I want to read this right now please!!!

So here's the thing. I'm working on the BF5 rewrite fic. But y'all gotta understand.

I fucking love Sage. She hits all my tropes and all my sweet spots and I think she is an incredibly strong, powerful, nuanced character and genuinely one of the best written ancient aliens out there (at least in cartoons).

I also absolutely adore writing how grief stricken, guilt ridden, and horrified she is by what she's become. How the warping and loss of her memories has left her with only a glimpse of what she's done, and that glimpse is dark, and coated in the gore of broken open red sentients and their spilled anti-matter. How she tries so hard to be better to fight.

She's dying, you know.

The mobi slows it, but it doesn't stop it. She's dying. They know she's dying. Every week the glowing gash in her chest gets a little brighter, a little bigger. She doesn't remember how she got it. (We can guess)

She doesn't know how she survived (she will).

She doesn't know why she survived (and she will, we know, and we will understand more than we were ever given).

She is grieving and mourning and broken and damaged and weak weak weak. She is not enough to save them. She is not enough to protect them.

(No matter how many times they say she is not broken, that weakness and illness are not brokenness, that health is not worth, she does not listen. sentients are supposed to be perfect. she is not perfect. why can't she be perfect.)

She was never supposed to care. They were supposed to be replaceable. But they include her. They teach her games. They tell her jokes.

They love her.

The tell her that they love her. And they show it. In every action. In every word.

And by all the stars in the multiverse, she cannot deny that she loves them too. She loves them so much it hurts. She would do anything for them. And that terrifies her. She's never loved something as much as her people before.

They are not her people. But they want to be. And they want her to be theirs.

When she is healed, when her mind and body are whole again and the pieces she lost to her brother are returned (they are not. the ones that come back are broken and gritty, and there are some she'll never get back. she'll never be a perfect sentient again. how can she protect them if she is not perfect?), she finds herself with synthetic tearducts that bleed a glowing light Spinner calls stardust. She is the only sentient she has ever known that can cry, and she now remembers many sentients.

She almost cannot stomach how appropriate it is, in the face of everything.

But before then, when she is still broken (you're not broken, sage, please, believe us. you're okay) and dying, when she is begging them to keep going without her, she has to learn to live with this feeling of love. They refuse to leave her. They refuse to let her die. They fight as much to protect Earth as they do to find a cure and save her. They don't want to do this without her.

And as the time she can spend outside her charging bubble shrinks, and the things she can do begin to slip away (she cannot float anymore. her feet refuse to leave the ground. she cannot call things to her. she must ask someone to get them.), she curls into herself and pleads to every power in the multiverse that they find a way to save her.

She doesn't want to die. She wants to live. To laugh. To help them win.

She doesn't want to die.

And when the chance is there, to get it all back, to save herself, to be with her friends, to be able to help, to feel worthy again -- can you blame her for taking it? Can you blame her for ignoring the warning signs?

She had weeks, if not days. She knew the price was high. She knew it would be a cost she might not be able to stomach.

She didn't know it would be Krytus, stars believe her, she didn't know it would be Krytus.

And she'll never forgive herself for that.

They should have just let her die.

BF5 texting styles headcanon

Vert: despite being the leader, Vert never answers his texts, and his teammates have learned to Comm him instead. He’s still getting used to the need to carry his phone with him now that he has close friends in Handler Corners and he literally only used to have a landline for the garage’s business. It drives Agura insane

Agura: has read receipts on and is either in a battle zone or dead if she doesn’t reply in five minutes

Zoom: only texts in lowercase letters

Stanford: intentionally waits at least one hour before replying to texts because he thinks it makes him seem cool and unavailable. this drives his teammates absolutely crazy

Sherman: responds to you within the hour and still uses :) instead of emojis

Spinner: replies instantly with five texts or doesn’t reply for three days; there is no in between

AJ: takes hours to text back but uses 10+ emojis and exclamation points in every text

Tezz: doesn’t give his teammates his phone number

A: Of the fanfic you’ve written, which is your favorite and why?

This is a great one! A lot of my Bf5 fanfics were written early on when I was not a great writer. (This isn’t like, a compliment hunt, it’s just objectively true.) From my OG work probably Eternity because I'm proud of fleshing out Kyburi's story and giving her character more depth, but for what you could call my renaissance period, probably Wheeler's Night Out! It was a fun challenge to get just the right degree of years of pain between Vert and Jack, plus of course, the subtle Vergura 😏

J:  What’s your favorite fanfic trope?  Have you written it?

I love the Five Times trope because I love getting little scenes of character interaction! I've done it for Star Wars Rebels & I'm currently working on one for BF5! Guess what it's about? you got me it's Vergura

Q: Do you like getting prompts from your readers?

YES. A million times yes!!! i love getting new ideas sparked in my brain and they’re so often ideas that I never would have thought of but fall in love with. Send them always!!

T: Any fanfic tropes you can’t stand?

This is gonna make me sound like a capital-J jerk so thanks for making me answer it!!! I'm not a huge fan of self-inserts or OCs. I think it's awesome that people love these shows so much that they want to put themselves into them and interact with the characters, but personally, I'm watching for the characters I already love, not new people. I'm sorry!! there's nothing wrong with these works and I think they're a great form of self-expression but they're just not my cup of tea

U: Is there a pairing you would like to write, but haven’t tried yet?

Vergura really is my ride or die but I am a little intrigued by Sherman/Agura. Just like. just a little. Solely because of that one screenshot from the webisode Dropped Call where his hand is on her leg under the table at Zeke’s… but I’ve never been able to get past Vergura enough to write about them. Sigh. Vergura ‘til the end

Summary: Tezz asks Agura to go on a practice date with him so that he can seduce someone he’s fallen for in town. They don't fall for each other, and nothing goes as planned.

BF5 + Illness Headcanons

When someone on the team is sick...

Vert puts them on bed rest, that's an order. Absolutely no missions or even looking at data logs until they feel 100% better

Agura makes sure they have everything they need, blankets food heating pad etc., and sets an alarm to check in on them every hour. she also works with Sage to administer their medication schedules (looking at you, Spinner, who once tried to drink an entire bottle of cough syrup after he sneezed one time)

Zoom hangs out with them so they're not lonely, has 100% faith in his immune system, doesn't believe he can get infected (spoiler alert: he can). Vert shuts this down right away because "we're trying to save the world here Zoom and I can't have two people on the bench" you love your cute lil sports metaphors Vert

Stanford will make them a playlist of their favorite tunes to cheer them up

Sherman will make his world-famous chicken noodle soup; he only makes it when his teammates are sick and everyone who's healthy fights for the leftovers

Spinner tries not to be too freaked out or let his germaphobia get the best of him. He offers to play video games with them as long as they're separated by a plastic sheet in the medbay, or he'll try out some new jokes, or at the very least hack into whatever he needs to so that they can watch their favorite movies for free

Tezz hasn't gotten sick in nine years except for the times he had to eat something weird to survive on the Sentient moon, so at first he's a little wary of his sick teammate... but then he eventually decides he needs to build his immune system back up so he'll just stand over them until he gets coughed on. Vert shuts this behavior down until AJ joins the team and it's OK for them to have two people who can't fight in Battle Zones

AJ is a lot like Zoom, he has no concept of germ theory or immunity and so he'll happily watch movies or just chill with the sick person. Again, Vert shuts this down; he can only lose so many people at a time

Sage doesn't understand a lot about human illness but she's excited to learn! Sherman is the first one to get sick canonically and at first she's way too eager and asks him a million questions that he's too tired to answer. once she starts to understand illness more she pulls back, but she does as much of her work as she can in the medbay to keep her poor sick humans company

When they're sick...

Vert: Vert hates being sick and he doesn't want the team to worry about him but Agura can smell it a mile away. she takes over and makes him rest and takes care of him and hey, maybe this actually isn't so bad

Agura: Agura is the worst about being sick. Think Rosa Diaz of Brooklyn 99. She completely denies it, doesn't want to look weak, doesn't need anyone's help. Vert makes her count Battle Keys just so she'll finally sit down and finds her curled up on the floor in the vault taking a nap. then he carries her to bed and gives her little forehead kisses

Zoom: second-worst only to Agura. Vert also has to give him some made-up BS job so that he can get some rest. they consider handcuffing him to the medbay so that he'll stay there but realize that might be traumatic after the incidents of "Man Down" so they just ask him really nicely to please stay put and get better, ok? we'll get you your favorite milkshake and AJ will come hang out with you if you do!

Stanford: the neediest person alive when he's sick. Stanford gets bored and lonely, fast. He's always asking for a cough drop or another glass of water. finally Agura, ever a bestie, just facetimes him all day long and puts her phone in an armband she uses for running so he can feel like he's hanging out with everybody in the Hub

Sherman: Sherman is the Hub's best patient. he just calmly vibes in the medbay until he feels better (meanwhile Spinner is freaking out because his brother is going to DIE). everyone tries to make him chicken noodle soup that's as good as his secret recipe and everyone fails but he's touched by the gesture

Spinner: as a germaphobe, Spinner is completely freaked out when he's sick. He makes Sage test him for every illness known to humankind, including things like the black plague or malaria that would be impossible for him to get in handler corners. he forces his teammates to dress in full hazmat suits whenever they bring him something and panics the whole time, which makes his illness worse. Vert, Agura and Sage secretly agree to add Xanax to his medication and that actually works wonders

Tezz: Tezz is too proud to admit it but after nine years of being on his own when he got sick, he secretly loves having people take care of him. He mostly stays quiet in the medbay and surprises his teammates by thanking them for taking care of him

AJ: AJ hates being sick and is way too quick to think he's getting better, which often prolongs his illnesses. he'll be in the medbay for a few hours or a single day and then be like "Vert, I'm healed, let's go snowboarding" or something like that. go back to bed AJ, you're sick!!

Taylor Jenkins Reid’s books are so great because they are super plot-driven and easy to read the way that airport fiction is but then they are actually really deep and beautiful and moving and human, and the social commentary aside, have some of the best character writing out there.

Krytus…. Let’s do it.

1. Physical weak spots

I’m taking a literal interpretation here and this is a tricky one because of the way Sentient shells work, so I’d guess I’d say his physical weak spot is anywhere near his core/torso.

However, I headcanon that Krytus’s shell could be damaged in stasis or hibernation which would result in him losing the ability to morph his arm into a sword. Look out for a fic that features this potentially coming soon 👀

2. Emotional/moral weak spots

Krytus is a baddie and hates having weak spots so he would never admit to it or indicate it but I think he has a real soft spot for young Red Sentient children, at least before his species was frozen. He sees the future in them and wants to encourage them to embrace being Red and not let Blues try to act superior.

I also headcanon that he had a soft spot for Kyburi/they’re lovers but being Red he has an odd way of showing it (see below/read my fic Eternity if you’re bored)

As for moral weak spots…. This man does not have morals so he is just one giant immoral strong spot

8. Bad memories/experiences

Krytus has *bad* memories of his parents, who are both Blue and always favored Sage. Not a happy childhood over here. Once he was old enough to understand the divide between Reds and Blues it was downhill from there

I also think Sage’s betrayal hit him harder than he’ll ever admit. Like, they’re twins, they must have been very close as kids, and Sage always did her best to defend him until she realized he was a danger to Blues, so he would have felt blindsided by what she did

10. Fears/phobias

His #1 fear is failing at his mission of resurrecting the Reds and destroying Sage. That’s why he’s so aggressive, driven and ruthless. A related and also primary fear is being seen as weak. When he snaps at Kyburi after she says “You’re still weak from Sage’s psionic attack” in Spawn Hunters, he absolutely flips out at her, not just because he’s offended—he is even though she’s right—but he refuses to be associated with that word
