Cup-hilt Rapier
Dated: mid-17th century
Culture: Spanish
Provenance: Spain
Measurements: overall lenght 123cm
The sword has a straight, double-edged blade ribbed at the center, a very short tang, while the ricasso is outlined at the margins. Its cup is richly pierced and divided in four portions, two of them picturing lions, the other dragons surrounded by foliage and rays at the base. The upper border is bent toward the outside and is decorated with four fringes and pierced with racemes. A counter-plate stays in the inside, pierced with floral motifs.
The straight quillons and the guard are pierced with high-relieved leaves. The quillon-block is pointed and chiselled while the spinning top-shaped pommel and the cylindrical grip are pierced with bas-relieved floral motifs. Similar weapons are generally part of the best collections and museums such as the Marzoli Collection, Odescalchi Collection, Wallace Collection, Victoria and Albert Museum and Metropolitan Museum, just to name a few.
