I've seen a lot of art and comments and posts and videos about the hurtful words both Jax and Ragatha throw at Gangle in episode 4. Specifically, that they like her better when she's sad.
Taken at face value, yeah, these are really hurtful statements and can be super traumatizing to hear. But I interpreted them in a way that I haven't seen anyone bring up yet. (Though I could be wrong and just haven't seen any)
Honestly, even though the way they said it is really negative and hurtful....with how her digital body works, they're also kind of saying "i like you better when you're not pretending to be someone you're not". The sad mask is her real face. It's her true, honest emotions. The comedy mask is something she uses to cover up who she really is and how she really feels. Even though they're being mean here, and saying it in a really bad way, they kind of ARE right to like her better when she's not masking.
As I interpreted the episode, this is why she looks so goddamn relieved at the end of her shift, when she finally takes off the happy mask on her own. She's taking a step to accepting herself as she is, instead of always trying to cover it up with false cheer that clearly exhausts her. We see, multiple times, that she's capable of feeling positive emotions without the happy mask. The happy mask is fake, and it contributes to her negative self worth and self hatred. Being told that the happy mask, the fake version of her, is the version they like least, in a roundabout way it's telling her that her genuine self is the version of her they want to spend time with. I hope she comes to the same conclusion.

every time I mention how many days sober I am I appreciate people congratulating me and telling me to keep up the good work. it is nice. but I also wish that milestones in addiction recovery weren’t still so pinned to length of sobriety/abstinence
yeah yeah I’m 50 days sober who cares. how about the fact that, when I do drink, it tends to be nipped in the bud after two days nowadays instead of weeks or months? how about the fact that drinking has been condensed to a six pack because I’m at the end of my tether, instead of browning out every night? how about my friend who has decided to stop drinking alone, and is actually sticking to that? recovery doesn’t always look like sobriety and I wish it was more normal to talk about that. yknow. when addiction is normal to talk about at all

A witch puts a spell on a girl, a sleeping spell that promises the girl shall wake through true love’s kiss. Men come and kiss her. She slumbers. Women come and press their lips to hers, but still she sleeps. Many years past, and the girl remains still. One bright morning, a lost little boy finds her resting spot and clears the dust and grime from her face. He offers her a kiss on her forehead, and her eyes flutter open. She never feels romantic love for a man nor a woman, and she cares for the boy until the day she dies.
A young woman is imprisoned in a castle by a monstrously formed prince. The servants of the castle hope for them to fall in love, and when the spell is broken they assume their prayers have been answered. They are all surprised, but nonetheless pleased, when it is revealed to them that the young woman and prince are the truest of friends, and nothing more.
They say the kingdom is ruled by an evil queen, a woman who is incapable of loving. She is unmarried, she has no consorts, and she wishes for no partner. She is the wretched queen, the heartless queen. She must hate her daughter, for her daughter is beautiful, and women are incapable of liking another woman who’s prettier than themselves. It must be for this reason that the princess was sent away, not for how she was attacked by a man in the woods. They say the kingdom is ruled by an evil queen because she cannot love. The queen loves her daughter, and that is enough for them both.
There lives a prince who is forced to choose a bride at the ball. He meets many beautiful women, but find none which he loves. He spies one in a gorgeous gown and wonder in her eyes, and he dances with her all night long. The kingdom is sure he has found his bride. When the clock strikes midnight he tells her how he will never love a woman, or a man, in the way he is expected to. The beautiful woman smiles and tells him she expects nothing from him. The next morning the prince and the beautiful woman are missing, having run off together to see the world. They leave their shoes behind in their haste.
Many kinds of love exist. It doesn’t all have to be romantic.

googling shit like "why do i feel bad after hanging out with my friends" and all of the answers are either "you need better friends" (i don't; my friends are wonderful) or "your social battery is drained, you need to rest and regain your energy levels" (i don't; i've got tons of energy, it's just manifesting as over-the-top neurotic mania). why is this even happening. it's like some stupid toll i have to pay as a punishment for enjoying myself too much

If you're a TERF you're a gender fascist. No other way to spin it. You claim your ideology is about protecting women and children but what it actually necessitates is an overfixation on people's genitals and the persecution of a minority group that does not actually hold institutional power. You insist on fitting humanity into two strict boxes that do not reflect the true diversity present among 8 billion of us. The moment you start talking about "large gametes"--what the fuck are you doing?
All fascists cloak their actions in protective language. But unless you're going after the white male billionaire class that actually holds the most power and does the most harm to both humanity and the planet, you're not protecting anyone and your "resistance" is not worth anything.

Can’t wait for, like, 2025 when we look back on the 2018/2019 era and say “hey, remember when we were all really freaking depressed? That was a crazy time! Glad we aren’t like that anymore”
