Chapter 13 Fieldwork: Who Are Today's Migrants?
I interviewed my best friend who immigrated here when she was about 5 years old. My best friend is a female, she’s 21, she is Caribbean and she immigrated from Saint Kitts and Nevis. She didn’t immigrate by herself, her parents and immidate family did and her only being 5 she had no choice but to move with them. She told me she loved it in Saint Kitts and if it was up to her she wouldn’t have come to America but her father wanted better for his kids. She told me it was hard trying to learn English throughout elementary school and she wasn’t able to fully speak the language till she was about 9 years old, she got teased for it but she didn’t really pay it any attention because she was smart and what we was learning in elementary she had already learned before she came to America. Her father eventually started his own business in America doing construction and renovations but it was hard for him to do that because he barely speaks English. Being an immigrant she had to get her Green Card or Visa and it has to be renewed every couple of years in order to keep your citizenship in America. She said life in Saint Kitts wasn’t hard but America does has better opportunities but if the opportunity for her to move back to Saint Kitts came she said she wouldn’t take it but she would rather just visit from time to time.

Chapter 11 Fieldwork: The Biography of a Chocolate Bar
1. What are the ingredients? (Perhaps start with cocoa, the primary ingredient)
Milk chocolate (Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Chocolate, Nonfat Milk, Milk Fat, Lactose, Soy Lecithin, PGPR, Emulsifier) Peanuts, Sugar, Dextrose, Salt, TBHQ (Preservatives)
2. Where do the ingredients come from?
Reese’s get their peanuts from Southern America starting in Virginia extending down to Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Texas, and New Mexico. Reese’s get their Milk Fat and Nonfat Milk from a dairy farm in New Zealand, milk fat is also referred to as butter fat. Reese’s gets their Cocoa Butter from a supplier in Wayne, PA but it is a natural occurring vegetable fat extracted from cocoa beans. Reese’s use sugar beets as a way of getting their sugar. Reese’s get their cocoa beans from West African regions.
3. How are the ingredients produced?
All the ingredients are sent to the Hershey factory in Hershey, PA and that is where they are produced.
4. What are the living conditions for people who produce the cocoa?
Hershey who is the distributor of Reese’s use a program CocoaLink and Cocoa Co-op to make the labor work less intensive and be able to share their farming and health tactics but the farmers make about $1,400 - $2,200 a year depending on how many works their are on site only making .50¢ - .86¢ a day but this isn’t based on what Hershey is paying their Cocoa Farmers because I could not find that information for this specific compan.
5. How do the producers get cocoa to the market?
With Reese’s producers use low cost technology and low cost shipping to distribute the ingredients to the market .
6. How are the prices set?
Pricers are set based upon consumer demand, production cost, packaging, grams in container, cup count, and depending on the seller.

I brought my chocolate bar from Exxon.
11. How much profit does a store owner make on one chocolate bar?
they make about 25%-50% of the profit .
12. Yes, their are absolutely hidden cost because the money you pay for that chocolate bar does not just go to the distributor, they have to pay everyone underneath them and still make a profit. that’s why prices vary by location.

Chapter 7 Fieldwork: Cartoon Commercials & the Construction of Gender
I watched the show “Chuggington” and while watching it, the commercials that came up were four unisex commercials two were ran by disney appealing to both genders about other disney channel shows they should watch, one commercial was about kinetic sand appealing to kids using different colors and the quality that it never dries up, and the last commercial was about halloween costumes for girls and boys. Then there were a total of two commercials aimed towards boys, they were about toy trucks, and action figures. Then there were 3 commercials towards girls, one was a barbie doll commercial using the color pink to appeal and voice overs to appeal to girls, a stuffed animal commercial that supposed to help girls sleep at night, and a cover set that had many “feminine” colors. In commercials they use voice overs, music, colors, and kids reactions to appeal to the children in order for them to like whatever the commercial is trying to pitch & from what i’ve seen it’s natural that boys will be boys and girls will be girls.

Chapter 6 Fieldwork: What is the Relationship of Ethnicity to the Nation?
I talked to my grandmothers on both sides of my family. My mother’s side of the family is African American and Irish, my father’s side of the family is African American and Cherokee Indian. They didn’t say how long they’ve been in America for but it’s been a really long time. On my mother’s side my great great grandfather was a Irish potato farmer and that’s how he made a living and on my father’s side of the family they were always played sports and athletically rounded. My family isn’t really heavy on the embracement of their heritage but they are very proud of where they came from.

Chapter 5 Fieldwork: Example of How Is Race Constructed Around The World
- Institustional Racism
Tumblr media
I think the Nazi group is a good example for Institutional Racism because they were racist and prejudice. They thought Jews shouldn’t be German Citizens, immigration should be stopped, and if you don’t have blonde hair and blue eyes. They also fed citizens false dreams and were supports of communist.
- Microaggression
Tumblr media
Adolf Hitler showed microaggressions towards other races, religious views, and people who didn’t have things that were a norm to him and the standard way a human should look. Hitler also, is the one who initiated World War II in Europe because he invaded Poland because of his own personal aggression.
- White Supremacy
Tumblr media
White Supremacy used to mainly deal with the Ku Klux Klan, David Duke, and the Neo-Nazi politician from Louisiana but now it deals with a array of catoergries like banks policies, admissions decisions, and police departments enforcement policies.
- Race
Tumblr media
Race at this point and time in society is a very sensitive subject because of the couple deaths due to police brutality and their abuse of power, mainly on black people. People think of because one race has this, the one race is better, where in reality all races are supposed to be equal.
- Racism
Me and my friends have dealt with racism first-hand, the first incident was this white guy threatened us and called us the N word because we were walking by, when go to fancy restaurants where it’s mainly upper class individuals who are predominantly white, they usually make certain faces at us and the servers will act a different way towards us, where as they’ll treat a table full of white people and fair-skin individuals completely different. Also when we be walking around Downtown white women tend to grab their purse when we are just passing by.
- Colonialisms
Tumblr media
Periodisation, this is the wave of European colonialism. The three main countires were Portugal, Spain, and the early Ottoman Empire also known as the Turkish Empire. Portuguese started with the conquest of Ceuta, Morocco, and then lead to the discovery of other African terriorties. The Ottoman’s conquered South Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and much of Northern and Eastern Africa.

Chapter 4 Fieldwork: Language and Gender in a Virtual Classroom
1. The class meeting I chose was my ARCH 205 class. There is a total of 47 students in the class, 23 of those students are female, 24 of those students are male including myself, 1 female professor, 1 male co-instructor, and 1 male teacher assistant. Overall, it seemed that the males spoke more often than the females verbally but in the comments the females spoke more than the males.
2. The average amount of time someone spoke was 9 seconds using about 12 words on average, the discussion including questions, explanations, and relatable experiences.
3. When males spoke they tend to speak with an unsure tone or an aggressive and/or assertive tone but not coming off disrespectful, most of the cameras were off but most males would be very attentive or look confused; meanwhile, females would talk more calmly with some uncertainty but have an understanding of the point they are trying to get across, most females who’s cameras were on, were attentive but some would be on their phone.
4. Females tend to keep their cameras on more.
5. The instructor is a females and she’s very straight forward and knows how to explain in detail and when she talks, you can tell she's very passionate about her teachings.
6. I personally feel like teacher gender does sometimes have an influence on the class but I think it’s more so the teachers personally and approachability.

Chapter 1 Fieldwork: “Making a Can of Coke Unfamiliar”
Tumblr media
The item of my choice is “Johnson’s Head-to-Toe Baby Lotion” Johnson’s baby lotion was first invented in 1942 and was first sold in 1944 and used to be called the “Pink Brand”. The lotion was manufactured in Skillman, New Jersey and their headquarters are in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The impact Johnson’s Lotion has on my life is it helps seal moisture into my skin, keeping it extremely soft and smooth, especially for my hands because they get really dry almost 3-4 times a day and I have to constantly keep lotion on them and helps keep my hands moisturized for hours. The lifestyle of Johnson & Johnsons workers is they love the work environment and Johnson’s is always giving them opportunities to be involved, the lowest pay rate are the office assistants who make $12 a hour starting and the highest amount you are able to be paid is $50 a hour, as a senior sourcing associate and people who work for Johnsons & Johnsons live good lifestyles.
