literally cannot get enough of the idea of motel rats randy and benson. fake names and hemming and hawing over how many beds, at first. paying cash and dodging questions about who they are and who they are to each other. investigating each new place for bugs and amenities and sturdy locks on the doors. balancing on the mattress to disable the smoke detector. rooms too hot, rooms too cold. stripping off layers or huddling together for warmth. watching trash TV. ignoring trash TV. gun on the nightstand, smokes on the nightstand. shaking the shit out of the vending machine at the end of the hall. clothes all over the floor. candy wrappers and cigarette butts. showers with shitty pressure and short-lived hot water so they double up, just to be efficient. benson grabs the gun and watches through the curtains when it gets rowdy in the parking lot. randy catches spiders under cups and takes them outside. they take care of each other, protect one another. find hope and happiness amidst a rotating backdrop of bleak and grimy dead-end towns just like home. grow and heal in unexpected ways. they start to think the same way. communicate with fewer words. smoke the same brand. only get one room key. never go anywhere alone. wouldn't be themselves without the other. inseparable, halves of a whole, couldn't be any other way.
kyle and johnny during their ig live talking about “oh here’s an interesting question, does randy miss benson?” “oh that’s tricky, that’s such a tricky question” well i think randy is 24 and graduating with his associates degree from a local community college and he sees someone wearing yellow out of the corner of his eye and for a second he thinks its benson here to congratulate him to touch his neck and say good job kid and then randy catches himself because benson’s been dead for three years now, but it’s the third time this week he could’ve sworn he saw him. and i think randy is 27 and he’s out on a first date with a guy getting brunch and his date orders the western omelette and randy says excuse me and goes to the bathroom and cries and cries and texts his date saying im sorry but im not feeling well i have to go home. and i think randy is 31 and looking through some old things he left at his mom’s house and he finds benson’s Jacket in a box and he pretends to be surprised like oh i forgot this was here but he knew it was there, he put it way in the back on purpose, out of sight out of mind, but he still thinks about it every day, still wants to put it on every day, is so sad it doesn’t smell like cigarettes anymore
the subtle yellowy-green tone they used for some scenes in The Passenger plus the overcast weather seen throughout the film reminds me of the green skies you can sometimes see before a tornado. And then when the tornado passes and you step outside and everything is so quiet again and all that remains is the devastation it left in its concentrated wake. Some buildings completely gone while others are left untouched. That’s how Benson exited Randy’s life. He tore things down to be rebuilt while leaving other parts intact.
(this tornado loves you by neko case is on my benson playlist how you could you tell? lol. i’m actually working on an edit with that song and clips from the movie shhh 🤫)
its funny to me that benson was clearly cleaning the lobby before his manger told him to and instead of saying anything he just does it again cause me too man if i don't have to do front counter and just reclean the lobby for as long as possible say less
