the thing about thomas retiring is that i started mourning him the day he made that "i did it with love" video at wc2022 and it's been almost 2 and a half years and i've really gotten to process and embrace my grief so weirdly i think i'll be ok? i mean i've literally been planning for months to skip my finals so that i can go to his last home bundesliga match. so in a way i feel extremely prepared and in another and much more real way i'm crying as i type this post

i hope thomas knows how special he is to so many people. the sheer difficulty i had getting a thomas müller number on my germany kit this summer because it was sold out in so many places. because so many people love him so much. so many people can trace their love of football back to him stepping onto the field as a gangly kid in south africa, not knowing what he would go on to achieve, or to him putting three goals past portugal on a crazy summer evening in 2014. there are a lot of very good footballers in this world, but there are fewer about whom you can definitively say: there will never be another one like him. and i really do believe that. he is one of a kind and i'm so lucky to have been alive to watch this sport while he played

In Germany we don’t say “I love you”. We say “Des intressiert mi ois ned, der Scheißdregg. Weltmeister simma, den Pott hamma. Den Scheißdreck ‘Goidna Schua’ konnst da hinda d’Ohrn schmiern.” which roughly translates to “You’re looking nice”. I think that’s beautiful.
