Fulham Dentist: Dental Beautique - The Smile Specialists
Tumblr media
The Dental Beautique team is committed to delivering excellent dental care and the most effective facial aesthetic treatments Justyna Kamecka (seated) Having spent a while chatting to Justyna Kamecka, who seamlessly combines the roles of practice owner/manager, lead dentist and hygienist at Dental Beautique on Fulham Road, I had one last question for her: “Do you ever manage to get any time off?” ‘Not that much! We’ve only been open for six months and so, yes, it’s been hectic, but also very enjoyable and fulfilling,’ she smiles. ‘The hard work is worthwhile because my dream has always been to run my own general practice. It’s important that everyone here works according to the same philosophy, and by covering several bases I can make sure everything is perfect for my patients!’ Justyna came to the UK from Poland 15 years ago to study at the prestigious UCL Eastman Dental Institute. After graduating, she worked in several London practices, and those experiences have informed her vision for Dental Beautique. ‘Our aim is to provide the very best family dental care in every discipline and all under one roof,’ explains Justyna.
Tumblr media
Justyna Kamecka ‘Whether it’s a routine filling or extraction, preventative hygiene, cosmetic dentistry, implants, Invisalign teeth straightening, periodontics, oral surgery, endodontics or an emergency visit, we are passionate about what we do – and we realise that there’s a human being with the teeth! ‘We treat patients as individuals and, if someone wants a more confident smile, we look at the whole face – that’s why we also offer high quality facial aesthetics such as Environ Skin Care anti-ageing solutions, Juvederm dermal fillers and CACI non-surgical micro-facelifts.’ Justyna's handpicked team of dentists and nurses includes specialists in all fields and she has invested in cutting-edge equipment, such as low-exposure digital x-rays and intra-oral cameras. Equal attention has been devoted to creating a spa-like environment with soothing colours – even the dental chairs have comfortable cushioned memory foam.
Tumblr media
‘That tranquil atmosphere is particularly bimportant for nervous patients,’ says Justyna. ‘We deliberately book longer appointments to allow time to explain a procedure – it’s never a case of open your mouth and say nothing! And, of course, people are welcome to come in for a chat and have a look round before we even contemplate any dentistry. ‘As a practice, we are committed to helping patients to afford their dental care, hence we have regular special discounts. For example, at the moment, we are giving 20% off a regular check-up and children under-12 go free if a parent is registered with us. Just check our website for the latest offers.’ Justyna also sets aside time every few months to give free check-ups and treatment to children who, for whatever reason, can’t afford to visit the dentist. ‘It’s something I always had in mind to do when I had my own practice.’
Tumblr media
‘We’ve had a lovely warm welcome to the area and I’d like to invite Fulham locals to come in to discuss how we can help keep their teeth healthy, their skin beautiful and their smile confident. We look forward to meeting everyone!’ Treatments at Dental Beautique include: Periodontics: preventing and treating gum diseaseOrthodontics: improving the appearance of crooked, protruding or crowded teethCosmetic dentistry: whitening and veneers Endodontics: root canal treatment Oral Surgery: correcting imperfections of the teeth and jaw Dental Implants: replacing missing or damaged teeth Invisalign: invisible braces to straighten teeth

Best Restaurants in Fulham: Locale - Home From Home
Tumblr media
Molly and Linn Choose from the new Steak and Spritz spring menus at Fulham’s favourite Locale When the sun is shining, Locale’s terrace is the perfect place to enjoy a drink or a meal and watch the world go by. ‘I can fully understand that,’ smiles Manager, Linn Hedblom. ‘But some customers are out there in all weathers. I’ve seen couples eating under umbrellas and during Storm Ciara I was asked to roll out the awning. It would have ended up on Fulham Broadway!’ Situated on Munster Road, Locale is a ‘proper’ neighbourhood restaurant with a comfortable, cosy interior and a true family feel. Serving delicious Mediterranean cuisine – the emphasis is on authentic rustic Italian dishes – it is the ideal venue for drinks, group get-togethers and intimate dining. Locale is introducing tempting new food and beverage offers for Spring, including half-price Monday Steak Nights and a tempting selection of spritz cocktails. The latter features the signature SW Spritz, which was concocted by Linn herself. ‘It has lime, cucumber, mint, elderflower and prosecco – and it required dedicated tasting to perfect! ‘On half-price Monday Steak Nights we offer a choice of two excellent Argentinian steaks served with chips, side salad and our signature seven herb sauce for £10.95 and £12.95 and, in addition, we have Friday aperitivos with free flatbreads (5-7pm) if you are drinking at the bar and a daily Happy Hour (4-7pm).’ Locale’s menus (a la carte, Sunday roasts and Wheatfree) were designed by Head Chef Angelo Martello and use only the freshest seasonal ingredients. ‘I’ve noticed that many customers without allergies order from the Wheat-free menu,’ says Linn. ‘The Chilli King Prawns are popular and I’d recommend the sautéed Chicken Madeira breast with mozzarella, green beans, roasted tomatoes and Madeira sauce – it’s superb.’ With a separate bar area – Molly is in charge of all things drinks-related and mixes a mean cocktail – and draught beers from the Camden Brewery, it’s no wonder that former local

Mathnasium of Fulham: Solving The Maths Problem
Tumblr media
Dan and Michael If your children are struggling with maths, transformative tuition with proven results is now available… ‘We believe that every child can succeed in maths using our tried and tested methodology,’ says Dan Tregoning, franchisee of the newly opened Mathnasium Centre on Fulham Road. ‘It is a matter of teaching the subject in a way that makes sense to them as individuals.’ With nearly 1,200 centres worldwide, the Mathnasium method has been changing lives through maths for almost 20 years. ‘We teach children aged 6-16,’ adds Centre Manager, Michael Chitty. ‘The first step for any prospective student is to take a free diagnostic assessment; that enables us to pinpoint what they know, but more importantly, what they don’t know. We then design a customised learning plan to teach the concepts the student needs to master. The results are remarkable – students will see measurable changes in attitude, confidence and school progress.’ Mathnasium operates like a gym, with parents subscribing on a monthly basis. Students attend as many times as they like, whenever they like. Each session lasts between an hour and an hour and a half, with a recommendation of two to four sessions a week. There is no need to book in advance giving parents full flexibility.
Tumblr media
The approach is based on individualised learning in a friendly environment. ‘We aim to operate on ratios of between one instructor to three to four students, whether they are looking to catch up, keep up or get ahead with their maths,’ says Michael. ‘Whilst we don’t set homework, we assist our students with school assignments. We also offer specialist test preparation, tailoring our teaching to assist with 11+, scholarships and GCSE exams.’ Mathnasium has strict criteria for hiring instructors. ‘Of course, they must be exceptional at maths,’ explains Dan. ‘But, equally important is the ability to inspire and communicate with students. So far we’ve had wonderful feedback, in fact some children have been asking to come more often!’ And should a little extra encouragement be needed, Mathnasium has a reward for achievement policy, with toys ranging from Lego to drones and even an iPhone. ‘Of course, the phone takes hard work and outstanding results,’ smiles Michael.

Hammersmith Butcher: John Stenton Family Butchers - Serving The Community
Tumblr media
Jack and John John Stenton describes himself as ‘one of the last of a dying breed’ of local family butchers. Here he reflects on his professional life in Brackenbury Village… ‘Hammersmith is a nice place to work. I have customers from all walks of life and I enjoy having fun with them. The kids say hello on their way to school and I’ve got to know so many family generations – that’s lovely. ‘When people don't recognise a cut of meat, I explain what it is and how to cook it and, on the next visit, we hear all about it. We get some wonderful compliments. One lady said: “Thanks for making our Christmas magnificent.” That's what gets me out of bed at 6am. There are no short cuts in this business!
Tumblr media
John Stenton ‘We source the world’s finest meat. I keep tabs on where it comes from by visiting the farms – I know how the animals are reared. Now’s a good time to order Spring lamb for Easter. Many customers prefer a leg, but my favourite is shoulder double-wrapped in tinfoil We also make and sell mini-lamb roasts – they are perfect for two people. ‘We've turned the clock back 50 years and now wrap meat in grease-proof paper to save on plastic. Customers come in with polyurethane re-sealable plastic bags and boxes; however, using them is like standing in a freezer with your coat on. The cold can't get through to the meat and lower the temperature enough. We suggest glass pyrex containers to keep meat cold while you do your bit for the environment.
Tumblr media
John and Jack ‘We take telephone orders – I always try to answer by the third ring – but I prefer to see customers face to face. We open at 8am on Saturdays, so that’s a good time to avoid queuing and you can pre-order on Friday and pick up on Saturday. Our French customers like meat cut differently and it can take time to prepare, so sometimes you may have to wait a little longer. However, queuing is a good way to meet neighbours! ‘Once, Lenny Henry came in and he said: “I thought you’d have two or three shops by now.” I said: “Len, like wives, on most occasions one at a time is more than enough to handle. ‘I have been serving the people of Hammersmith for 50 years and I'd like to say thank you for supporting me.’ Stenton’s offers organic and free range produce and selected meats from England’s finest farms: Cotes De Boeuf Bavette De Boeuf Tournedos De Boeuf Noisettes D’Agneau Onglet De Boeuf Roti De Boeuf Osso Bucco Poulet Desosse Farci a la Saucisse De Toulouse Paupiettes De Veau Duck Handmade gluten and wheat free organic pork sausages Beef Lamb Wild Boar Boerewors Merguez Chorizos Read the full article

Tumblr media
Neil and Ian Whatever the DIY or building project, Tool Chest will supply the tools at the best hire rates Are you contemplating some domestic DIY, but don't want to buy the specific, and possibly costly, tools required for the job? Whether it’s a power drill, long ladder, sander, carpet cleaner, cement mixer or dehumidifier, Tool Chest in Brackenbury Village is a one-stop hire shop for every conceivable piece of equipment, not to mention excellent practical advice and recommendations. The family-run operation was opened in September 1984 by Ian McCarroll. ‘I was working as a building contractor when I was offered a partnership in a small tool hire company. When my partner unexpectedly left, I just decided to go for it – I was already using our Iffley Road premises as an office. We designed the Tool Chest logo, put up a sign and a friend, Neil Marshall, helped me manage the business while I carried on in the building trade.’ Today, Ian works with his son Neil, who joined full-time five years ago. ‘If we don’t have a tool in stock we can source it – even a five-ton digger if necessary! – and we’re happy to discuss the best options. ‘Also, whether we are supplying builders or DIYers who simply need to hire a particular tool, we offer exactly the same highly competitive rate. We charge about half the price you would pay at a major chain – and we are also happy to deliver to the local area.’ Tool Chest is a Hammersmith business through and through. Ian lives off Askew Road and both his children – Neil and Louise – went to Brackenbury Primary School, as do his grandchildren. ‘So many of our customers are locals. We get to know them and they appreciate our service – that’s a really nice part of the job.’ Tools for hire include: Ladders Breaking and Drilling Cleaning and Floorcare Concreting Heating and Drying Lifting and Handling Painting and Decorating Plumbing and Pumping Sanding and Fixing Cutting and Grinding Welding and Power

Prescription Delivery: Pharmacy on Wheels - Fitness Fuel - Healthcare On Your Doorstep
Tumblr media
Vishal, Tanvi, Natacha and Dylon By combining an online pharmacy and healthy living shop, Vishal and Tanvi Patel and their team have created a valuable community resource Almost three years since they opened on Goldhawk Road, and having survived a burst water main which completely flooded the premises and destroyed their stock, Vishal and Tanvi Patel have built a successful business. In fact, the charming couple, who are both experienced pharmacists, have built two businesses in one: an online pharmacy (Pharmacy on Wheels) and a health and fitness outlet (Fitness Fuel). ‘You could say that we are the perfect fusion of Boots and Holland & Barrett,’ smiles Tanvi. ‘While the concept of an online pharmacy is still relatively new, we dispense under exactly the same NHS regulations as a traditional chemist – and we have the huge advantage of convenience. Patients registered with us have their prescriptions sent electronically from their GP and we make them up and deliver to the door (home or work). If it is within three miles and the stock is available, it’s a same-day service. Also, if a patient has a repeat prescription, we take care of the re-ordering, so there’s never any worry about running out.’ Having supplied drug trays (dosset boxes) to care home residents for some time, Tanvi and Vishal are now providing them to their other patients. ‘We have 28-day trays and they are perfect for everyone – the elderly, the forgetful and the just busy – and particularly those taking multiple tablets daily,’ explains Vishal. ‘Even better, the individual pods pop out, so if you’re away for a few days, you just take the ones you need, not the whole tray.’ The Fitness Fuel side of the business caters for everyone from fitness enthusiasts to mothers and babies. ‘Our focus is on stocking high quality, specialist products,’ says Tanvi. ‘For example, we have the natural skincare brand MooGoo, minerals, multi-vitamins and sports nutrition supplements, and an excellent range of fitness aids.’ With an on-site consultation room in which the couple run a licensed travel clinic, Tanvi and Vishal are a one-stop medical and healthy lifestyle hub. And, if you need assistance, they are always happy to advise.

Chiswick Nursing Centre: Home From Home
Tumblr media
Steve Winter Chiswick Nursing Centre offers compassionate care and excellent facilities in a friendly environment Chatting to Steve Winter, Director of Chiswick Nursing Centre, I hadn’t expected the conversation to turn to Bollywood Wheelchair dancing. ‘Along with the likes of music, art and film nights, it’s been a popular addition to our activity programme,’ he smiles. The Centre, which is tucked away next to Ravenscourt Park, specialises in long-term residential and short-term respite care, 24-hour dementia and palliative nursing and post-operative rehab and convalescence. The building has five nursing floors (they are called suites), all with a comfortable communal lounge, dining room and space in which to socialise or sit quietly. Elderly people no longer able to live independently are in the majority. ‘We aim to create a safe, stimulating home with a real family atmosphere,’ says Steve. ‘Our hotel-quality rooms are en-suite, linen and towels are provided and permanent residents are welcome to bring their own furniture and possessions; we have a lovely garden with hens, a hairdressing salon, sensory room, physio gym and we organise trips to coffee shops, the park and the pub.’
Tumblr media
The first step for any prospective new arrival (or their family) is to look around. ‘If they are happy, we then assess the level of nursing input required,’ explains Steve. ‘Everyone has a personal care plan: as well as clinical needs, that covers the time they like to get up, if they prefer a cooked or continental breakfast (chefs prepare a choice of fresh meals on site every day), a bath or shower and which group or individual activities they might enjoy.’ All the nurses are qualified to UK standards and the Centre has its own experienced in-house physio and occupational health team, who assist with rehabilitation from strokes and knee and hip replacements, and excellent links with external therapists and consultants. ‘We treat people as individuals,’ says Steve. ‘If you enjoy a glass of wine at lunch, why not have one? Those little touches make such a difference. As far as possible, our residents live in the way that they always have.’

Garden Centre: Exploring W6’s Houseplant Jungle...
Tumblr media
Paul Holt Paul Holt has created an exciting indoor oasis called The Green Room at the W6 Garden Centre in Ravenscourt Park Paul Holt has created an exciting indoor oasis called The Green Room at the W6 Garden Centre in Ravenscourt Park In January 2019, Paul Holt, the Creative Director of W6 (and N1) Garden Centre, was killing time before meeting Louise Alhadeff, the Manager, at the Ravenscourt Park site. ‘I was looking at the old railway arch right next to the W6 Café and wondering what we could do with it,’ he recalls. ‘We had tried selling furniture, and that hadn’t worked; Leo, the Café Manager, had looked at using it, and that hadn’t worked either.
Tumblr media
‘Then I noticed a single cheese plant abandoned in the back corner. It had been there all winter with no heating and virtually no light, and yet was still alive. I thought, if it can survive, why don't we take out the doors, re-model the interior and convert the whole arch into a space in which to display and sell high quality houseplants. Fortunately, Louise agreed with me!’ A year on from that flash of inspiration, the original brick railway arch has been impeccably restored and The Green Room – as it was christened – is flourishing with a floor-to-ceiling indoor jungle of houseplants and stylish pots, containers and accessories. It has proved hugely popular with the Garden Centre’s customers. ‘Having plants around simply lifts the spirits,’ smiles Paul. ‘They are so important in an urban setting; even if you only have a balcony, they provide a fundamental connection with nature.’ Having studied Horticulture and worked as a Nursery Manager, Paul was introduced to Beryl Henderson, who had recently opened the N1 Garden Centre, through a fortuitous mutual acquaintance. ‘Beryl needed a temporary Garden Centre Manager and, by pure chance, I’d moved to London with no job.’ That was 20 years ago and today, as the business’s Creative Director, Paul travels throughout Europe, sourcing plants and accessories.
Tumblr media
‘Of late, there has been such a surge of interest in houseplants,’ he says. ‘They offer so much: whether tall, small, trailing, climbing or hanging, they make perfect natural decoration for any home or office. We sell a wide cross-section – from the well-known to bthe more exotic – to suit every lifestyle. For example, if you travel for work, you don’t want a houseplant that demands constant attention; also, since we opened The Green Room at W6, we’ve found that Insta collectors – they tend to be the younger generation – love our more unusual specimens.’ The friendly Garden Centre team are always on-hand to give expert advice on caring for the houseplants and Paul ensures that the range of accessories is constantly refreshed. ‘I always try to reflect current colour trends and because so many people pop into the W6 Café regularly, I need to keep it interesting.’ And finally, which houseplant would Paul recommend? ‘It’s so hard to choose, but I love Jatropha Podagrica, commonly called The Gout Plant. It’s a succulent with a swollen stem, hence the name, small rhubarb-like leaves and neon orange and yellow flowers that come out as a stalk. It’s a real curiosity and a fantastic talking point – I’ve had one since I was 16 years-old!’

London Carpet: The Carpetstore - Luxury Vinyl Style
MAXIMUS - Victorian Treasure Decor - Charcoal The Carpetstore is the only West London stockist of the Invictus range of wood, parquet and stone-effect vinyl flooring As in most industries, fashions come and go in carpets and flooring. Few people are more aware of the latest trends – and better able to respond to changing demand – than brothers Clay and Joe Miller, who have been running The Carpetstore for 25 years.
Tumblr media
Joe and Clay When they add a new brand to their portfolio, as they have recently done with Invictus luxury vinyl flooring, it’s a decision based on market knowledge. ‘We’ve noticed that customers are increasingly favouring vinyl tiles over wood and concrete flooring,’ explains Clay. ‘They are going to be the next big thing – and the quality of Invictus’ wood, parquet and stone-look ranges is really outstanding. ‘They are waterproof, so are suitable for kitchens and bathrooms, they have an ultrastrong top layer (Scratchmaster) that makes them extremely hard-wearing in domestic and commercial settings, they are warm and silent underfoot and, best of all, they come in a fantastic array of striking designs.’ The Carpetstore already offers a huge choice of classic and contemporary carpets for all budgets as well as made-to-measure bespoke rugs and stair runners. Last year, Clay and Joe also began stocking Sedna eco-friendly carpets.
Tumblr media
MAXIMUS - Victorian Treasure Decor - Charcoal ’The yarn is spun from abandoned fishing nets,’ explains Clay. ‘According to the manufacturer, nets comprise one-tenth of marine litter and trap tens of thousands of creatures every year. The carpets are soft and durable and come in two qualities: a twist pile for stairs and living rooms and a Saxony, which is a luxurious deep pile for bedrooms.’ All carpets, rugs and runners sold by The Carpetstore are moth-free – a chemical is put on the yarn while it is being spun, hence it is built in – and Clay and Joe use their own experienced fitters, who also lay hardboard, ply and latex sub-floors and trim doors. If you are investing in new carpet or flooring, whether for the home, office or a communal property, you’ll receive excellent personal service and practical advice.

Chiswick Estate Agent: Whitman & Co - Chiswick’s Number One Property Team
Tumblr media
With 413 years combined residence locally and 235 years property industry experience, no one knows and serves Chiswick better… According to James Matthews, co-founder of Whitman & Co estate agency, there’s no secret to the company’s consistent success in the local market: ‘Our aim has always been to build a close-knit team that focuses solely on Chiswick and, most importantly, knows the area street-by-street. It’s a simple philosophy, but it has stood us in good stead.’ Taken together, Whitman & Co’s 13-person staff has clocked up 413 years of living in the area – it helps that six of them are West London born and bred – and over 235 years experience in the property industry. ‘It was only recently that we sat down to do the maths,’ smiles Sales Director, Chris Chalmers. ‘I must admit, we were surprised by the totals.’
Tumblr media
Chris Chalmers No one better epitomises the ‘keep it local’ philosophy than Chris himself, who joined the company in 2002. ‘My great-grandparents bought our family home in Prebend Gardens in 1926; my grandmother moved in when she was eight years-old, my mother was born there and so was I.’
Tumblr media
James Matthews James and co-founder Russell Savage met at long-gone estate agency Tyser Greenwood and bought Whitman & Co in 1995 (the company was founded in the 1920s by Colonel Whitman, who was also a coal merchant). Today, together with Chris and Jeremy Day, the newest team member and a Grove Park resident for 29 years, they lead sales, letting and commercial departments from the same office on Turnham Green Terrace.
Tumblr media
Russell Savage The Whitman & Co approach clearly still delivers impressive results. According to the latest verified Rightmove statistics, the company is the Chiswick market leader for sales – a position that it has held for over three years – and, since last August, it has also been number one in lettings. ‘With valuations, we are always realistic,’ says Russell. ‘Over the years, I’ve seen countless examples of properties being valued astronomically to secure an instruction. If that’s the case, we pass. We quote figures that we’re convinced we can achieve and that pays dividends in the long run. Also, we’re transparent; we don’t put clients under pressure, we flag up issues and we try to solve them without fuss. If you’re straightforward, people will come back to you.’ Since he started off in the lettings department, Chris has seen the same clients return time and again. ‘What’s fascinating is that you catch up with them at different stages of the property-buying cycle – from rentals to buying a first home and then moving into a family house. Over the last 18 years, I’ve been a part of their lives. That also epitomises what we’re about; customers know that they’ll see a familiar face and receive a friendly service.’ As a successful business, Whitman & Co has always believed in investing in the community, increasing its involvement year on year. ‘We’re always delighted to help if we can,’ says Chris. ‘Currently, we sponsor Chiswick Cricket Club and Chiswick Rugby Club juniors, support the Bedford Park Festival, school fetes and street parties, choirs and charities and, last year, we were delighted to assist Abundance London with the hugely successful Turnham Green piazza project.’
Tumblr media
Denise White ‘The Whitman’s way is all about building relationships – that’s why people often pop into the office for a chat and advice about the market. No matter how busy we are, we keep it personal. Longevity is at the core of our business.’

How to Build a PC: Chiswick Computers - Passing On The Knowledge
Tumblr media
Brenan, César and Steve 'I really enjoyed building my computer and the engineers were very friendly.’ – César Ortiz In 1976 Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak hand-built the Apple-1 in the Jobs family garage, and computing history was made. While King Street may not exactly be California and the result might not be as revolutionary, if you know a young tech wizard then Steve Bonnici and Brenan Santos from Chiswick Computers offer personal tuition in building computers. The student can take their machine home and, of course, you never know where those skills might lead. ‘A few years ago some parents mentioned that their kids wanted to build their own PCs from scratch,’ explains Steve. ‘We were delighted to help, and we’ve been doing it ever since. We clear a bench in the workshop, explain the process and we’re around to supervise and answer questions. The build takes two hours and we tailor it to the child’s needs, so it’s often a desktop gaming PC.
Tumblr media
‘Afterwards, we loadWindows, update the software, test the computer and then it’s ready to takeaway. The kids really enjoy spending time with us. They learn so much more when they do it themselves, problem-solving as they go, and we’ve had some lovely feedback from parents.’ Steve has been running Chiswick Computers (the company has Which? Trusted Trader status) since 2003, establishing an excellent reputation for expertise and customer service. His technicians are the local experts when it comes to diagnosing and repairing faults with Windows-based PCs and Apple iMac,MacBook, iPad and iPhones. Steve handles the company’s IT support, looking after businesses, home-based one-person bands and families ‘I build a relationship with each customer,’ he says. ‘If I understand what they do and how they do it, then I can design our support to their requirements.’ Chiswick Computers also offers remote monitoring to corporate clients, remote preventative maintenance for domestic users and over-the-counter advice at the shop.‘If we can fix a problem on the spot, we will,’ says Steve.‘We have a no-fix, no-fee guarantee and we explain everything in plain English!’ Read the full article

Co-owner Peter Hughes has forged close links with factories worldwide to ensure the company offers stylish tiles in effects, sizes and materials (polished, stone, cement, concrete, marble, wood, porcelain) to suit all tastes. Should there be a gap in the portfolio, Peter has an extra string to his bow in the shape of Intceram’s own popular Hugo Ceramicas brand. ‘We design the tiles ourselves – it’s a really enjoyable process – using our detailed knowledge of the market,’ he explains.
Tumblr media
Peter Hughes ‘Fashions come and go but, looking ahead, I think the current demand for large-format porcelain floor tiles will continue to grow. We have 1.2 x 1.2 and 2.4 x 1.2 metre sizes and they have been flying out of the door.’ Last year Peter agreed to represent Roca, the prestigious Barcelonabased manufacturer. ‘They approached us, which was very flattering. We supply the collection in exquisite colours and all sizes. Also, our customers are always welcome to visit Roca’s Chelsea gallery, which was designed by Dame Zaha Hadid, to view the tiles in a display environment.’ Whatever the nature and scope of the tiling project – whether it is interior or exterior, decorative or practical – Peter and his Showroom Manager, Manuela Profetto, will advise on products and costs and provide a friendly, informed service that helps customers come to the best decision.

Gymboree Play & Music Chiswick: Learning Through Play
Tumblr media
Aaron Barriscale ‘My daughters LOVE every class we've attended and never want to leave. It's also very convenient that so many classes are offered through the day.’ – A. Moore, a happy parent at Gymboree Play & Music Chiswick A graduate in drama and musical theatre, Aaron Barriscale has been running Gymboree Play & Music at Chiswick Town Hall since July. Aaron had already been teaching the popular classes for a year when the previous franchisee, Emily Wright, decided to sell and asked if he would like to take over. ‘I loved it here, I’m passionate about working with children and I knew the business inside out. So, it was the perfect opportunity. It’s been hard work, but very fulfilling.’
Tumblr media
Established in 1976, Gymboree Play & Music operates in over 40 countries. It was founded by a Californian mother, Joan Barnes, who wanted to be able to play with her children in a safe, age-appropriate environment. ‘Then as now, the key elements of the philosophy are that parents stay and get involved and that children best learn new skills when they’re having fun,’ explains Aaron. ‘We’re lucky to have a wonderful space in the former Council Chamber and we offer a wide range of classes – play and learn, art, music, messy play and sensory baby lab – all for newborns to five year-olds (Monday to Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday mornings). Conceived by experts in early childhood development, each session encourages children to explore and be curious and we have the flexibility to adapt what we do according to age – the youngest baby we’ve had was three weeks old.
Tumblr media
Aaron Barriscale ‘Most importantly, our play and learn set up changes every two weeks. The purpose-built equipment, such as slides, climbers and boxes, incorporates a huge number of configurations. Hence, classes aren’t repetitive and we’re always able to engage and challenge the children. It’s exactly the same with music: we change themes fortnightly, allowing us to explore everything from Caribbean music to Disney!’ Gymboree Play & Music Chiswick works on a Bronze, Silver and Gold membership basis with Gold allowing children to attend unlimited classes (drop-in sessions on Saturdays are offered with no monthly membership required). Aaron is now looking to take Gymboree events, for example custom-themed art, music and birthday parties to nurseries, child-friendly cafes and private homes. ‘Of course, coming to the Town Hall means everyone has fun and we clear up the mess afterwards!

‘As well as learning through play, Gymboree Play & Music Chiswick is the ideal way for children to build creativity, confidence and friendships. It is also invaluable for their parents as they get to know one another and build a support network. Coming to us is like joining an extended family.’ Classes include: Sensory Baby Lab for newborns Play & Learn: apparatus-based classes for mobile children Music: develop a love of music through song, dance and instruments Art: boost imagination and self-expression with hands-on art activities Family Classes: exploring physical and musical activities for multi-age groups of siblings and friends Pre-School: build key skills for life at school

Maths Tutor: Mathnasium of Chiswick - Solving The Maths Problem
Tumblr media
Kristina, Celeste and Capucine Mathnasium provides children with individually tailored teaching that you can count on Emmanuelle Tsoulies was curious when she noticed that Mathnasium had opened on the High Road. It struck a chord with the Grove Park resident because SAT tests were looming for Celeste and Capucine, her 10 year-old non-identical twins. ‘According to their teachers, one of the girls was doing OK in class but lacked confidence in exams and the other was getting behind,’ recalls Emanuelle. ‘We popped in and talked to the Mathnasium team and they explained how their method worked and how it could provide extra support. We thought, why not try it for a month or so and see how it goes?’ The answer was, very well. ‘The teaching was individual and reassuring and the girls enjoyed it – in particular, they were super-excited by the reward system! They both scored an impressive 107 in their SATs and they still go three times a week. Mathnasium has now become part of our family routine. I’d happily recommended it to other parents.’

Kristina Peno Devised by Larry Martinek, an experienced US teacher, Mathnasium has been transforming how children aged 5-16 learn maths for over a decade (there are nearly 1000 centres worldwide). ‘All new students take a customised assessment and that enables us to determine their level of knowledge and devise a personal learning plan,’ explains Kristina Peno, the Manager of the Chiswick centre. ‘Children learn at their own pace, the lessons are oneto- one and they are flexible for the parents – you don’t have to pre-book. We can help with homework and we specialise in preparation for 11+, scholarship and GCSE exams. ‘Of course, all our tutors are maths experts but, most importantly, they are patient, make the learning process fun and create a friendly, positive environment. Also, they are always on hand to check progress and ensure that information is understood and retained.’ Should a little extra encouragement be needed Mathnasium has a reward for achievement policy, with incentives ranging from slime and toys to an iPhone. ‘Of course, getting a phone takes hard work and outstanding results,’ smiles Kristina.’

Hearing Test - Hearing Aid: Hearing Well - Sound Advice
Tumblr media
Paul and Deepak ‘Old-fashioned customer service with no salesmanship. Deepak is a knowledgeable guy with integrity and pride in his work.’ – George Curtis, a patient Hearing aid audiologist Deepak Jagota moved his business in December – and he didn’t travel far. But, while Hearing Well may have only gone five doors down the High Road, there is no comparison in terms of quality and size between the premises. ‘My regulars have come in for appointments and been taken aback – in a positive way! I’ve been able to brand the clinic, I now have a comfortable reception area (Deepak’s charming father, Paul, is in charge of meeting and greeting), four times more space in the testing room and a second room in which I can expand my practice. I’ve been very fortunate.’ Deepak offers a comprehensive range of audiology services, from conducting hearing tests and prescribing hearing aids to micro-suction earwax removal and tinnitus advice. Personal care is at the heart of his approach. ‘I allocate as much time as is necessary to each patient. It’s not a conveyor belt. If someone is a little nervous and needs longer to chat, that’s a pleasure. ‘Equally important, I provide a thorough aftercare package, including a six-monthly “F1 pitstop” to check everything is working well.’ Deepak consistently invests in state-of-the-art testing equipment and, as an independent audiologist, he can choose the most suitable solutions from all the leading manufacturers. ‘If a particular device doesn't prove quite suitable, I can easily recommend an excellent alternative. That flexibility also applies to the cost and cosmetic appearance of the hearing aid.’ In recent years, Deepak has volunteered regularly on audiology charity missions. In 2019, he returned to Armenia, where thousands of people have been treated successfully, for a third visit. ’It's always a wonderful experience. I love what I do. Life is too short to put up with a problem that reduces the joy of connecting with others.’

Metropolitan Safe Deposits: Peace Of Mind
Tumblr media
Christopher Barrow Metropolitan Safe Deposits ensures your most valuable possessions are safe and secure ‘We know who, what, when and where at all times,’ smiles Christopher Barrow, Chief Executive of Metropolitan Safe Deposits. ‘Those are the critical questions in our business. From multi-layered alarm and surveillance systems to tried and tested physical security, we offer clients an affordable, convenient world-class facility.’ Metropolitan Safe Deposits opened its Chiswick office in July following a 10-month build that required 225 tons of reinforced concrete to create space for two basement vaults made by the industry’s leading manufacturer, Robur Safe. At full capacity, the Swedish company will also supply 8000 safe deposit boxes in 12 different sizes: the smallest, which is perfect for storing small keepsakes, rings or watches, costs £95 p.a (including £10,000 insurance). The sophisticated security network begins with 24/7 CCTV of the perimeter and interior, with the exception of the private viewing cubicles in the vaults. ‘The CCTV is also monitored by our Knightsbridge and St John’s Wood offices,’ explains Christopher. ‘The building itself is equipped with seismic and stress detectors and the “secure area” beyond reception is protected by bullet-resistant airlock doors with magnetic and electronic locks. ‘Client access is controlled by computerverified ID and biometric fingerprint procedures and each safe deposit box (up to three people are registered to each) is opened with two unique keys – no other keys exist for that lock. If a box is re-locked, the ID process must be repeated, so ensuring a proper audit trail. Furthermore, we have our own unique security features: every box is individually alarmed and we are alerted if more than a given number are open at one time.’ Metropolitan Safe Deposits' insurers recently commissioned a rigorous review of security and staff training, making no recommendations for improvement. ‘To the best of our knowledge, this type of vault has never been breached,’ says Christopher. ‘If a system is cut off a back-up is always in place. At a time when banks are exiting the safe custody market, it is vital that independent vaults are able to provide a secure, high quality service to customers.’
