The Schools When a Friend Falls in Battle
(This is as if no one can be healed back from being defeated)
The storm student roars in grief, in rage and anger and everything because theyâre feeling Too Much right now and itâs beating against them in an invisible storm that is becoming visible, the entire array of battle has become the most dangerous place. Cyclones whip hair and clothes into something that hurts and will lash skin like an animal tamerâs whip. A choked sob falls from the storm wizardâs trembling form and the enemiesâ eyes widen with nothing but fear because regardless of turns and fairness and pips and cards they are done for.
The ice student lets out a distressed gasp. Their hands shake and reach towards that place where their friend has fallen, where hands that are still full of cards lie limp, those powerful weapons scattered. The ice wizardâs face becomes flat, dangerous like a lake with a too-thin layer of ice. Frost creeps in, covering the ancient runes that decorate the battleground. Their face twists and a snarl comes from somewhere deep in their throat because who knew this wizard, who favored cold drinks in the winter and even colder ones in the summer, who knew they could make such a beautifully terrifying face? The enemies watch, their own faces full of horror as the frost creeps in, as they become encased in freezing cold, oh gods, theyâve never felt anything so cold-
The fire student immediately acts. Before their friend even hits the ground, the rumbling of flames fill this worn battleground. A roar that comes from the wizardâs body and everywhere else accompanies this wildfire, this rage. The fire is going to consume everything in its path of grief and pain, and everyone, enemies and allies alike, should flee now while they can.
The death student stares at the spot where their friend once stood, where they had that determined grimace, where they had fallen. The death student dimly realizes that turns have kept going, that the battlefield skipped the circle where their friend was standing and living and- and everything must suffer as their friend did. Everything is wilting, dying. There is no everything now, no unity in death. There is nothing living, no one deserves it when theyâve hurt them so badly, no one-
The myth student is watching, realization hitting them like the club of the monsters, the minions they summon. This isnât like their minion. They cannot come back, the light cannot come back from their once sparkling eyes. The myth wizardâs own eyes have lost the same light. The ground rumbles, the tremors matching the wizardâs shaking body. The myth wizard is breathing too fast, and it feels like their nightmares have come to life, come to taunt them. Creatures rise out of the groundâs cracks, all screaming war cries that match the pained sounds rambling in the wizardâs skull. Whispers fill the battleground, and all allies and enemies can hear it louder than the summoned minionâs screams.
The life student watches in disbelief. They failed. They had one job, they failed. Their friend is dead now and it is their fault, and nothing was there to cushion their friendâs head, but it wonât matter now, they canât get a concussion or be in pain or healed ever again. Frantically, each turn of theirs is wasted because the card and creatures donât know where to go, because thereâs no one there to heal, no living being oh gods-
The balance student grits their teeth, but a pained scream still rips through their throat. Their eyes close, and they use the same breathing techniques they were taught so they could mediate, under the hot sun of Krokotopia, in the classroom underground that smelled of rich dirt. When their turn comes, no cards are needed, their eyes open wide and light up in divine fury. Justice reigns, the form of the spell in a blinded and fair woman. Everyone is here to be judged, and none shall survive this ancient cruelty.

Fan Theory: the Wizard is one of Old Cob's children
-I know it sounds crazy but I have allot of evidence for why it would make sense that they would be and why you canât prove that they arenât with certainty. Most of it is meh on its own but as a whole I think itâs a viable theory. Or Iâm taking foreshadowing that isnât there but whatevs this is fun.
1.Grandmother Raven began watching them before they did any heroing that would make them noticeable to a being as powerful as her. You could argue that Bartlebyâs surviving eye is proof that Raven and Bartleby can see the future, but her comments in Polaris suggest this is not the case, and that only Bartleby can see the future. Her refusal to help stop Malistaire or Morganthe, and her willingness to kill Cob, suggests that she doesnât actually care about the well being of mortal life. She wouldnât care about the wizard for being a hero anyway, and in Grizzleheim, she only uses the Wizardâs help to free her from the Covenâs prison, and to stop them from waking Ymir. This might seem like a contradiction, but stopping the everwinter would be in her interests since it threatens the ravens, who are her first children, rather than just another mortal race sang into creation by Bartleby.Â
2.The Wizard can harm the Grendils before coming into possession of the Thrice-Blessed Spider Blade. In-universe, only the spiders can harm the Grendil Motherâs descendants (possible foreshadowing of Grandfather Spider), which would make the Wizardâs combat ability sensible if they were a descendant of Spider. Another explanation of this could be that being an outlander could mean that they simply have no ancestors that made the oath, but Bjornâs band was aware of this from the start and it never occurred to anyone that the blade would be unnecessary. It might be safe to say that non Grizzleheim beings are also subject to those rules.
3. The Wizard sets off the Dwarvesâ shadow magic detectors. Pork says that itâs just that the Wizard uses shadow magic rather than being a shadow themself, but it is also possible that the Wizard IS a shadow. The Dwarves are capable of getting shadow pips, yet do not set of the evil detectors themselves.
4. Qyburn states that no mortal of the spiral can enter the Astral Plane. Zander claims that the Wizard can enter the plane because they are from Earth, not the Spiral, but Gamma states that Earth is indeed a world of the Spiral earlier in the narrative. The presence of the Crab Nebula in the sky of the celestial observatory suggests that the Spiral is either the another name for the Milky Way, or that it is a structure contained within our galaxy. Zander could have been lying to protect the Understudy. Being the go-to guy for life magic, Zander would be the first to notice if the Wizard had semi-divine lifeforce like Mellori does. And given the Arcanumâs distrust of shadow magic, he may have been lying to avoid an incident.
5. Old Cobâs prophecy suggests he has met the wizard before. It is HEAVILY implied at the end of Khrysalis that the Wizard is the child described in his prophecy, not Morganthe. He speaks the words âbringing the chosen back to meâ which suggests that at some point in the past he considered this chosen, implied to be the wizard, to be one of his possessions not unlike the rest of the Arachni or like Rat. Also, it isnât said that Spiderâs only children are Rat, Scorpion, and Bat. I think itâs implied that Atlach-Leng is one of spiderâs direct creations, since he was alive before the song of creation. Being trapped in a cave since the Song would make it unlikely that he learned shadow magic from anyone other than Spider himself.
6. When the Trickster fights the wizard, he claims that Spider wants them captured alive. There is no reason why Cob wouldnât kill a threat to his plans, and the only reason I can think of is that wants the wizard alive out of sentiment.
7. It would mirror the revelation that Mellori is a daughter of Raven. Ravenâs actions during the events of Mirage also give some evidence. She sends Mellori to kill spider because she expects that the Wizard will refuse to do so. It isnât because they are adverse to murder since they have caused flesh having villains to become ghosts before, even going as far as mounting Krokhotepâs head on their wall, which is kinda messed up in my opinion. Cob himself thinks that it is because the wizard knows that killing him would destroy the spiral, but Melloriâs opinion of Cob in the Astral Plane suggests she didnât actually know what would happen if she killed Cob at the time. And neither did the wizard. Proof of Cobâs claim doesnât come until later, so he could easily have been bluffing.Raven would have known that wizard didnât know the truth yet, given her attempts to stop them from entering Zruvian Grove sanctuary. Itâs possible she thought the Arouracle of Zruvian Grove would have told the wizard the truth about their parentage. That would be a parallel to Mellori who learned of her real origin from the Auroracle in the River of Frozen Tears sanctuary.
9. The wizard was capable of opening the black holeâs door without assistance. It is likely that Raven sealed Cob in the black hole using the same magic that seals the paradox chains. In Empyrea, Medulla uses Mellori to break the chain with her divine essence, knowing he canât do it as a mortal. If the black holeâs door used the same magic, it wouldnât make sense that the wizard could open it if they werenât at least some form of semi-divine.
9. The Wizard is not present in the nornâs tapestry. Given that both Earth and the Human species exist in the spiral it is likely that humanity is one of Bartleby or Ravenâs creations. If the wizard was born to mortal human parents or to one of those two, they should be present in the loom of fate, but they arenât. Raven might not know who the wizardâs parents are, and their conspicuous absence from a tapestry that supposedly contains information on all of creation would certainly be suspicious and might justify why she thinks the wizard is so interesting.
10. Velma being one of Cobâs children is a popular joke theory in the fandom that has even been acknowledged by the staff, but it has some merit in the story. As said earlier, there is evidence that Spider has other children in various corners of the Spiral. The Arcanum would likely know this. They distrust Velma for her practice of shadow magic, despite the wizard using it themself. Itâs possible that Ione mistakenly believes that Velma is a child of spider and she just wonât mention the real reason, which is completely in character given how much about the Cabal she hid from the Wizard.
11. The writers love pop culture jokes and references. Empyrea is extra full of references to old scifi and music, case in point the James T. Pork and all of Zanadu. The writers would absolutely be the kind of people to pull a Darth Vader is Lukeâs father kind of scene with Cob.

The Schools When Very, Very Sleep Deprived
(No flowery prose on this one, guys. Iâve been awake for 19 hours straight, and thatâs a lot for me okay. Also, swearing.)
Our Storm student??? Sleep Deprived??? No, theyâre just finishing a project⌠with the help of like A Lot of coffee. Or sugar. Anyway, itâs dangerous. Donât worry, when they pass out over their newest project itâll be safe to move them to an appropriate sleeping surface. (I meant a BED, DONâT PUT THEM ON TOP OF THE FRIDGE, MYTH WIZARD)
The Ice student is little dead inside. Oops, the fire wizard told them they âlook tiredâ. They look like they want to kill our fire wiz, because when people say that, youâre actually tired, or you look like shit. Iâd start running. Doesnât matter if you did it or not. Run. Save yourself from scarring memories.
Our Fire student has ZERO FILTER. Theyâre running from our lovely ice wiz now. Look at them go. Stumbling like drunk giraffes at a circus. (Also, I advise leaving anything explosive out of their reach. Just to be safe.)
The Death student is giggling. Call 911, call Oprah, call Dworgyn, what the fuck. Theyâre giggling a lot. And making skeleton puns. And decorating for Halloween. Itâs the beginning of August.Â
The Myth student is busy being a miscreant fool. Somewhere, Cyrusâ head popped out of the ground like an alarmed meerkat. He knows of impending bullshit to come. The Myth wizard drew dicks on the defenseless, sleeping form of our balance wizard three hours ago. (I MEAN IT, PUT THE STORM WIZARD D O W N)
The Life student is mixing energy drinks, alcohol, and coffee. Theyâre snorting pixie sticks. They made a chalk outline in the powder, like a personâs at a crime scene, and are yelling at the others to âAsk for heals one more time, you godless heathen motherfuckersâ.
The balance student passed out at Nine PM. Like a reasonable human being. And a huge fuckinâ nerd.Â

Using Magic.
Using Fire magic fills the users body with warmth, starting with a slow heating up of the fingertips to a sudden rush of warmth going through the arms- the feeling will spread to the stomach and start to snake itâs way around the muscles in the casters legs. Gradually the feeling spreads to ones head, becoming unbearable to test whether or not the user is ready to cast this spell; if someone fizzles, it means that they were either mentally or physically unprepared to cast the spell.
Using Ice magic has the opposite effect of Fire magic, it freezes the caster to the bone and numbs their body; due to this effect, thaumaturgy is very much a mental magic and one must be extremely focused to be able to successfully cast a spell. Ice magic causes the feeling of being so cold that ones bones and skin begins to hurt, aching and becoming stiff- if the spell is too much for the caster, ice may start to form on their bodies and they must force themselves to fizzle before they do irreversible damage.
Using Storm magic sends electricity through the users nervous system, it as if they are being struck by lightning. The users entire body becomes numb from the shock and their hair stands on end, theyâre body becoming static and having the potential to shock people with just a touch of the fingertip. Divination uses the body to cast spells, meaning the wizard must overcome the numbness to cast a spell- while Storm spells havenât really had any severe cases of damage to a wizard, there have been the rare report of it hurting someone.
Using Myth magic will fill the user with visions, they will see things they never thought they would see. Visions from the past, present and future all blurring into one spell- Myth magic is one of the less dangerous types of magic, the most it can do is give the user a migraine. Conjuring forces the user to sculpt the visions they have into a spell, they must locate the vision that correlates with the spell the most and build onto that to summon what they desire.
Using Death magic makes the caster feel sickly, nauseous and frail- as one may have guessed, Necromancy is in the top 3 most deadly of magics to use. While effects of casting a Death spell varies, they usually consist of making the caster feel drained of life; it is visible on the wizards body as they pale and begin to sweat, looking as if they have a fever. Necromancy is one of the only magics known to kill many people using it- it can feel as if the persons soul is being sucked out of them and there are rumours around the Spiral that the undead the wizards face are wizards that were not strong enough and had their souls sucked out. However, theyâre just rumours, right?
Using Life magic is by far the most pleasant, it fills the user with an energy like no other and has positive effects overall. Theurgy makes the caster feel like they have energy, to make sure they do not tire easily- however, this is considered a negative effect by a wide variety of wizards as the caster is filled with a false sense of strength, not knowing if they are wounded or their body is growing tired due to the magic filling their body with energy that will only last till the end of the battle.
Using Balance magic requires the user to be at a blank state of mind, knowing nothing but Balance and tranquility. They must focus on one thing and one thing only: Balance. Every time Sorcery is used, the caster is judged- if they are not in the correct state of mind, they will fizzle and are less likely to survive the battle due to how they are judged. Sorcery makes the user feel calm, in order to be able to cast the spell and that clouds their judgement of the battle- it is in the top 3 most deadly of magics.
