Reviewing various Dofus-related merch without buying the merch in question [PART 2]
Part 1 of this post was about activity books for kids. This part is even more useless, though. It is me rating random vaguely "related to dofus" merch. Mostly just for my own amusement.
I rate this paper creature 9/10 only because the spots are not accurate. The eyes look the same.
I rate this for 10/12. on one hand this is a good poster, on other hand, they put a watermark over it, so I cannot illegally print it out myself. Oh well.
Very beautifil. boutful. buouteful. beauttuful. yeas. 10/10
I don't really care about this.not just because this is unbuyable and a limited time product that's been sold out for ages. no.
The reason I bring this here is that, YET AGAIN, japanese motifs are used next to ecaflips——
Their bigass eyes are inspiring me to feel agressive, and not in a good way. These plushes look very throwable, if it were not for their price.

Yet, I'm afraid that if I owned them, I would fantasise of cruelty.
Reviewing various Dofus-related merch without buying the merch in question [PART 1]
This post will not go into details on the Dofus novels, which were already discussed, and most of which are not buyable on the Ankama website, or available digitally anywhere on the internet (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SCAN OR PHOTOGRAPH THEM AND SEND THEM TO ME I PROMISE TO BE NORMAL AND——)
But it will go into another type of book (that I would like to solicit the scans/HD photos of, from you, dear followers) today: The Dofus Activity books for kids (which are, weirdly, easier to get, considering all of them are on the Ankama store? Weird.)
Just like in the case with the Dofus novels, all info here will be both useless and redundant, as well as mostly taken from Otakia.
Ton Aventure à Dessiner
It's a book you draw in. Otakia has only 2 scanned images, used for review purposes, and I decided to try my hand at this one, because I have trouble drawing Kerubim:
Here is my result:
I actually find the way this book explains his head pretty helpful!
Ton Livre de Stickers
It's a sticker book. It sure is stickery, however, the interesting part is that googling it revealed several more sticker books, which don't seem to be available on Ankama's site:
We live in a society.
Le Donjon Maudit - L'album dont tu es le héros
According to Otakia, and I quote, "Within the story of this book Kerubim, Simone and Joris are trapped in a magical dungeon by going to the Festival of Trools and Legends. If they fail to disarm the traps and find the treasure, they will spend the rest of their lives in this sinister place. Despite the danger, Joris is enthusiastic and sees the opportunity to prove to his Papycha that he is also a true catventurer."
Images of what the book is like, also taken from Otakia + machine translations of what is said in these pages:
The reader solves puzzles in a choose-your-own-adventure style, and the whole book is structured kinda like an episode. Can you feel the pain I feel knowing I'll never read any of these goddamn books?? 😭 i guess you win some you lose some. this is my cosmic punishment for owning five gravity falls books.
Ton Livre d'activités
This is kind of like the last book, but without the plot or the cool choose your own adventure thing.
Also there's this activity book, but ngl, I can't find any screenshots/scans of its pages in reviews, so rip bozo.
ADDENDUM: Trying to understand the Aux Tresors novels without actually reading the novels in question(?).
While I am still not in the possession of any pfs, scans, or screenshots of the Aux Tresors novels, a certain movie's book adaptation by the same author who wrote the Aux Tresors novels has, recently and miraculously, come into my digital possession after some investigation. (despite all the e-begging I do, the only way I have been able to find anything is research of insanely obscure piracy sites. No sugardaddies for poor old Ronik, yet...)
Self-evidently, I will be attempting an illegal and unsolicited translation of it into at the very least broken english, the second I have the free time to actually commit to that — but do understand it is a literal novel, and I did not have the willpower to translate my own lore videos into russian. (Considering the uni... even my futile attempts to do that will not be happening soon. LOL.)
Either way, when I have the time to get around to that, I will be liveblogging it as I attempt to translate it. (I mean... it would be a shame if I had to google translate it for liveblogging purposes, and then DIDN'T save those translations for other people to use.)
This has been your mental illness announcement of the day.
(Edit: second part here)
About two years ago i’ve done this designs sketches for the upcoming DOFUS movie (which gonna be awesome if you believe me), but unfortunately this characters-the gods of the world of twelve”-are no longer in the movie… but that granted me the opportunity to share this with you !
More designs intended for the upcoming DOFUS movie by Ankama, before the characters where removed from the story (for those of you who wonders, there is no Ecaflip as it was supposed to be the same design as in the “Kerub’s bazaar” series) and an image board as a bonus (i’ve done many others but i can’t show them at this time…)
And one final post on my concepts for the DOFUS movie, this time on the “Brakmar Butcheress”, Julith, very different from the final version by Xavier Houssin (i guess more subtle than mine, probably too much basic “evil” )
Quelques images-boards et recherches preparatoires sur les personnages principaux du film DOFUS, les designs définitifs étant ensuite réalisés par Xavier Houssin, le chara-designer originel de l’univers Dofus/Wakfu.
some of the early concepts and image-boards i did for the DOFUS movie, final designs being created by Xavier Houssin, original chara-designer of the whole Dofus/Wakfu universe.
La bande annonce du film ! (watch the trailer!)
vous pouvez aussi voir mes recherches sur les Dieux, avant que la scène ne soit supprimée du scénario ^^’ (you can check my early concepts on the Gods, before the scene were cut off the script…)
Here is a selection of research made back in 2010 where I had the opportunity to work as a Visual development artist for Ankama’s first Feature film “ Dofus Book 1, Julith “. The movie is now released in French Theaters. It was great working on this project right after graduating from Gobelins, learned a lot from the Directors Anthony Roux and Jean-Jacques Denis. Si vous êtes en France, je vous encourage vraiment à aller voir le film et supporter une production 100% Française.
Talking about movie-related events - The Lille Christmas Event
One event that I wanted to talk about, is the christmas celebration that took place in Lille and included, of all things, a real life Luis replica. It happened in 2015, and was in part a promotional event for the movie.
There isn't much to talk about, it would be remiss of me not to post about it.
There is official art;
And a making-of video that was very hard to rip from the france3 website and required being re-rendered due to being only rippable in a, and I shit you not, "application/octet-stream" file format.
(you can see it with fixed audio here)
Here is a collection of photos I found relating to the event:
Also, and this isn't related to this event, but I will never mention it if I don't mention it now:
2015-2016 "Christmas game event" red Joris be upon ye.
INTRO TO: A collection of random concept art, official art, and other relevant images.
I am happy to announce that now, having finished with the movie, the series, and the history surrounding them, I can begin my tag where I will be collecting various concept art.
This post will not contain any of it, because it is simply an announcement not to be surprised if I reblog any concept art that was posted to Tumblr, instead of just reposting it.
Also "relevant images" is for uhh. things like "random site art", banners, etc. But mostly it will be concept art and rendered images.
Dofus: The Production - what is left of the old movie
Originally, the movie was supposed to tie in with the game and the Welsh & Shedar series, and be a trilogy.
As we had already explored on this blog, this did not happen for a variety of reasons.
Welsh and Shedar got cannibalized by other projects due to its cancellation, and the script of the movie "Dofus Book 1: Joris Jurgen" had to be completely rewritten from its old plot;
In that movie, Joris was likely supposed to be a street urchin, who survived together with Lilotte, who was a rogue, and the trailer we have for the older version of the movie reflects that:
As we can also see from the trailer, and the poster featured earlier, proto-Kerubim is also a part of the movie, and Khan was not yet meant to be a boufbowler.
(And considering the posters, the cat that inspired Kerubim's design was also a part of the movie. I wonder if it's related to Welsh's cat from Welsh and Shedar? But maybe I'm just crazy.)
Subsequently, the movie came out at a much later date than planned originally.
(two images included because, bizarrely, there are two versions - one with Joris's tail censored, and the other with his tail uncensored. This proves that already at this point they had a draconic backstory in mind for him, though we do know that at the time of Wakfu season 1 (and, likely, the cancelled DS game, as was noted in my post about it) it was not the case.)
Also, interestingly, it is the only art of this time to include the tail. A possible error on Xa's part, or something that was considered very briefly?
In the end, Kerubim (as well as Simone) swallowed up not just the design of Welsh's cat, clothes, and Ecaflip friend;
He also got the role Julith was supposed to have, both metaphorically, and also literally.
Or not entirely — considering the fact that Joris was supposed to spend time with him anyway, since we have art of Joris on his mount from that old draft.
It's quite interesting, to think of all that could have been different in the 2009-2012 version of the movie!
But even during the making of the second draft of the movie, a lot of things have changed. From the first idea of Joris winning Kerubim back at a pachinko machine, to the concept art of Joris's non-possessed appearance.
The movie was being actively rewritten at the time of the making of Aux Tresors, so some of the early drafts were already tied in with its canon — taking place in Astrub, to be specific — but not with its ending, because the show was still ongoing.
At one point there was supposed to be a whole cast of Huppermage characters, and judging from the fact one of them is mentioned in the following text, they did play some sort of role in the plot:
It is likely that from this early draft it was decided that Joris would be a boufbowl fan, which was then worked in as a plot point in Aux Tresors.
(Stélina may be a proto-version of Bakara.)
It also seems that at this stage, it would be likely that Lilotte was reworked to be the Princess of Bonta, before eventually becoming the Ouginak we know and love.
After this Ankama once again returned to the concept of Lilotte as an orphan, though — even when the movie was still set in Astrub!
And it seems that the draft involved travel between Astrub and Bonta, judging from the usage of a Zaap to attack Luis.
And even at this point they have come up with the tragically cut "Joris and Khan go to adult industry workers and Joris (10yo boy) engages in depressed underaged drinking" scene.
(I'll never forgive Ankama for cutting this. I still argue that it's in character for Khan, our detested/beloved turbovirgin, to do this — as long as he doesn't get together with any of the women due to thinking himself "too good" for them.)
Also, at some point the gods were supposed to play a role. And personally, I am glad it was cut — it feels a bit too grand for the first movie in what was supposed to be a series.
I don't have any grand statement, or conclusion, but it is interesting to see all the ways the movie has changed.
While we are done with the movie and the show, it cannot be understated, just how much we still have to cover. Both in terms of canon, and things out of the realm of canon.
And this includes interviews, and things that never got made.

The thing that often bothers me, is that the creator of the franchise that my most favorite cartoon of all time is a part of, probably despises said cartoon.
I can't not think about that, when I see Simone and other Aux Tresors characters reused in Wakfu season 4 as background character assets, or when I think about how every show except Aux Tresors has had an OST released, or how the only Aux Tresors companion in Waven is Lou. Though I know, logically speaking, that it's more likely because it's just not very popular.
youtube
Funnily enough, I personally, and rather selfishly, think that Welsh & Shedar's demise is probably the greatest fortune to happen to this franchise. What was one of the worst things to ever happen to Tot was one of my greatest fortunes. (I would not care about Joris as a character, had Kerubim never existed. The cartoon, and their relationship, mean a lot to me, for personal reasons.)
To Tot, the thing that I love the very most has cannibalized one of his life's dreams. Starting with the resources, and ending with character designs themselves. Even the character design of a fucking cat??
As an artist myself, I can't even begin to imagine the horror of that, and yet... I feel nothing but joy. It's quite weird, how life works.
The good news is that Welsh and Shedar has been resurrected by Ankama (watch as it gets a full artbook and an OST release before Aux Tresors, an 11 year show that still doesn't have those, yes I am bitter), so, it is mostly water under the bridge. We will hopefully get to enjoy both, in a couple of years.
[source]
But I feel like it's very likely, that a lot of Aux Tresors and the way Tot may feel about it, was influenced by this disaster, and I couldn't begin this post without addressing that.
So, what was, or could be in the future, Welsh and Shedar?
A plot summary from the youtube trailer's description, just as filled with Tot's overwhelming sadness as everything else relating to W&S's cancellation, man, goes as follows: "Here is the trailer for an animated series project launched in 2012 which has very little chance of arriving on your screens. The story is that of Welsh, a young boy forced to fight for an inheritance he never knew existed: that of the throne of the Kingdom of Bonta. Ankama’s “animation” department has plenty of ideas behind its graphics tablets: series, special episodes, films, our brains are always buzzing! However, not all projects are lucky enough to reach you…"
So basically, it was/is/will be a story about a young man, or boy, who finds out he is the next in line for Bonta's throne, and is taken there by Joris. How all of this happens is rather murky, AKA:
Anyway,
Tot has reported that his idea for this series was quite similar to the anime "Ranking of Kings", which I had sadly not watched. Make of that what you will.
When does Welsh & Shedar take place?
Firstly, I will say that, because of how much Tot loves this series, for years it was in a state of vague canonicity. AKA "it did likely happen, but it has never been produced so we don't know WHAT it is, that happened there. There sure was a guy named Welsh at some point."
What points to this is 1. Khan's old man design still being canon,
And 2. This usage of Welsh & Shedar-era Joris in an official timeline. It says that Joris would have been 60 years old, in this series.
Obviously, this timeline is subject to change, if/when Welsh & Shedar becomes real, and there are a lot of things we don't know!
Some curisities...
Funnily enough, there exists this image, which was leaked by a French site when Aux Tresors began airing, — mistakenly used as promo for the series.
It could be depicting some other draft of W&S where Joris is a kid. Or, it could be depicting something between Aux Tresors and W&S, from when Ankama had to make something new up to take W&S's place.
It yet again makes me yearn for an Aux Tresors art book. Because seriously. What does this even mean.
Anyway thank you france for killing W&S, making Aux Tresors (the PEAK.... the SLAY.....) real, and now resurrecting W&S. We truly do live in the kindest timeline 🙏
