Teaching was never Ronan Lynch’s first choice of profession. Or second. Or third. But Aglionby Academy had been desperate for a Latin teacher, and Ronan had a degree in Classics, so the position just kind of fell into his lap four years ago and he hasn’t really looked back.

Which is fine. He doesn’t hate it. He doesn’t love it either, but after four years, it’s become familiar. Then the new school year starts and along with it comes a new Chemistry and Physics teacher: Adam Parrish.

For Ronan, it’s crush at first sight, and it doesn’t take long to figure out the feeling is mutual. Except acting on those feelings is a bit of a problem for Ronan and Adam.

Because Aglionby doesn’t allow dating among its teachers.

“You made it, though. You’re at Aglionby now.”

“That’s one way to look at it.” Adam laughed a little. “Delayed wish fulfillment, I guess. It’s another reason I applied for the job.”

“You’re on the better side of the table anyway,” Ronan told him. “It was a total farce as a student.”

Adam laughed again. “I’m sure it was. For you.” Outside, it had grown just dark enough that the lights dotting the side of the highway turned on, and as the van passed beneath one, it gilded Adam for a moment, putting a glint in his eyes and flashing off his straight, white teeth. Briefly, he looked like one of the Renaissance paintings Declan always tried to get Ronan to admire, a golden halo around Adam’s dusty hair, face momentarily in chiaroscuro or some other fancy Italian art term. Blood hummed in Ronan’s veins long after shadows returned to the van, and after a few more moments of silence, as if he’d been thinking of saying it but needed to build himself up to it, Adam said, “I can’t picture you as a student.”

“There’s yearbooks in the library if your imagination is giving you problems.”

“I know,” Adam replied, and the way he said it made Ronan think he’d already made that trip to the Aglionby library to look at Ronan’s old class photos. Adam confirmed that himself when he said, “To get you in that sweatshirt, I had to threaten the trip. I don’t want to know what Gansey had to do to get you in a uniform. Do you even know how to knot a tie?”
