WOII Final: Summarize your experience of the
WOII module, bearing in mind the Learning
Outcomes:
Throughout this course, every week provided unique insights into philosophical and theoretical design approaches, building on my understanding of design as a multidimensional practice. Week 01, Phenomenology, brought to the forefront design as lived experience, with a focus on perception and interaction. Week 02,Aesthetics, showed how beauty, form, and emotion influence the viewer's response. Week 04, Semiotics, introduced the study of signs and symbols, illustrating how cultural context dictates meaning. Week 05 equipped me with practical tools for Analyzing a Work of Design, enabling me to criticize the effectiveness of a design in communicating or problem-solving.
Week 08 was useful for Formative Feedback that helped to develop my ideas through constructive criticism. Week 09 on Cultural Materialism helped me understand how design, culture, and socio-economic formations are interrelated. Weeks 10 and 11 on Poststructuralism and Postmodernism challenged traditional design thinking and encouraged critical thinking about established norms. Week 12 on Art Ecosystems pointed out how design operates within interconnected cultural, environmental, and economic systems.
Altogether, the course enhanced my critical thinking, analytical ability, and creativity. It shaped my conception of design not merely as a craft, but as a reflective and context-aware practice.

WOII Week 12: Art Ecosystem
In my opinion The design communication and experiences discipline significantly impacts how people interact with their world, and how information is conveyed, products and services experienced, and most importantly, how individuals and society understand and participate in the built environment, virtual environments, and culture at large. As an effect. As in Brand Identity and Recognition and Problem-Solving and Innovation.
Brand Identity and Recognition is Design communication that sets the manner in which a brand is perceived. Excellent design can trust, speak values, and create a unique identity that resonates with the audience. This is especially relevant in areas such as marketing, advertising, and digital media.
Second is Problem-Solving and Innovation. Designers involved in this area often solve complex problems, whether simplifying a process, improving the usability of a product, or improving the interaction of a service. This promotes innovation and ensures that solutions are beautiful and functional.
I think Problem-Solving and Innovation is the most important in design because to me there are always problems in designing not only that but also in design we always need innovation. As a designer and for my final project in year 3.
I will aim to enhance sustainable urban development by integrating eco-friendly materials and innovative technologies to reduce environmental impact while promoting healthier living spaces for communities. This is the main idea of the way I want to make an impact in design. I think it will be taught to do it but I always enjoy being caught in a difficult situation.

WOII Week 11: Postmodernism
In fact, I had no idea about Postmodernism before the class. Then what is Postmodernism? Postmodernism is a broad array of artistic and philosophical movements that claim a break with modernism. They have in common the view that it is no longer possible to rely on previous ways of representing the world. However, its more precise meaning remains contentious even among narrow contexts, and few keywords exist.
Playfulness and Irony. Postmodernism is playful, ironic, and humorous, typically by deconstructing old symbols and concepts. It contests the seriousness and authority of modernist design that was often elitist or overly functional. Relationship to Design: Postmodern design will often use lighthearted elements or forms of hyperbole in order to subvert expectation. Designers will create objects that appear to be purposefully "incorrect" or flashy, and are presented as a criticism of past design norms.
Within interior design, for example, this might be done through bringing together intricate furniture pieces and sterile environments to stimulate a sense of contradiction and comedy. And we did class work. I worked with Laura and re-did the poster using her wallet, we were going to make it simpler. We didn't get to finish but it was enjoyable and useful. I think that postmodernism is most important for my design ideas, as for me postmodernism in design represents a more loose, eclectic, and playful aesthetic, where the boundaries of traditional design are continually pushed.
As a designer, embracing postmodern ideas means subverting conventions, using irony, celebrating diversity, and often mixing old and new. It means creating designs that capture the richness and contradictions of contemporary life.

WOII week 5+6: How to analyze desgin + Field trip
To analyze a design effectively, it's essential to consider several key elements: functionality, aesthetics, and usability. Start by evaluating how well the design serves its intended purpose: does it solve the problem it's meant to address? Next, assess its visual appeal: how does the use of color, typography, and composition contribute to the overall message? Additionally, usability plays a critical role: is the design intuitive and user-friendly? Finally, context matters, understanding the cultural and social implications of the design helps to uncover deeper meanings and the impact it may have on its target audience. We did an activity where we brought our own things and analyzed them by categories such as Paradox, Memory, Ecology, etc. I brought Airpods, neckless and I analysed in ‘memory’ because these are all things my grandfather bought for me. After this activity I knew what is analyzing design. In week 6 we go to Haji Lane. Me and Yeonwoo take a lot of pictures such as wall paintings or symbols of cafes or restaurants. It was very interesting that we can find a lot of themes that are connected with week 5 so I took pictures that are related to the categories on week 5. I focused on Balance ,Humour and Memory same as week 5. This field trip helped me to analyze design more easier.

WOII week 2: Semiotics
Notable ideas about Semiotics
Semiotics, the theory of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation, is also a very rich theory of meaning-making and transmission. The key to it is that a "sign" consists of two parts: the signifier (the form of the sign, say, a word or image) and the signified (the meaning or concept it represents). This is a random and culturally determined relationship, and as such it is fluid and dynamic. Another crucial concept is intertextuality, where signs are not only significant in the immediate context but also in relation to other signs and symbols in an extended cultural system.
In design, semiotics has a great deal of involvement in creating visual language. Designers employ signs, symbols, and visual signals to convey meaning, influence emotion, or guide action. Like today's activity, me, Fybe, Yeonwoo and Nick was same group. We analyze some posters to see the meanings inside it.  The Brand logo, for instance, is a sign representing not only an organization but expresses its identity and values through color, shape, and type—each with specific cultural significance. The composition of these can quietly influence the interpretation and comprehension of the brand.
In addition, design frequently is based on codes—common sets of signs and meanings that a particular audience shares. A designer needs to be sensitive to such codes in order to communicate well with the desired user. Semiotics therefore offers designers a theory for producing intended, meaningful experiences that engage people, closing the gap between form and meaning that is culturally valid and contextually appropriate.

WOII week 1: Phenomenology
Notable Ideas About Phenomenology
Phenomenology, as a philosophical approach, emphasizes the study of conscious experience from the first-person perspective. One notable idea is the concept of "intentionality," which posits that consciousness is always directed toward an object. This means that our experiences are always about something, providing a direct link between our minds and the world around us. Today's activities, such as observing and interacting with our environment, highlight this connection by making us aware of how our perceptions shape our reality.
Another significant idea in phenomenology is the "lifeworld" (Lebenswelt), which refers to the pre-reflective, lived experience that forms the background of all our actions and thoughts. In the context of design, understanding the lifeworld of users can lead to more intuitive and user-centered designs. By considering how people naturally interact with objects and environments, designers can create products that better align with users' experiences and expectations.
Moreover, the phenomenological method of "epoché" or "bracketing" involves setting aside preconceived notions to focus purely on the experience itself. This method can be particularly useful in design research, allowing designers to gain fresh insights by examining user experiences without bias. By incorporating phenomenological principles, designers can create more meaningful and effective solutions that resonate with users on a deeper level.
Also we did an activity, we had to take pictures of ‘shadow’ and ‘time’.Phenomenologically, shadows represent a materialization of absence and presence, which shifts over time, forcing us to engage with the temporality of our own existence. The changing nature of both shadows and time serves as a reminder of the impermanence and fluidity of our experiences in the world.

Week 12: Compulsory Question 3
1. What kinds of collaborative projects would you like to do?
Indeed there are certain collaborative projects that I would like to pursue because I have always liked talking to and debating with people. Also that is the main reason I turn to design communication. And the projects I would love to do is, Sustainable Fashion Initiative. Which is join forces with the students of fashion design and environmental science to work on a project aimed at promoting the sustainable practices within the fashion industry. This may include investigation, seminars. I decided to choose this because I am interested in this fashion.
2. What kinds of Final projects would you like to do?
I still have a lot of thoughts and viewpoints about my final projects. Make a product that incorporates an interactive design element to simplify daily tasks, such an eco-friendly smart home appliance. Such as some things that we use commonly in our life. Could be stands, lights, kitchen finds.
3. Consider "Community Engagement and Professional Skills”
The chance to collaborate on design-related projects that help the integration of local immigrant or refugee communities would be very appreciated. Like "Cultural Exchange through Design" This initiative will guarantee community involvement and the development of professional skills by giving refugees and immigrants the chance to communicate their cultural narratives and experiences through various design-related media. Instruction in Design Skills: Workshops in graphic design, web design, or multimedia storytelling, if it is what the participants specifically require. Practical instruction using programs like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite may fall under this category.
4. How CTS A help you professionally?
To be honest I would like to say that CTS A helped me a lot in making me look back on my self not only that but also the mindfulness that I need to have in my design career. Because I was always not sure with my design but CTS A helped me to think more comfortably and sure about my design in the class and one day in my whole design career.

Critical Thinking
Week 11: Compulsory Question 2
Connect CTS A to all your other modules (and components).
Throughout my studies, I recognized the profound connection between critical thinking and the various modules I engaged with, particularly in Studio and craft workshop, digital skills. Critical thinking, as I learned, involves the ability to analyze information, question assumptions, and synthesize ideas, which I applied in my visual thinking exercises. In creating mark-making techniques, I utilized assertion and conflict resolution skills to navigate differing opinions on design choices not only that but also made me think about the path of my design style and career , thereby fostering collaborative skills within my group projects, such as projects for me, Jun Hoa and Gordon made the monument and the acting with different moment with Junling and Gordon. In Studio , I explored the interplay of typography and layout through the lens of critical thinking. By employing research frameworks to gather reliable sources which I did as a team project with Yeonwoo, , I was able to substantiate my design decisions with factual evidence. This process not only enhanced my understanding of the emotional impact of type but also reinforced the importance of filing and referencing sources effectively. I learned that a well-organized research approach is crucial for developing compelling narratives in data space. Additionally, the Craft Workshop component emphasized the significance of a growth mindset. I embraced challenges in mark-making and color theory, recognizing that mistakes were opportunities for learning and improvement. This mindset enabled me to experiment with abstraction, simplifying complex forms into cohesive designs. In the Photography component, I applied principles of composition and technical skills to convey narratives visually. The integration of digital skills, particularly in software like Photoshop and Premiere Pro, further exemplified the necessity of reliable sources and critical evaluation of materials in crafting compelling visual stories. Overall, my experiences across these modules underscored the interconnectedness of critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity, ultimately shaping my approach to both academic and practical projects.

Week 10: Compulsory Question 1
1.How do you understand the CTS module? Explain your choice of visual metaphor . Do you have an alternative visual metaphor?
Design concepts, materials, and user needs critically. It encourages us to question assumptions, assess the impact of their designs, and make informed decisions based on research and feedback. Also the CTS module helps to make a decision of  path in my life. Not only that but also a bridge is a potent visual metaphor that might be used to describe the CTS module. This metaphor clearly illustrates how teachers connect experiences, knowledge, and abilities to students. Similar to how a bridge spans barriers and allows ideas and resources to flow through, this module gives instructors the much-needed opportunity to collaborate on discussing techniques and overcoming obstacles as a group.
2. Which was your favorite activity or session? Why? Which aspects of it were memorable for you?
To be honest I loved every kind of session in CTS A, because I haven’t learned this kind of lesson in my life. I always learned about how to be better or how to develop my skills. I know these kinds of lessons are useful but CTS A. It touched me more especially week 2 activity which is making the monument by our hands. I like making something with my hands, not only that but also communicating with my friends.
3. What is the value of  working in a group?
There are a number of valuable benefits to group work and I think The first benefit I think is the better problem-solving ability. This is because, rather than thinking alone, many people can put their heads together and solve the problem in the best way by gathering different opinions from each other. Second is working in a group enhances collaboration, fosters diverse perspectives, and improves problem-solving skills, ultimately leading to more effective outcomes.
4. What do you wish you did more of, or better?
Actually because I missed class a lot I think if I had gone to class more there would be more chances to collaborate and communicate with my friends better and do my projects in class that I missed so I think next time I’ll try my best to not to skip class. Also I would put more effort on my group work

Week 3: Emotional Intelligence
We talked about “Self-management”, “ Self-awareness”, “Empathy” and “ Relationship management”. Which aspect do I think you are strongest at, and which is something I should try to improve? I will discuss with reference to today’s activities, and even my Studio collaborations. - First of all, I can't say that self-management is good, especially when it comes to time management. I always finish the work until the end, but I tend to be pushed and pushed. That's why I think it's the best way to make a schedule in order to improve my self-management further. Or I think it's a good way to plan things step by step from now on. But I think there is definitely something I am good at. The first is self-awareness. I think I am good at self-objectification in another sense. I think I am the type to know what I am good at and what I am not good at. So when I learn design, I learn what design I should learn more. And I also know what advantages it has. The second is relationship management and empathy. I think the reason why I explain these two together is that they are related. It's because I think relationship management is done by empathizing. I always think that relationships and cooperation are an advantage, so I can be sure that I am good at group assignments and team activities. Today, I played a scene in which Junling and Gordon had a conflict. As a result, I talked the most and listened to and wrote the script with great respect to the opinions of other group members. Not only do I always enjoy talking and talking with people, but I also seem to be good at resolving disputes between me and others. And based on this, I think I am good at managing relationships.

Week 2: Collaborative Skills
Describe your strengths and weaknesses as a collaborator. What are some areas to improve? Discuss with reference to today’s activities.
- First of all I think my strengths as a collaborator is active listening, which is like trying to understand others fully, asking clarifying questions, giving thoughtful responses. like the activities today with Jun Hoa and Gordon. I tried my best to listen and understand both opinions for our project. And problem solving, I like brainstorming solutions and working together. We didn’t have much time and also with no ideas but I gave ideas to teammates. On the other hand, my weakness is dependent on only the things I know. My responses are based on the memories I have been trained on, and if I do not have access to relevant information, my ability to contribute to a discussion may be limited. The areas to improve might be contextual understanding. I could strive to improve my ability to understand the main problem of a discussion, taking into account factors such as cultural differences, personal biases, and the overall goals of the collaboration.
If I had more time and an unlimited budget, How would you design the monument differently?
- The monument me, Jun Hoa and Gordon designed was a rocket or a nuclear bomb also adding heart-shaped origami to alert people to the growing threat of nuclear war in the 21st century, and to establish them in the capitals of different countries. Of course, the time was short, so it could not contain more meaning and details but if I had unlimited budget and more time then I would have drawn flags all over the word in the rocket monument. Not only that but also I would make them taller and bigger also because I have unlimited budget I would use clay to make more detailed monuments.

Critical Thinking
Week 1: What is Critical Thinking?
Describe your understanding of critical thinking that you had before the class, and reflect on what you may have learned.
- When I had any particular class, critical thinking was in my mind a process which helped examine information critically and logically. It entails determining whether information is credible and relevant, identifying preconceptions that may affect IT decision making, applying formal argumentation to draw sound conclusions in decision making, and using application of logic in problem solving. Critical thinking in our day to day activities improve our decision making and judgment besides increasing my realization that it relates with arts.
What have I learned about Mindfulness?
- According to my interpretation of mindfulness, I have come to understand that it is about awareness and not about control. However, mindfulness itself does not try to focus on erasing thoughts or feelings but rather focuses on the appreciation of their existence without judgment. Second, its positive effects apply to students as well as to teachers. It has also been found that mindfulness reduces stress, increases attention, helps control emotions, and increases the level of creativity. Third is that It is a talent that can be developed. It is necessary to practice regularly so as to enhance the capability of mindfulness. In the end, mindfulness is not restricted to the practice of meditation; it is applicable in every single activity undertaken.
How might I integrate this into my learning environment?
- There are some benefits of Mindfulness that can improve the process of designing, creativity, focus, and problem-solving. To implement it, carry out the enhanced training program to promote a mindful design culture, encourage the workers to provide feedbacks and perform post mortem analysis. Before brainstorming, it is recommended to perform the meditation and to draw the designer’s attention to the body activities, such as holding the materials and feeling their weight and texture.
