Misuzu… You're really cute. Huh?! Are ya making fun of me?! You can be prickly sometimes… but easy to read. It's cute. Sh-shut up!! [Easy to read"? What does that mean?!] [When he smiles…he seems entirely different. Huh…? How long has it been since anyone's smiled at me…?]

♂ Took A Trip To An Otome Game | Otoge Ni Trip Shita Ore ♂
Otonari has secretly dreamed of being isekai'd off to the worlds of his favorite bishoujo games... but when he accidentally clicks on an ad for an otome game, the next thing he knows, he wakes up surrounded by beautiful men in another world!
I'm going to be rambling about this series for a while, because wow, it's way more fun and sweet than I was expecting, and I think other people deserve to know about it!
This manga is hilarious. I'll admit, I didn't have the highest hopes when I started it- I was mostly intrigued by the designs of the leads from the in-universe otome, but I've been burned by similar premises before, and even though it was marketed to me as a BL, I wasn't sure whether that was the actual genre or not, as something josei or even seinen can get mislabeled as BL by fans.
But, I was pleasantly surprised right from the get go! The story starts out largely as a parody of otome games, no surprise there, but it never really comes across as making fun of otome games or the people who play them. If anything, it's more making fun of the protagonist for not understanding otome or its appeal, while punishing him for trying to cheat his way into the hearts of the guys around him.
See, Otonari quickly finds that everyone in this world seems to see him as a woman, the heroine of the story- only for it to be revealed that that's not actually the case. Because unlike most of these stories, the characters within the game are ALSO aware that this is just a game. While their world is real to them and their backstories and everything are genuine to who they are, they're also aware that they're playing roles in a story, and they take that very seriously!
It isn't until it becomes clear that Otonari didn't willingly come here that the guys reveal that they aren't exactly thrilled with this situation either- they were expecting a cute girl, not a loud mouthed guy who clearly doesn't respect the genre. They're professionals! They were willing to treat Otonari as the heroine under the pretense that he was playing this game willingly, and it's only after he repeatedly gets grossed out by the fact that these men are hitting on him that they drop the professionalism and call him out. They're not any happier than he is, but if he's not going to play along, then why should they?
It's then revealed that if Otonari wants to return to his world, he has to get a specific ending- he must reach the end of the game while maintaining a middling affection score with all of the game's capture targets. Unfortunately, he's already gone and stuck his foot in his mouth with the first three, which means winning them over is going to be an uphill battle.
This was definitely a refreshing approach to the Video Game Isekai plot for me. While I think the initial 'ew I don't want to be flirty with other men' stuff has the potential to be offputting for some people, I personally found the way it was framed to be pretty comedic, especially since it lays the groundwork for Otonari's developing relationships with the male leads to be more genuine.
As the story progresses, Otonari's relationships with the guys slowly grow, from them tolerating him as the heroine, to him showing his more earnest and endearing sides, which slowly win them over. He genuinely finds the young ninja to be cool, helping his self esteem. He brings out the bishonen's more nasty side, meaning that as they develop more of a friendship, it's under the context of having seen his worst side and still caring about him. He amuses the mysterious eye-patch wearing ikemen with his refusal to stick to the script as a heroine, slowly winning him over.
And that's not even bringing up the possessive yandere capture target he comes across later into the story- their dynamic is incredibly sweet, as Otonari initially rejects him under the assumption that he is just pretending to be attracted to him like the others were at the beginning, only for it to be revealed that he doesn't care about the game elements like the others- the heroine is the heroine, regardless of gender, and his attachment to Otonari is genuine. And that's really where the BL elements start coming in.
From that point on, Otonari kind of stops caring about bringing up his affection with the others, in that he's no longer trying any underhanded tactics or disingenuous attempts at winning them over- he's just being himself, and getting to know the others, allowing their relationships to progress naturally, into genuine friendships and bonds.
Because there's a second series, it's not really a spoiler that Otonari doesn't make it home by the end of the first part. There's 11 capture targets he has to win over, and he only meets 4 in the first series, so obviously he wasn't going to be getting the ending he needed. But by the time the second series rolls around, we're in a place that I just love.
Otonari has completely embraced his role as heroine, proudly calling himself one. He's no longer creeped out by the idea of winning over the capture targets, treating them like actual people he needs to get to know and befriend, rather than weird guys he needs to trick into liking him. He's determined to get the best ending- not just so he can go home, but because he wants the end that is best for everyone, so they'll be happy. His character development over the course of the first series was subtle, but it's obvious at this point how much he's come around and grown, and it's so nice seeing him having gone from grossed out and trying to cheat the system to embracing it and genuinely caring about his new friends.
And! The second series actually starts heading into genuine BL territory, with one of the characters explicitly realizing he has a crush on Otonari and getting jealous of the other guys, who also seems to be developing feelings for him.
I wholeheartedly recommend this manga. It's funny, it's cute, it has awesome character designs, and some wonderful dynamics and character development that takes time to hit, without reaching the point of exasperation. The second series hasn't been fully translated yet, sadly, but it is in progress and has been updated recently, so it's still an ongoing project. But if any of this sounded fun, please check it out! It's definitely worth a read!
