Alright I mentioned it earlier but here we go, my thoughts on Rhodes Island hookup culture. Read on under the cut

So first off I’ll say that a specific fic got me thinking about this, because in said fic (in which Saga is the Throat Goat despite being a dog) there was mention of a Rhodes Island intranet hookup app, like Grindr etc. (I’m not linking the fic here bc idk if the author would like that or not but it’s out there if you look.)

I loved the concept and as happens when I like something I thought about it a lot. Rhodes has an intranet, a pretty extensive one but it’s still fairly self contained within the landship. That means it wouldn’t be hard to roughly keep tabs on most things that might be hosted on it, which would mean if the hookup app existed it would have to do so with approval. If it had approval that would mean it didn’t represent a detriment to RI’s day to day operation, which would require some rules.

I’ll break it down into 3 important areas, Infrastructure, etiquette and health.

First up, infrastructure.

This starts with the app itself, a sort of small scale social media that if one wished could be accessed from the personal terminal (basically a tablet) that most RI operators seem to be issued. People could match based on preferences, departments, or even operator designation. Maybe you want to get railed by a sturdy defender specifically, that’s up to you!

Now for this app to work it would need back end support and fairly bulky security since personal information on operators and other personnel that you wouldn’t want just anyone getting into whenever the landship linked up with a city.

Enter, Closure and her engineering team.

They are skilled enough that encrypting and managing the back end of the app could easily be folded into their other responsibilities. And if the records on the app are given roughly the same level of respect as patient records, with equivalent consequences for their misuse, they could be trusted to safeguard the information on the app. Given that they likely use it too, it’s in everyone’s best interest to keep it working and keep things somewhat confidential.

So, with the app people can connect and if there’s a proximity feature like Grindr, can even see people around them that they might want to hook up with. Where do they go?

They could go to either of their dorms sure, but maybe that doesn’t quite have the feel for what they wanna do, or the dorms are more crowded than they’d like. Here’s where physical infrastructure comes in, sex rooms.

Keeping in mind again the size of Rhodes, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine a few set areas, unused storage, extra dorms etc, to be partially or fully converted into essentially hotel rooms. Maybe even with a theme setup, dungeon, office what have you, if you book it in advance and have Closure use her connections set it up for you. Extrapolate that idea out and, on the off chance she’s convinced to help somehow, Dusk could turn any empty room temporarily into any fantasy location you liked. Regardless, wether it’s a basic hotel type setup or temporary fantasy dream room, its stocked with condoms, lube and you know for sure no one will bother you.

These spaces would also serve as good locations for adults only events like mixers, classes or parties.

Now for etiquette.

Rhodes Island is a pretty well oiled machine, everyone’s got a job to do and generally speaking is pretty damn good at it. All of them are important to keeping things running smoothly, which is why it’s a huge faux pas to verbally hit on someone while either of you is working. Nobody has time for that and if they aren’t using the app where you could find them to chat there, they probably aren’t interested. So outside of designated off duty social areas, bars and the like, people generally don’t make passes at each other unless they are already close. It’s understood and expected for the work to come first.

But say you do match with a hookup and you want a bit more room, or a specific atmosphere. A quicky at the gym or some heavy petting in a garden, whatever your into. It’s less officially supported but unofficially recognized that operators can request use of a space for a “private training session” with their terminal and, if permission is granted, they won’t be bothered for at least a short while. This is generally for quick, spur of the moment things or, if it’s going to be longer, understood that it’s to be done during the off hours of whatever space they are using.

This one always comes with some level of risk of getting walked in on accidentally but it’s a rare occurrence since most folks will see the display on a room keypad reading “private training session” and either not want to interrupt the training or know what’s going on and want to interrupt even less. They don’t want someone walking in on them the next time they do it after all.

There’s also most likely some sort of RI hanky code or similar, but that would get waaay to in depth to go into here. Real life hanky code goes hard and we don’t have to account for superpower based sex.

And finally, we get to health.

Rhodes Island is, at its core, a medical facility. But more than that it’s a facility who’s primary stated goal is for infected and those affected by the tragedies that are all too common on terra to be able to live normal fulfilling lives, and in my opinion that includes a healthy sex life for those who want it.

Regular medical checkups are necessary for all staff, infected or not, so keeping an eye out for things like STD’s is commonplace. Sex education classes and information is available to anyone who needs it and contraception is made readily available as operator health always takes priority.

It’s mentioned that contracting oripathy through direct contact isn’t generally a vector for infection but we know from some sources that it can pass to a child, so pregnancies aboard the landship are rare given the risk and all the resources available to prevent it. If it’s intentional then there’s usually medical staff/a family planning counselor involved to inform the would be parents of any risk and of the difficulties raising a child in this environment. It’s not frowned upon to have kids, but it is expected you go into things eyes open.

Overall I think much of the hookup culture at Rhodes hinges on the medical department, Kal’tsit being the most likely candidate to sign off on all of this since it obviously wouldn’t be Amiya. Kal’tsit understands people better than most with how long she’s been alive and, as long as it’s done within the framework that’s been put in place for it, the importance of a healthy sex life to the morale and mental health of many of RI’s operators.

Especially given that many of them are living on borrowed time as is, wether that’s due to oripathy or being a frontline combatant.

Why wouldn’t an organization with a mission statement like RI’s want their people to claim whatever joy they could with the time they have left?
