It seems like the older I get, the more irrationally angry casual censorship makes me. And it isn't just the "unalive" "grape" alleged filter-dodging vernacular, but the way normal words will be peppered with asterisks, or screenshots will have words like "gay" "hell" "fuck" etc either partially or entirely blurred. Who is this helping? What is the purpose of it, except to reinforce shame and elevate a flimsy perception of purity and safety, however those things manifest. It's so tiresome and I'm sick of it.

Canon Sam and Dean are platonic life partners. They live together, work together, fight together, and roam the backroads of America together. They have walked away from all other relationships including romantic relationships for each other. They killed for each other and died for each other and are fully prepared to let the world burn for each other. They are each other's main priority always and anywhere.

That kind of intensity is usually considered the prerogative of romantic relationships, so that's why wincest shippers say that only the sex is missing.

Most wincest fics do not need to change the canon relationship they have with each other to make a riveting tale, except for adding sex. Non-shipping Sam and Dean fics give the same vibes as the shipping fics, and it's only after finishing them you realize "hey there was no sex". I think you are missing a lot about Wincest. It's been around since season 1 (2005), the founder of AO3 is a shipper and her fics are still up, and there's tons of meta, fics, art, andshippers out there on a variety of things. If Wincest is a lot of sex, it's because it IS incest after all. There's a lot you can do with taboo. But it's also because the show itself feeds into the ship so the only thing missing from the relationship is sex.

Sam and Dean constantly choose each other over everyone, even the world. They're canonically soulmates. In an interview with Eric Kripke (creator of Supernatural) the executive producer called the show "The epic love story of Sam and Dean." At NYCC 2022 Jensen said "It (Supernatural) was the love story of two brothers, to be honest." They're named after their married maternal grandparents, they get likened to a couple every season. Basically, canon feeds us a lot of the things people look for in their favorite ships. The show means it platonically (like a lot of slash ships are meant to be platonic in canon) but we're so well fed that we don't have to change canon. We get our fill from that.

Sex is the only thing missing from the relationship we're given. You can even test this by checking out fics written during seasons where the brothers are largely separated or fighting (like season 8) where you get a lot of non-PWPs because for once we're not being fed what we're used to.

I love Wincest for their relationship. I love that the show ended up with them pressing their foreheads together as Dean told Sam he loved him so much. I love that Dean chose to drive around heaven until Sam showed up. I love that Jensen said it was best that Dean was the one to die because if it had been Sam, Dean wouldn't have been able to live without him. I'm a shipper because how could you NOT ship them you know? Imagine everything in Supernatural is the same except Sam and Dean aren't related. Do you see the vision? That's exactly the same for Wincest shippers, except them being fictional means we don't see a barrier to shipping them.

That's makes a lot of sense, especially from the last inbox that I responded to (and yes, a few instances I saw) where people think Sam and Dean are together. Perhaps, the casual-ness of assuming they are together is what makes the ship more viable. I can understand that.

Are you saying that even though the show means it platonically, the show simultaneously provides you with all of the content for you to believe it be otherwise? Can you clarify this? Either way it sounds like an interesting point.

So what you're saying is writing wincest or the prior/later fics about them are something that have somewhat (at least) followed the way the brothers have been acting with each other throughout the show, right? Like the works that have been posted are like natural reactions to the current state of their relationship with each other?

Absolutely. Except that's where I feel like deviate and I think that's where my criticism for the ship comes in. Let me be clear that I totally understand everything that you've talked about so far BUT. I think just the fact that they are brothers. No matter how you look at it. The show is built on them being brothers who take on this supernatural world and whatnot so a lot of things they do are just... as brothers. I thought a lot about this ship earlier and I felt like wincest exploits the trauma that they underwent so that people can insert their fantasies (again I am not attacking you, but merely stating what my viewpoint is. no accusations pls!).

To expand on this, a few months ago I had watched and read about the story of the Menendez Brothers. Let me be totally clear that I understand many circumstances are ENTIRELY different, but what I found concerning was that people were writing smutty fics about the brothers because they had developed a very unhealthy codependence on each others -- (Lyle also sexually assaulted his younger brother Erik when they both were young because he didn't really know what was going on) -- which was exploited so that people could insert their smutty fantasies about the brothers. The show that Ryan Murphy made also indulged in this hypothetical scenario that the brothers were sexually satisfying each other which was pretty disgusting.

Again Dean and Sam were emotionally abused more-so than physical so I totally understand the difference, but the main point I'm trying to get across is how their trauma-bond is being (IMO) exploited. It's a vulnerability that seems strange to tap into to write fanfiction.

This absolutely makes sense. That's what lets pretty much anyone and everyone write the most ridiculous and insane stuff ever and get away with it because there are no barriers. This applies to everything, wincest included. So from an objective sense, hell yeah you can write whatever you want.

This was an interesting conversation. I want to thank whoever initially send me a message (and was pissed) and whoever this inbox writer was (if it was someone else) because I appreciated getting to know more about how Sam and Dean's relationship is honestly fucked and how it's the reaction to that which has led to Wincest. With that being said, I still don't support it but I don't think I look at it with such a harsh set of eyes because it's not just people taking two brothers and making them kiss, but there's a genuine screwed "erotic" connection between how they depend on each other.

There is substance to support they have the wrong dependence on each other and I find that psychologically stimulating. However, the fanfiction aspect of it is a bit difficult for me to digest and I don't think I ever will. But I can understand the ship better.

And writer, as you said, you ship Wincest so I'm just going to let you do that. I don't have as much judgement and I think I learned some new stuff from this conversation. Thank you for being so open to telling me all of this information. This doesn't have to be the end! I asked some questions above so just drop another inbox if you want to respond and I'm happy to keep this conversation going.
