The Curse of Oak Island centers around the Oak Island mystery. Oak Island, Nova Scotia is said to be filled with treasures hidden underneath the ground, waiting to be discovered. Some say it’s pirate treasure, others say it’s the Ark of the Covenant or the Holy Grail. But one thing we know — people won’t stop looking for something down there, despite an alleged curse. The Curse of Oak Island originated about a century ago, but no one is entirely sure where. The curse says that seven men will die in their quest to unearth whatever the ultimate treasure of Oak Island is. So far, six men have died digging treasure on Oak Island, meaning that, according to legend, there’s only one man left to die until the big treasure is unveiled. What’s everyone looking for? The thing is, no one is entirely sure. There are a number of theories of what is lurking around Oak Island, most of them rather fantastic. Some say that it’s the treasures of Captain Kidd, Blackbeard, or Sir Francis Drake. Others say that the Cathars or Knights Templar’s treasures ended up there. The treasures of historical giants like Marie Antoinette or William Shakespeare might be buried on the island. Other theories include Aztec gold or Freemason artifacts are other theories about what lies hidden beneath Oak Island. I was an early player in the hobby of metal detecting in 1965 when the evolution of metal detecting had already started. We considered it treasure hunting at the time, not so much metal detecting perse, but as a call to adventure, the metal detector itself is just one more tool of many, hi-tech and low-tech, all designed to get us onto the treasure site and into the ground pronto! We referred to ourselves as THer’s (treasure hunters) which has since evolved into the latest popular moniker, detectorist, probably derived from a popular British TV show of the same name. As far as how metal detecting evolved, we need to go back in time, quite a bit farther back than my 56-years in the hobby, deep into the mid-19th century. In the beginning, humanity’s interest in the physical laws of the universe set us on a course that would end in the development of that magic wand we all love, the metal detector!

Purpose: Test the operational capability and sensitivity at depth in soil and wet salt sand as well as its ability to discriminate and separate good targets from iron on land.

Procedure: All tests conducted, observations and comments reported are from the standpoint of the average user and not a professional design engineer. After familiarizing myself with the detector by reading the manual in conjunction with the machine itself, tests were designed to evaluate sensitivity at depth in Soil, Wet Salt Sand (WSS), and its ability to Discriminate and Separate (D/S) good targets from iron on land.
