There's also a big political side to this, because elections are coming up, and people are trying to get supporters and it's a whole mess. I don't know specifics, I only know what I hear my relatives telling my family over the phone, but there's this guy, 'Saint' Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan, or 'Rockstar Baba' and you should really google him because I can't explain how terrible he is on here. Anyway, he makes movies where he portrays himself as Waheguru, or as one of the Guru's, which is extremely disrespectful. So his movies weren't allowed to play in Punjab and his followers were pissed, but over the summer one political leader (idk the name sorry) wanted his followers to be in Punjab, because he wanted them to vote for him, so he let that guys films be shown. That isn't that bad, but it's strongly likely that the people who stole and disrespected the Guru Granth Sahib are the guys followers. Whether the Baba actually told them to do it, nobody really knows. So right now, people are protesting him, the desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib, the blackout of media coverage, the arrests of other protesters, the violence from the police towards the protesters, and the police/governments lack of actions towards the actual criminals. Again, I don't have any sources other than my family/relatives here and in India, but this is what I've heard from people who actually live in Punjab so I'm assuming it's correct, I could be wrong.

Do you know any background for what's going on in Punjab with the Sikhs? I saw your post and went to google to try and figure out what exactly is happening and got a lot of articles with really complicated hard to follow answers that didn't make much sense. If you wouldn't mind taking the time to explain the situation, I'd be much obliged.

Unfortunately there is has been a media blackout so i’d take most media coverage with a grain of salt. The current unrest is a part of a long standing history of marginalization of Sikhs in India. 

A copy of the Guru Granth Sahib (the Sikh Holy text), was stolen from a gurdwara in Burj Jawahar Ke village in Faridkot in the early summer. This understandably caused a lot of anger and fear among Sikhs because these types of vile actions have become commonplace in Faridkot and neighboring areas. There were some clashes that occurred between police and Sikhs who began organizing in small numbers to protest the heightened hostility against there communities. Nearby villages displayed posters & imagery with anti-Sikh rhetoric. And a month later, in October pages from the Guru Granth Sahin were found desecrated at the protest spread to the largest numbers across the state of Punjab in over thirty years. The police responded with horrific violence that continued to escalate.

Wait… hold up. Every state is colored in. That can’t be right… right? 

Unfortunately, the map is accurate. And it’s especially problematic for millennial women, who are much more likely to have a bachelor’s degree or higher than millennial men, but who are consistently earning less living and living in poverty more.
