truly the end goal is not "my close friends aren't annoyed by me and it's all in my head, they're my friends and they love me", it's "sometimes I do annoy my close friends, just as the people I love most will also annoy me sometimes, because this is normal, and we will continue to stay friends, and they're not going to want to immediately cut me out of their life if I do something annoying once in a while"

the scene at the diner where benson goes off on marsha is clearly what he thinks of as an illustration of the perils of his ways sort of thing to randy, the kind of life he’ll end up living, one he views as menial and entirely devoid of purpose. but. oh my god it’s so painfully clear he’s just viewing her as a mirror for himself & lashing out based on the self-hatred he feels from working in the food service industry.

he wants to tell randy not to waste his life the way he did but he absolutely cannot allow himself the vulnerability of admitting that. he has to talk around it, he has to make these points and gestures and speeches to desperately try and distract randy, to try and distance himself from the fact he cares about randy and what part of him that care was born from.

he sees himself in randy. he sees weakness in randy. these two things he cannot let intersect. which is also why he is so cruel to him& why he cannot ignore randys patheticness.

guarddog benson  feels not quite right because when chris is tormenting randy, i think he feels randy is not something that is his but rather an extension of himself in that moment, and if that were the case  he would've ripped chris face off just there and then instead of walking outside, lighting a cigarette, thinking. to me he is one of those massive feral cats with the huge jowls and scraggly fur, lurking in alleyways surrounded by fag butts. he’s reactive and aggressive but he lurks, the whole time he works at burgers burgers burgers, even throughout the day where he commits a massacre, he still chooses to slink away, content to just hang back and observe as always, interfering only as he deems necessary and moved largely by his own curiosity. he’s quietly decimating the local wildlife populations. randys attempts to reach out usually end up with bensons claws in his skin but not always. he gets lots of dead things left on his doorstep.
