Actually thinking about SOTR and the fact that it didn't seem like there was any plan to save any of the kids after the arena was broken, and certainly there was no attempt to save Haymitch at the end. It made me wonder if it was all really just a test. What if Plutarch just wanted to see if it would be possible to break the arena, so that when they found that army and some better timing, they'd know they could do it for real

I headcanon that, in the end, Haymitch did manage to "break" the arena with that explosion but it was, unfortunately, a "if a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it" kind of thing (cameras were cut/Haymitch was unconscious)
