After months of hard work and overcoming countless challenges, today marks a significant milestone for our capstone project—the final submission to Engr. Carl Suasola. It’s been a rollercoaster ride, filled with moments of frustration and determination, but it all led us to this day.
Our initial output was submitted on December 17, 2024, but we soon realized that there were still gaps in our documentation and lingering bugs in our app. Thankfully, our instructor, Engr. Suasola, demonstrated his generosity and understanding, granting us an extension until today to polish our work.
We didn’t take this extension lightly. Every moment was spent revising, debugging, and perfecting both our app and the accompanying papers. The effort paid off, and at last, Engr. Suasola gave his approval for our project. It was a moment of relief and pride—a testament to the teamwork and persistence we’ve put into this endeavor.
With this chapter closed, we’re ready to take the next step: Technopreneurship next semester. As a group, we’re excited to transform our project into something even more impactful, armed with the lessons we’ve learned along the way.

The day marked our last face-to-face meeting for the semester, filled with both challenges and accomplishments. It began with Quiz 2, which covered Topic 8: Data Mining and Topic 9: Data Visualization—both critical areas in our studies. The quiz was a test of how much we had absorbed and understood, pushing us to apply our knowledge under time pressure.
After the quiz, Engr. Carl Suasola, our instructor, shared valuable insights about the upcoming exam. He provided us with a clear understanding of the setup and expectations, ensuring we were well-prepared. He also took the time to explain what he wanted to see in our Project Implementation and Testing (PIT)—a crucial part of our capstone work.

The day didn’t end there. We headed to the CPE office for a consultation with Engr. Suasola about our capstone project. It was a pivotal moment as we presented our user manual and a demo video of the project. His feedback was invaluable, guiding us to refine our work and ensuring we were on the right track.
As the semester draws to a close, days like this remind us of the journey we’ve undertaken—not just in academics but also in honing our skills and working towards becoming competent engineers.

On this day, we began the day with a quiz covering Topic 6 - Software Reliability and Quality Management and Topic 7 - API. These topics challenged us to think critically about building robust software systems and leveraging APIs effectively to enhance functionality and integration.
After the quiz, we transitioned to our next lecture: Topic 8 - Data Mining. The session introduced us to the fundamentals of extracting valuable insights from large datasets, an essential skill in today's data-driven world.
After the lecture, we had a seatwork group activity where we applied what we learned about data mining. Collaborating with our peers allowed us to experiment with real-world applications of data mining concepts, making the learning experience more engaging and hands-on.
It was a productive session that strengthened our understanding of these key topics and gave us a chance to apply our knowledge practically!

We tackled API (Topic 7), we began with a seatwork to assess our initial grasp of the topic. Sir Carl followed with a discussion about APIs, covering (1) What is an API, (2) Why is it important, (3) How does it work, (4) Types of APIs, and (5) Examples of API. To cap off the session, we engaged in a short group activity to practice implementing APIs in real-world scenarios. I also found out that, Computer engineering students need to learn APIs too. Reasons are to build interconnected systems, save development time with reusable tools, and gain essential skills for real-world software development. Our instructor, Engr Carl also mentioned us to study ahead for the upcoming quiz next meeting. That's all for now!

I wasn't able to attend the face-to-face lecture, due to personal matter. But, I spent time working on our SDE project instead. I did confirmed that sir Carl discussed Topic 6 - Software Reliability and Quality Management on that day. I might need to check on that later too, because we will be having quiz on November 28. For our project: As a developer on the team, I worked on improving the error-handling mechanisms within our project. I also optimized how our application sends data to Firebase Realtime Database, ensuring smoother and more efficient data transactions.

Week 6: September 19, 2024
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On September 19, our lecture focused on Lesson 3, where we delved into various software testing techniques and strategies. This session was highly anticipated, as we explored important aspects of software development like:
Software Testing: Understanding the significance of testing and its role in the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
Testing Techniques: Specifically, we examined three types of testing:
Black Box Testing: This technique treats the software as a "black box" without any knowledge of the internal workings. The focus is solely on input and output.
White Box Testing: Here, the internal structure, design, and code of the software are considered to ensure the logic is working as expected.
Regression Testing: This ensures that new code changes don’t break existing functionality, keeping the software stable.
Test Automation: We discussed how automated tools can speed up the testing process and ensure continuous integration.
Quality Assurance Practices: QA practices were emphasized as key to maintaining the software's standard and reliability.
User Acceptance Testing (UAT): We explored John Brooke’s method and learned about the System Usability Scale (SUS) for gathering user feedback on software usability.
After the lecture, Engr. Carl provided us with hands-on group activities to apply our learning. This was a fantastic way to solidify the concepts we had just learned. We had:
Identifying Errors in User Interface: This task required us to analyze an interface and detect possible usability issues or errors. We applied the principles of Black Box and White Box testing here, thinking both from the user's perspective and by examining the underlying code.
User Acceptance Testing Using John Brooke's Method: For this task, we used the System Usability Scale to evaluate test data and determine user acceptance. The provided test data passed the acceptance criteria of the three sample users we were given.
After the class, I then went to the CPE office and had my quiz

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today, our group met with our instructor, Engineer Carl Suasola, for a consultation. We presented both Activity 1 and the front-end development of our capstone project.
We are deeply grateful for our instructor’s guidance in helping us revise and improve Activity 1, despite of being late. After that, he shared insights, like tools for our capstone project, that can accelerate our workflow's progress.
The day didn’t end there. Once I got home, I completed Quiz 1, Part 1, on the USTEP website.

We had our discussion of Software Engineer's principles, patterns, implementation, integration as well as the deployment. These topics further gave us idea on handling real-life situation circumstances.
After the discussion, our instructor sir Carl group us into 4 and gave us different scenarios. This will challenge us our ability to apply the learnings discussed and how collaborative we are in a team.
Our scenario was to design a restaurant reservation system, where we need to highlights its UI, Pseudocode, and Design Patterns Used. After that, we are task to exchange ideas to other groups and give criticism with each other on (1) What works? (2) What doesn't work? and (3) Improvement/s.

Week 3: August 29, 2024
Tumblr media
On this day, we are tasked to consult our project's progress and submit our activity 1. We faced some challenges, which caused us not to have our consultation with sir Carl. As the developer, the challenges I encountered are: (1) Setting the expo project whether if it's typescript-based or blank JavaScript project. After all the research, I chose the typescript approach, for seamless expo user experienced. (2) Figuring out on how to download the components I made in our Figma design. I am very familiar with Adobe XD, that's why creating our UI/UX in Figma was so easy for me. But, one thing I find it hard was to download the components in one go. In Figma, you have to download it individually, unlike Adobe XD, it will download the components in one go and just put the downloaded assets to your code environment. So, what happened is it consumed me a lot of time just to find out how I download the assets file in Figma. This was also the day I started coding the About Us screen, Login screen, and Sign Up screen.

August 15, 2024 | First face-to-face class | SDE
Marked our first face-to-face class, and it was an insightful start to the semester. Sir Carl introduced us to the subject, Software Design and Engineering (SDE). He walked us through the course policies, grading system, and the rules we'll need to follow in both the class and the lab. It was a lot of information, but it set a clear direction for what to expect moving forward.
Sir Carl also shared his contact number and let us know his available consultation times during the week. It’s nice to know we have that support as we dive deeper into the subject. I'm looking forward to what the rest of the semester will bring!

August 19, 2024 | SDE
Today, I spent time polishing my knowledge (ExpoGo, Android Studio, React Native), focusing on refining the basics and getting more comfortable with the React Native framework. I also started to setup the workspace for our project, the "Digitized Log Book System for Small-scale Market Owners." VSCode will be our main coding environment, and I’ve started to configure it to suit our needs. Earlier, I also went through the asynchronous lessons shared by Sir Carl via Google Drive. It is about Software Engineering's codes and ethics, definition, tools, and SDLC. Every day brings new challenges, but also new learning opportunities. I’m eager to keep pushing forward!
