During my sophomore year at ACU, my roommate, Jon Gbor - an incredibly kind and brilliant Nigerian friend - told me this: “You will never understand the racism I see because you’re white.” I thought he was wrong. Of course I can! I’m aware! He said, “Have you ever been frisked?” I had no answer. Of course, I hadn’t. When we were driving back home to Bloomington, we were pulled over. Jonathan was driving. He was asked out of the car and frisked. Neither of the two additional white passengers were. I was one of them. I will never forget his face as he stared at me. When he got back in the car, I tried to apologize. He said, “Just don’t man.” We sat in silence for quite a while. I can’t understand - and there aren’t enough sorrys to make up for what so many of my friends have been through. Black, Hispanic, Asian, mixed... people of color. People first. We are all created equal. I’m sorry the way you’ve been treated. Jon was right. I don’t understand. “Well done good and faithful servant” I took this picture about 5 years ago with Bob. He passed away on February 18th, 2018. Bob was an interestingly significant figure in my life. He became a friend when Chris Troxel and I approached him one day in Jim Mankins Bible class in 1993. He looked alone. Bob was alone... A lot... but the students at ACU during my years there really changed his life. We spoke about it over the phone a few times a year after this photo was taken. How there were so many “Kools” that he could go to dinner with... hang out with. So many of you made his life better. We spent a lot of time together during my years there as a student and as a staff member. Bob didn’t always say the right thing or do the right thing - none of us ever really do - and that stood out with my friend because he was a little eccentric and had some handicaps that made relationships difficult. But his heart was as big as all Texas and he loved people deeply. I can say this - Bob - you made my life better. Always happy to see me... always in pursuit of time with your friend. Now you’re surrounded by a great cloud of Kools who are genuinely happy to see you. God bless you Bob. You blessed me.

It's amazing what one year will bring. The highs - the unexpected lows - the triumphs - the losses. People that were your every day now no longer... Old friends reintroducing themselves becoming closer that ever. New friends who are so close they feel like old friends. Album finally recorded. From camper to boss trainer. Mom of 4 sees her first off to college....oh and how about a flood of epic devastation all around us. If I had to venture a guess - this year has been probably your most eventful, most stressful, most rewarding and most costly year of your life.... but one thing has stayed the same. Worshiping God together has grown sweeter every day... not just singing but responding to the One we both love... responding in life and in music, as husband and wife, mom and dad, co-leaders, workout partners... Thank you for spending this year with me. You're amazing Vivi. Happy Birthday. I love you :)
