Today, April 14th, I attended a performance called Faerie at the Alight Dance Theatre in Mount Rainier. This was a performance with dance and lots of really interesting music. The music carried the show in that it indicated the mood of the piece. Often times it was very happy and light hearted but the music changed at one point and got fast a lower in pitch. I could definitely hear a xylophone, piano, and a tambourine throughout it. It was really beautiful and the lighting changes made me think of what we do in my film workshop class.

On Saturday, April 6, I attended “Rip the Floor.” It is a big hip hop dance competition with dance groups from different schools. This performance was in the Clarice. Each dance had its own theme and really awesome costumes to go with it. I had so much fun watching this show and cheering for my friends that were in it.

Today, March 26th, I attended the Student Art Exhibit at the Clarice. It contained art from students from Prince George’s County Public Schools. It was really beautiful seeing how some of these young kids interpret art. This connects to art scholars because these students expressed emotions and thoughts through visual paintings, drawings, and photographs like we often do.

Today I went into Washington’s DC to see a play called Admissions. It was incredible. The theme was very relevant and dealt with issues about race, college, and family matters. Each character was very developed and different. I was so impressed by all the actors and would definitely see it again.

Today I went to a Hip Hop dance class in the Clarice. It was taught by Ama. She is an amazing dancer and teacher and I had so much fun. We started with a warm up to get our body ready to dance. Then we learned a combo with lots of difficult moves. I loved it.

Today I went to the Faculty Dance Concert at the Clarice. It consisted of 4 separate pieces. They were all so beautiful. My favorite was called “Fall to Fall.” The dancers threw leaves all over the stage and it created a really cool effect.

Today I went to the UMD Art Gallery in the Art-Sociology Building for the Scholars scavenger hunt. I found so many beautiful pieces of art. One that I found interesting was actually a video of dirt road in what looked like some kind of desert. I enjoyed visiting this gallery a lot.

On Sunday I went to the Fall MFA thesis concert in the Clarice. It was in the Kogod Theatre and consisted of 2 parts. They were both absolutely beautiful dance/spoken word pieces. The first one even had an aerial act, I loved it!

1.) What did you see/hear/learn that was completely new to you?
This was my first time ever seeing a comedy show live. It surprised me by how funny the acts were. I was laughing the whole time and I had a great time. I didn’t know people had to audition to get in! I want to find out more about it in the future because it was a fun way to spend my time.
2.) What was your favorite performance/experience? Why was it your favorite?
My favorite performance at the festival was the Soul Rebels. They played a variety of instruments and the songs were all upbeat and got the audience moving. The lights were also a big part of the experience because they were fluorescent colors flashing everywhere. The music was amazing and they all had such great stage presence.
3.) How might one or more of the performances/experiences relate to the Arts Scholars theme of Migrations: Populations and Practices on the Move?
The Hip Hip Orchestra was the first thing I saw and I think it relates most to the theme. They were playing concert instruments in a rave setting and it completely worked. This group could have performed on stage in a concert hall or on the street. Either way they sounded amazing and were able to adapt to their surroundings.

We went to see the Hip Hop Orchestra at the NextNow festival. They were incredible, it was about 15 performers playing instruments to upbeat songs. The lights were intense and caught my attention right away. We had a great time here!!

Today we went to Washington DC and visited the Smithsonian American Art Museum. We saw some really interesting art pieces from portraits of presidents to statues of protesters. My favorite piece was a room filled with people made entirely out of paper (as pictured below). It was a great experience and I’m happy I got the opportunity to go.

All of the scholars programs went over to the Clarice for the Scolars Convocation. It started off with a performance by “Faux Paz”, an a cappella group. We heard Benjamin Parks and others speak to us about upcoming events and what it means to be a scholar. This was a great first event for us.
