Portfolio 7: Art and Culture
Tumblr media
This is an example of Futurists style. We see geometric designs with flowing shapes. There is some areas that you can see almost scientific shapes as well as nature shapes.
Tumblr media
This is an example of official Stalin architecture. It looks like a mix of Baroque and Gothic styles with a cake like style.
Tumblr media
This is an example of London punk design. It has a cut and paste elements. it is also very anti-establishemnt as seen here by text over the face of the queen. And has the example of violent contrast.

Room style...
Tumblr media
Please excuse my messy room. The styles in this picture that I can point out are the Rococo type of patterning in the bedspread and the somewhat oriental style of the lamp. Most of the items in the room are for function over style.   Other than that, the room itself is postmodern being built in the 70′s. That is shown with the wood paneling on the wall and above the window.

RN Portfolio 5-6: Design and Culture
ROCOCO: The images below show a bedframe and a painting in the Rococo style. The beframe was produced in Italy in the 1920′s. Here we see abundance of gilded edges, swirling patterns, and not many straight lines. The painting is by the french artist Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and is call the ‘The Swing’ (1767-1768). We see attention to detail in the dress and the soft color pallet that is widely seen during the rococo period.

ORIENT: Here we see two portraits that are painted in the Orient style. The first is A Woman in Turkish Dress  by Jean-Étienne Liotard somewhere between 1740-1750. The second is An Albanian Smoking by Jean-Léon Gérôme in 1881. Both portraits show a caucasian person in a setting or clothing that would be considered “other. Even though the second painting is titled An Albanian Smoking, the person pictured has fairly light skin and a mustache that was popular of European adventurers of the time.

Portfolio 4: Scamper
“Proximity for nurses means a variety of things - safety, efficiency, comfort, reliability.” (Naccarella, 2016 pg.9)
In my ER, there are several different types of stretchers used. Each has a common element that it has break and steer on a seesaw type lever you use with your foot. There are 2 main problems that I have faced with this mechanism. First is that they are not usually color coded on the lever itself. This makes it hard to know if you are on steer or break and I find myself looking under the bed to see what I am on. Some models have this adjustment, but it should be a standard. The other issue is that these levers are not always on all four sides of the bed. Sometimes they are at the head and foot, or just on the sides. it makes you have to walk around the bed to find where it is on that stretcher even if all you want to do is move the bed 4 inches to the left.
I would redesign the lever to be red on the break side and green on the steer side as well as having the lever on all sides of the bed for easy access.
Using that small change of color and placement, it would create a more efficient tool. I wouldn’t have to bend over and look to see if the bed is locked. I could easily move the bed into a different position in the room without having to waste time finding the locking mechanism.

RN Portfolio 3: Elements * I used all my own photos / artwork for this portfolio*
Tumblr media
Color:
This is more powerful with the sunset behind it. The both warm and cool colors surrounding a dark figure in the foreground give the statue a more commanding presence. The straight and angular lines in the background elements (powerlines and barn) not only draw the eye inward to the figure but from the foreground to the background towards the sunset. They create a contrast to the curverlinear statue which has no straight lines. It gives the statue sense of fertility and new growth.
I feel empowered when I look at this photograph. Depending on the lighting and the angle of how you are looking at the statue, it can give a different feel. In the morning this statue always looked fresh and new to me, but at dusk it was empowering and invergrating. This statue was designed to make you think about Mother Nature but was placed in a rotary in the middle of an almond orchard. This creates a dichotomy of the nature it is supposed to represent and the dark hard bronze it was made of.

Pattern/ Texture:
There are 2 types of texture in this photo. Texture of the grape itself and the texture of the light and shadow in the background. In combination it feels like you could feel the texture through the computer screen.  There is is also a pattern created by the background colors. They are out of focus but you can tell by the shape, color, and contrast that they are leaves.

I would use videos comparing the different types of trauma shears on the parket to communicate the importance of strength, sharpness, and comfort of the Xshear design.
The Xshear is a pair of scissors designed to cut though any clothing on a persons body without cutting the skin. They are unlike other shears because they have blades that curve away from the body while cutting. They are also comfortable to use with a large sturdy handle and non slip inner texture.
I would use images of EMS providers using them in real world situations cutting though different types of materials. I would have the providers wearing gloves to show they are nonslip.
The texture of the inner grip as well as the material used on the grip would show the nonslip quality. The strength and hardness of  both the plastic and metal would be good for each person to hold. The shape of the handle would be good to show the ergonomics.

I believe that mitigation of staff fatigue needs to go back to the communication phase. The ER I work in is not huge, only 24 beds, but I put in an average of 10,000+ steps in a good 12 hour shift without even thinking about it. Nursing staff needs to be included in design processes to reduce unneeded back and forth from storeroom to the patient rooms, from a documentation area to patient rooms, and the ability to effectively communicate with other staff members.
I would use M in the scamper model to modify the surroundings. Placing all things needed for patient care on one side of the bed within easy reach so employees don’t have to circle a bed 10 times just for a bed bath. I would also increase room size so all the needed equipment, carts, and personnel could be present and within easy reach, Also anti fatigue floors!!
Currently, the design object is at the lowest level of design needs. It is not functional in the way the space has been designed to reduce fatigue on staff. After my SCAMPER ideas, my object would be pushed up to the Proficiency level. Things would be more proficient, reducing the number of steps and there for the amount of  physical fatigue on the personnelle.

I work in a newly designed Emergency Room and one of the issues I face with helping patients to the bathroom, is the lip from the flooring on the outside to the tile on the inside of the bathroom. This is not the lip in question but it looks a lot like it. (I will post a picture of it tomorrow)
The reason it is a problem is that it is just big enough to make rolling IV poles or wheelchairs over it an issue. You often have to get a rolling start to get over it or pick up the pole. This creates a safety issue for both the staff and the patients. There are plenty of elderly patients whom come in and out of the hospital and if they are unable to pick up their feet, this also creates a tripping hazard.
To mitigate falls and the need to use more effort to go into and out of the bathroom, the lip needs to be more rounded and have a longer slope. This will create a smoother surface for wheeled objects to go over and will not trip patients who have a hard time picking up their feet.
