cloth-of-gold gown and doublet with ruby beading around the collars and renly turns to stannis and is like “why can’t you and i ever pull fucking incredible coordinated looks like that” and stannis in his usual all-black ensemble is like “renly i know my concepts” 

- after their bedding ceremony he and margaery (who tbh i headcanon as a lesbian) started shouting stuff through the door like “oh renly you beast ravish me where i stand!” and “margaery you sly vixen at least wait till we’re in bed!” to convince the people still in the hall that they were totally consummating the marriage. they’re like this is definitely what straight people sound like right

- he always gives loras his favor to wear before tourneys even though he has to hide it under his armor. and then whenever he wins renly’s like “wow… my impact” 

- sometimes he catches himself grinding his teeth when he’s annoyed and is always SO horrified. he’s like “loras if i ever start going bald you need to kill me” and loras of course refuses so renly goes to willas and tells him “if my hairline recedes even an inch i need you to put me down like one of your lame horses” and willas is like “ok :)”

I decided to make a partner piece for the Brienne art nouveau picture. I tried to keep the symmetry as high as possible, I know that Jaime is smaller than Brienne so he is a bit smaller in this pic than her, but not too small to break the symmetry.

I included additional flowers with the general meaning of “Forgive me” “I am sorry” “Don’t forget me”…

The sword he holds is the one he knighted her with ;)

The second pic is both of them in one view. I switched the color palettes for them, symbolizing the exchange in values and experiences, that they’re part of each other now. Brienne got Lannister like colors whereas Jaime got a few of the Tarth colors and some of the North. For me Jon is kind of an honorary kid for JB. He lives away with his boyfriend/husband and their child (it's ghost) but Jaime totally sends him "gifts" like dog toys and ugly sweaters (with a note saying "thought of u dumbass") and checks up with him daily because "god knows that dumbass kid can't stay away from dumb shit" and Brienne calls him weekly to know how he is and basically made a rule that he has to come for family dinner monthly. Sorry i'm a slut for Jon having good, loving parents

AHHHHHH I LOVE THIS!!!!! JB adopted grown child Jon ACCEPTED. Jaime would totally be that dad who texts Jon pics like of roadkill and be like “hahaha made me think of you. Remember that time you died? But for real tho I love you and please make sure you’re eating enough vegetables”
